Zune goes down the pan

Fri, 05/23/2008 - 04:07 — Andy Space

A leading US electronics retailer has decided to end sales of Microsoft’s Zune player due to insufficient demand.

US video game retailer GameStop has thus applied yet another slap across the face of Microsoft’s attempt to produce an ‘iPod-killer’. Zune has sold two million units since launch, proving itself an unwanted minnow in the sea of Apple competitors.

"'We have decided to exit the Zune category because it just did not have the appeal we had anticipated,' said a GameStop spokesperson," Priya Ganapati reports for TheStreet.com.

The retailer has hundreds of stores across the US. Apple has sold 85 million iPods in the same time period, outselling Microsoft by a factor of 42.5 to 1.

Two million sold in a year

Two million sold in a year and a half is actually pretty good. I don't think GameStop is the place to look for a music player of any brand.

To JeffDM

How's that good when Apple sells ~3.3 million per month?!

And believe you me, Apple could very well sell much more if it would somehow find itself better positioned in the international markets.

Which it will be after the iPhone 2.0 2008 launch.

But then who will want an iPod when one can have an iPhone?!

"A leading U.S. electronics

"A leading U.S. electronics retailer"? What!
It is a store where people go and buy VIDEO GAMES. "Electronics" retailer is really stretching it.

Really, now?

Okay - I am an avid Apple fan, and I hate the Zune as much as the next person on this site, but you're making a big deal over this GameStop thing? Come on now. GameStop is a major VIDEO GAME retailer, and game systems are the extent of their "electronics" scope. So naturally no one bought Zunes there. I doubt that iPod sales would be that "stellar" in GameStop either.

If Best Buy, Circuit City, Target or another major retailer had stopped sales of the product, THAT would be a slap in the face.

And also if you think about it, the iPod has been around for a very long time now and has become an industry standard. Microsoft actually accomplished quite a feat by selling 2 million iPods in that span of time, especially with the stiff competition. You obviously can't wrap your head around that because your biased attitude is blinding you.

 Microsoft sold 2 million

Microsoft sold 2 million iPODs? Is that what you said?

Biased, moi?

GameStop Significance

GameStop does indeed have more significance than you are supposing. Prolly not as much significance for iPod - - - but for Zune, yes. See here: http://www.fool.com/investing/value/2008/05/23/kill-the-zune-microsoft.aspx

The iPod will never be dead unless iPod stops being the generic layman term for all digital music players.
