X-Plane for iPhone. Wow....just wow

Tue, 09/16/2008 - 04:21 — Seth Weintraub

As a pilot that has been out of the loop for a few years, I have to say this one caught me by surprise.   I had no idea they'd be able to cram a full fledged flight sim onto the iPhone.  Bye bye $10 (iTunes link).

From Laminar Research:

X-Plane-iPhone is now here for iPhone and iPodTouch!
Go to iTunes, hit the HOME button, APP STORE, then then go to category GAMES, sub-category SIMULATIONS!
This is fun little mini-version of X-Plane that lets you fly 4 planes around the X-Plane demo area! The flight physics of the iPhone are actually about 95% as good as the physics in X-Plane, and the scenery is even pretty decent! You TILT the phone to fly! It is so cool that it is ridiculous.
X-Plane for iPhone is only $9.99, so grab it today ... it is fun! Be sure to write a review if you like it!

(note: To fly it, simply click the brakes off, drag the throttle up on the left, and tilit the phone back to raise the nose when you have flying speed! Click around the center of the screen to invoke the view and settings controls.)

Wow, that's incredible!

Wow, that's incredible!

I'd love to be able to see

I'd love to be able to see the runway again, once up. Maybe if there was a preflight map view.

I'm unsure about the physics once you get into situations you might expect to stall a cessna or such. I got the plane out of control, but was surprised how long it stayed up, and the acrobatics it went through, when trying to force a crash.

Again though, I would love merely to turn around, see the runway I left, and attempt a landing. I have some awareness of the physics of flight sims from the desktop version, some idea what NOT to do,I was just exploring the iphone apps interface as quickly as possible.

Gimme a dogfight opponent and

Gimme a dogfight opponent and I'll buy it!

Wrong link

The link doesn't go to the game, it goes to info about game ratings. Please fix!

Finding the runway

Hi:

I love X Plane!

To find the runway look at the long arrow shaped needle in the middle of the compass rose at the bottom of the display. The head of the needle always points to the airport. Turn the aircraft so that the needle is at the top and you're headed to the airport.

The trick is lining yourself up on a straight in and not at 90 degrees to the runway as you approach the airport. Instrument rated pilots use this same instrument to perform approaches to airports while flying in clouds. Google ADF approaches or NDB approaches, there are some tutorials online.

I can't wait for the about to be released update.

Magnificent!!

"a pilot that has been out of the loop for a few years" just about perfectly describes me too, and this incredible app crumbles my last defences against getting an iPhone.

I won't try to second-guess guys who have actually been speed-programming within the fabled Cupertino walls, or who have been developing the full version for years, but my mind instantly conjures up all sorts of possible scenarios, add-ons, and extras:

- an aerobatics package, complete with "show me" demos
- the use of the GPS location and cell triangulation functionality of the iPhone for "rendezvous", "formation flying" and yes, "dogfighting"
- SIDs and approaches, Profile descaents
Yayyyyy!!! The mind boggles... go X-plane, go!!!

I just detest spelling errors!
