WWDC 2008 Keynote: Again no surprises...

Although Steve Jobs didn't reveal any surprises, our expectations were pretty high...and Apple met them.  The devil is in the details and the location-based stuff is going to be really cool when developers (and Advertisers) start utilizing them.

Bravo Apple.

Now we want to know more about Snow Leopard...

the GPS is listed as

the GPS is listed as "assisted GPS" is this the real deal or just some half ass GPS? will garmin or other compaines be able to mimic the real time 3D GPS on the iphone that they use in thier current hardware

Assisted GPS is normal GPS

97

Assisted GPS is normal GPS that uses cell tower positioning to enhance performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS

So disappointing

119

All of the build-up, yet just as much disappointment at the same time. 3G and GPS are great additions, but they were expected and assumed. How could Apple ignore, AD2P support, a larger mega-pixel camera, front camera for iChat applications, MMS, copy-paste, etc. Apple had a full year to correct and add these features, yet nothing was done. I don't care what Apple site you visit, you hear the same complaints and suggestions for MMS (I email most of my pictures, however, not all of my friends have picture enriched e-mail on their mobile phones), copy-paste and stereo blue tooth. These are features that have existed in other mobile phones for a couple of years. Sometimes Apple "out-thinks" itself. No wonder their stock is crashing right now..........Back to the drawing board Apple!

I heartily agree...

I heartily agree...

 Does the fact that Steve

911

Does the fact that Steve didn't mention copy/paste in the keynote necessarily mean it's missing/not coming?

Maybe it's just not keynote-worthy...?  (hoping)

This fanboy disappointment

SAN FRANCISCO—June 9, 2008—Apple® today previewed Mac OS® X Snow Leopard, which builds on the incredible success of OS X Leopard and is the next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system. Rather than focusing primarily on new features, Snow Leopard will enhance the performance of OS X, set a new standard for quality and lay the foundation for future OS X innovation. Snow Leopard is optimized for multi-core processors, taps into the vast computing power of graphic processing units (GPUs), enables breakthrough amounts of RAM and features a new, modern media platform with QuickTime® X. Snow Leopard includes out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 and is scheduled to ship in about a year.

“We have delivered more than a thousand new features to OS X in just seven years and Snow Leopard lays the foundation for thousands more,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “In our continued effort to deliver the best user experience, we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system.”

Snow Leopard delivers unrivaled support for multi-core processors with a new technology code-named “Grand Central,” making it easy for developers to create programs that take full advantage of the power of multi-core Macs. Snow Leopard further extends support for modern hardware with Open Computing Language (OpenCL), which lets any application tap into the vast gigaflops of GPU computing power previously available only to graphics applications. OpenCL is based on the C programming language and has been proposed as an open standard. Furthering OS X’s lead in 64-bit technology, Snow Leopard raises the software limit on system memory up to a theoretical 16TB of RAM.

Using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone™, Snow Leopard introduces QuickTime X, which optimizes support for modern audio and video formats resulting in extremely efficient media playback. Snow Leopard also includes Safari® with the fastest implementation of JavaScript ever, increasing performance by 53 percent, making Web 2.0 applications feel more responsive.*

For the first time, OS X includes native support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 in OS X applications Mail, iCal® and Address Book, making it even easier to integrate Macs into organizations of any size.

Why with all the new products

811

Why with all the new products moving over to the brushed metal look is the alt iphone white? It doesn't sit right with me it should have been brushed black and brushed silver

Voice recognition

98

Apple...did not give what EVERYONE wants....and needs....VOICE RECOGNITION. Especially when it comes to July 1st here in California when we cannot drive with a cell phone stuck to our ear.

STEVE....VOICE RECOGNITION....PLEASSSSSSE.

I think

711

I think leaving the front mounted camera out and larger camera are ok since they will allow Apple to update the phone again in 6 months to a year and they did drop the price by $200!

But MMS and other software add-ons should have happened. some like MMS can happen via a third party so I expect to see this kind of app shortly but copy/paste is a system wide function and only Apple can add that!

Voice recognition might be able to be added by a third party but it won't be as seemless as if Apple did it. most voice activated dialing I know of works by pressing a button on the side of a phone to place it in "listen" mode then you speak so I don't see how this can happen on the iPhone as is without the user waking the phone and then launching some 3rd party app. the best method would be to update the double click on the home button to activate voice dialing as an option like displaying the iTunes controls are right now.

Maybe some of the features

96

Maybe some of the features will sold via app-store.
So that you can customise your phone. You need voice recognition - then buy it....
Lets see....

Why do you need MMS if you

116

Why do you need MMS if you can have email?

