WWDC: Crazy Mac development news - Mac Fusion

Developers, developers, developers - and they're all in San Francisco today for the opening of the WWDC, with that in mind news of the Mac Fusion gizmo is setting tongues wagging - though whether it's true, false of a happily optimistic Photoshop pipedream isn't completely clear (Our BS detecter needle broke off when we saw this).

See here, Mac Fusion looks so much like an Apple TV it may actually be one, and the use of a Windows logo within Apple's site seems a little, erm, unusual.

So what am I going on about? Mac Fusion - allegedly a product for budget-strapped developers searching for the hardware they need to port applications to the Mac. Though that' what we thought the Mac mini (if it lasts) could be used for. If claims are true (and this close to WWDC it kind of doesn't matter any more), Mac Fusion will be equipped with a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor, will offer an 800MHz FSB and 3MB L2 cache. And yeah, the U.S.P. is its Boot Camp support, meaning users will be able to run Windows and Linux on the device, while maintaining the stability they expect from Mac OS X.

i've been itching for a Mac Mini for a while now to throw into my home theater setup so I can dump my AppleTV.  Just never quite satisfied with the AppleTV - even hacked, it's feature poor and a poor performer on high quality MKV rips (frame drop city).  The only thing keeping me from making the leap is the persistent rumors of a new model out any time soon.

If this thing is indeed just a re-skinned AppleTV it will be a big mistake.  Too little horsepower for a developer, I think.

wow, not even trying

Does anyone expect us to believe that Apple would build a special model of Mac for Windows developers? Any current model is just as suitable.

Not only that, but why is there a Linux logo on that page? Apple doesn't care about Linux developers and are not trying to court them. Not only that, but why is there an obvious white background around the OS logos. Apple's web designers would not make that mistake.

The copy underneath the product shot sounds amateurish too. I hope an actual designer or copy writer didn't come up with this hoax.

@ DistortedLoop: You might want to hang on to that AppleTV. iTunes on the Mac does not download HDTV from the iTunes store and does not sync to iPod Touch. Only SD. I haven't not bought Apple TV yet because I want something that can also replace my TiVo and allows me to sync to an iPod Touch.

Thanks.  Not a concern if the iTunes store is not your planned source of HD content.  At $4.99 per, and 24 hours only, iTunes is a long way from becoming my HD content provider (other than podcasts).
