Youtube in 1080P or how to redline your processor with Flash

As promised last week, Youtube has begun rolling out its 1080P content, according to their blog post on the matter. The first video? Pennie the Jack Russell recorded on a Toshiba Camileo S10 HD. We've embedded it for you below but you'll need to go full screen if you want to experience full CPU blowout.
On the most recent 13-inch MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM, we've got Flash redlining the CPU, a few beach balls and we're missing some frames. Also it looks like you may be able to trick Youtube into displaying your content in full HD by putting a trailing "&fmt=37" into the URL. Pulling the original source MP4 from Youtube will probably yield better results.
There appear to be some non-believers out there. Below are some screenshots of the Flash video in 720P. 1080P is twice as bad.
played using safari on 2.5 mbp w/ 4gb ram full screen pre unibody 512 onboard graphics.... no problem and cpu was only at or around 75% capacity.... worked fine.
Flash will alwys be a jokeas long as this comaprison can be made:
On a MacPro1,1 Dual Core Dual Proc setup with 6GB of Ram running 10.6.2
1080p in Flash: 95-110%
1080p in Quicktime: 2-4%
I may have gotten the raw file wrong I loaded up the auto-1080p link in the page first (&fmt=37) to be sure, but please correct me if I'm wrong. The non-1080p-ish flash link ran about 65-80% CPU either way.
Quicktime always runs my flash files with far less resource use, I just wish Adobe could try to get there with their flash plugin. Flash was great for crashing client computers as far back as 2000 when simple banner ads set to 125 fps could halt visitor's systems. I would love to have flash on the iPhone but when it consumes so much resources I can't imagine having to reboot my iphone every time I visited youtube by accident.
I am running a new MacBook Pro 15-inch with 2.66ghz processor and 4g of ram. My processor CPU usage stayed around 55% while the video was playing. That's just a little less than what Call of Duty 4 uses...Wow.
I get much better performance if I let the entire video load before starting to play. It uses just as many resources but it plays fine on a unibody Macbook
Well I just tried this on my 3 year old Windows XP HP 1.6 core duo laptop and it rang just fine. I will be upset if my santa-rosa 2 year old Macbook can not handle it. I don't want to be beat by a PC...

Man, who on earth thought
Man, who on earth thought 1080p Flash was a good idea? It's a horrendous resource-hog as it is!

not that bad.
h264 was not a option? I
h264 was not a option?
I thought all new you tube content was going to be encoded in h264?
Am I missing something?
Only for iPhone
IIRC, the H.264 encoding of YouTube content was only for the version of YouTube accessible to the iPhone & iPod Touch.
Indeed, but install
Indeed, but install click2flash as Safari plugin and you can play youtube as H264
Tested and indeed loading in Quicktime is far better.

It's also used for the AppleTV version.

Your machines crap!
I ran it fine on a Macbook alu unibody, 4Gb ram. Other readers ran it well too.
So it must be your machine that is lacking. :)
And the point is?
Flash is so beyond worthless that its hurts just reading something like this.

Let the video load fully - applies to all youtube HD videos. Also, switch to fullscreen mode.
Or get your macbook fixed.