Clueless

106

Because every other frickin' phone in the world does MMS, and most of our non-geek friends are just too lame to figure out they can send the stupid pictures they want to send us to an email address instead of our phone number.  How hard is that concept for all the "just use email" advocates?

I will gladly "just use email" to send my pictures to friends, and I will gladly ask them to try to remember to send that quick pic to my email address instead of my phone number, but jeez, if one of them screws up and sends it to my phone number instead, for god's sake Apple/AT&T give me a frickin' way to retrieve it without jumping through stupid hoops.  As it stands now, I get an SMS message saying you have a picture waiting at a web address.  The SMS gives a random user id and password, which I can't copy/paste (thanks Apple) and which aren't easy to remember, and when you finally get to the page and log in, it's frickin' Flash website, so you can't save the picture, or forward it, or anything.  And then it expires after a month and is gone forever.  Just brilliant from a company who prides itself on "it just works."

I could live with being referred to a webpage IF it was the same page all the time, and I could set the password (why not use my phone number as the user id), and the pictures are actually pictures that I can download, forward, print, whatever.  How hard would that be, Apple/AT&T.

Ugh. This is awesome. Can we

98

Ugh. This is awesome. Can we just enjoy the moment for 5 minutes before bitching and whining about "missing features"?

Do you REALLY need video calls? Do you REALLY need a high megapixel camera IN YOUR PHONE? Come on...and if you answered yes to those questions you need to uppercut yourself.

front facing camera

107

the only reason i would have liked the front camera would be for Photobooth. That would have been so much fun with friends and such. Oh well. Im still gettin it.

There is still so much

107

There is still so much missing from the iphone (as much as I do love it).... My main issue is no MMS!!

iPhone DOES have MMS!! C'mon

610

iPhone DOES have MMS!! C'mon folks! ALl carriers have an "email" address tied their mobile number that will send a picture from your iPhone email as a text to a non iphone users phone!

Example.. send a pic to a non iphone user with Tmobile - xxxxxxxxxx@tmail.com

the x's being their 10-digit mobile number! Just add those as their email address in your contacts... whine whine whine

 whine whine whine.   Read my

106

 whine whine whine.

Read my message above.  It's not sending MMS that's the major complaint, it's RECEIVING them without jumping through hoops.  I won't repeat the story here, just scroll back up to my "clueless" comment.

That said, I'll also point out that while yes, every phone has an email address attached to it, some have multiple addresses specific to whether you're sending SMS or MMS (8185551212@vzwpix.com vs 8185551212@vtext.com).  So, now I have to have multiple address book entries for the same purpose.  Also, I don't know about you, but I have dozens of people I would like to be able to send a quick pic to.  Do I have to ask all of them what their cell provider is?  What a hassle?  Everyone else just needs to know a phone number, iPhone users have to know a phone number, an email, and a cell provider.  Lame.

UGH

1010

I'm so mad I can't see straight! HAVING TO ACTIVATE THE IPHONE FROM THE APPLE OR AT&T STORE???? OMG! No getting around this one yet to be able to unlock it!

One word...."ANDROID"

87

Dude, one word "ANDROID" other 3G's, GPS's phones already available and marketed apple will plays catch-up with the rest in 2 to 5 years until then they will suck all of you dry (dollar) fanboi's get real or get a life.

App store... Where is APPLE??????

106

I just followed live blogging yesterday. Nice and cool, intersting new stuff about the iPhone 3G (evolution, no revolution).

Besides deception of no "one more thing" related to Macs (which I predict will have a separate event in September, as soon as Intel is ready, to unveil the new designs and features)....

One thing I really miss is Apple's own applications in the iPhone. It's all good and right to have developers for the platform... But why on earth should I use TypePad for my small blog if I use iWeb on my Mac? Where is iWeb for iPhone, iPhoto for iPhone (albums, small corrections, presentations), Aperture for iPhone, iChat for iPhone (ok, maybe that one's there)...

I really wonder why Apple didn't concentrate more on delievering their own software to the iPhone.
And... The iPhone is interesting but not as revolutionary as I thought (camera still sucks (front camera I couldn't care less), A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth)...

Other things I miss?
- Nike+ for iPhone. I am not interested in a complete medical check up (app that was announced), but much more in an App that keeps track of my sport performances, weight etc.
- no announcement about new movie or music deals...

Maybe some of these will come soon (after all the WWDC is for developers, i.e. the people who will bring us this stuff). But I feel disappointed from a content perspective.

I don't suppose Apple could make it so that developers are required to give users the option to allow the messenger in the background (or not) if they choose to do so?I mean, why think up of something so simple as that when you can show people a picture of a windows mobile phone? This is exactly why I dislike Apple products.... the user never has any options beyond what Apple has decided you should or should not do.
