Apple is working on an iPad with a super-high 2,048-x-1,536 resolution display and some component makers are already beginning to invest in processes to product such screens — but they aren’t set to appear until iPad 3.0. D’oh!
This, at least, is what is being claimed by IDC analyst, Tom Mainelli, who told PC World: “Our sources say Apple has requested that manufacturers begin work on displays with that resolution for the iPad 3.”
“I don’t believe anybody is ready to produce that resolution in volumes at this point. And Apple is going to require huge volumes for the iPad 2,” he added.
Mainelli says he expects the iPad and iPad 2.0 will take “the lion’s share” of this years 44.6 million-strong tablet market. Digitimes last week claimed Apple will boost the iPad resolution, with the current debate seemingly speaking out against this being a retina display.
However, despite the lack of a Retina-display-like high-res screen, the new iPad 2.0 is expected to be thinner, lighter, faster and equipped with more memory and drive space. We may see the existing A4 processor coupled with a new far more powerful multi-core graphics chip. And we’re going to see a web conferencing camera for Facetime chats.
