Wired is Close

Wired's artists seem to have a very good idea (of the profile at least) of the new MacBook.  The frontal is a little bit weird and we aren't sure why it is so light - but the side view is very close to what we've been told.

Remember, for this thing not to fall over - a lot of weight needs to be put on the bottom - meaning battery and SSD.  However, Apple might have put the mothrboard behind the screen to save some space.  Also, if it folds all the way around 360 degrees it could make one helluva tablet.

Just saying is all.

Think about this: why fold

35

Think about this:

why fold it all the way around (360-degrees)?

what if it folded 180-degress?

from the looks of it, it could lay flat.

would there be any benefit to that?

dunno... what if the keyboard is virtual and a multi-touch device itself and the screen is not touch (kinda like the nintendo-ds)?

I've been thinking this is gonna be like the ds for some reason.

SO FREAKING EXCITED

As soon as I saw that image

35

As soon as I saw that image and how there seems to be a nice rotation
point, I thought "Gee, wouldn't it be cool if it went all the way around
and worked like a tablet!" I think you hit the nail right on the top...head...
whatever.

Actually... if you think about it... those intel chips get hot enough you probably could cook a pie on it.

How on Earth did you not think of "Apple Pie"?

'cause Mac-n-Pie is kinda like Mac-n-Cheese

lol....man we are totally setting ourselves up for major dissapointment......

You know, it would truly be

27

You know, it would truly be awesome if this became a tablet...I am not counting on it. Besides, it would probably just be multitouch and I WANT A PEN TO DRAW DAMMIT!

But...if it folded 360 degrees...wouldn't that leave the keyboard exposed? Then, in turn, wouldn't you be resting it ON the keyboard?

Pens can touch too. You can

Pens can touch too. You can have multitouch + stylus, where it understands what the stylus is.

OK, sorry about that, it

71

OK, sorry about that, it kept telling me I wasn't getting the CAPTCHA right...so I kept trying!

whatever happened to the

42

whatever happened to the apple patent a while back of the bottom loading optical drive in order to save space? i've seen lots of (wild) speculation as to what apple could (probably not) implement in a lightweight notebook design, but somehow this part (which got decent coverage when the patent app surfaced) somehow isn't in the picture?

I just hope that they have

42

I just hope that they have not lost  focus of the education community..(remember how education is part of their DNA blah blah blah..)

I hope that the price point of these things lets schools buy them..

It won't swing back all the

34

It won't swing back all the way. It would make no sense. If it did, you would have to pick the the whole thing up off the table and hold it awkwardly to get in into tablet mode. If the screen just spun around like all the other convertible tabs, it would be easier to use. omg, BUT that would create an additional seam in the hinge!!!!11!!! AHHHHH!! WE'RE APPLE AND WE DON'T BELIEVE IN ADDITIONAL SEAMS!!!!!! ; )

This model wouldn't be able

53

This model wouldn't be able to fold 360 degrees, just look at the bump that would be in the way..

It'll be interestinf to see de connectivity on this thing. Offcouse USB, Wifi and Bluetooth, but what else? Flash-card slot? (to kinda replace optical) WiMax? GSM? (would be great, internal GSM modem, 3G..).

All looked pretty good right

43

All looked pretty good right up to what would have to be the most disappointing "One more thing" of all time!

the computer looks awesome,

44

the computer looks awesome, the design looks awesome, and the concept sounds awesome, but for $1500, I don't really see why i would want to buy one of these over say a souped up macbook. I'm sure there will be suprises in store for this new laptop at macworld but presently, I don't see anything that can justify a $1500 price tag.

I don't think it will be

43

I don't think it will be $1500. I think, rather, it will be priced between the iPhone and the Macbook base model. I would be happy to see it about $800.

Have you checked the price

43

Have you checked the price of other small form factor portables. Sure this one might be wider and higher than those, yet if it is as thin as reported, then I think this would be enough to justify the $1500.

They will not leave it as an entry level notebook, it will be the deluxe version of the macbook.

Will it actually have USB?

41

Will it actually have USB? If it really doesn't have any wired connections that would suck, I don't think I'd want a Laptop without USB. In fact I'd be perfectly happy if all they did is make the current MacBooks aluminum.

No cables REQUIRED doesn't

35

No cables REQUIRED doesn't necessarily mean no USB ports. That mockup profile pic has 2 ports in the base, near the hinge. It is just that you wouldn't NEED cables (assuming they have an induction charger for the battery, as per their patent). By having no ports on the back they could make room for near 360 degree hinge.

However I'm not sure it could charge in tablet mode? Normally you need to be really close for induction to work effectively, and I'd expect the antena to be on the bottom of base, to provide lots area of close proximity for the induction. Unless they somehow managed to get the induction antena into the hinge? Then it'd look more like a docking station.

wouldnt it be cool if the

43

wouldnt it be cool if the apple air (that sexxxy nas box) were to be included with everyone of the ultra portables... a simple 2 grand for the whole kit and kaboodle... and also it has to have usb... think of what a computer is used for... if i can do my homework on it i need to be able to save it to a flash drive... how would i connect my ipod to it? wifi handles my iphone syncing if they want to but what about all the other mp3 players on the market... if you think jobs get a bad wrap for allegedly monopolizing ipods with itunes or whatever that sillyness is dont you think a computer with no way of connecting to 3rd party devices is just a tad worse... and riaa get off apples ass when it comes to itunes... most people with 160gb ipods that hold 40000 songs arent spending $40 grand to fill it... music should be free

What i would like it look

34

What i would like it look like.

they are not going to

33

they are not going to release this thing

Another excellent call from

64

Another excellent call from 9to5 as regards the screen folding 360 degrees. IN this case, the keyboard would de-activate so only the screen allowed use input.

If you remember a few months ago there was a patent which covered dual operation - touch on the front and keys on the back, originally drawn showing an iPod-like form factor. This would work equally well for a tablet.

I don't think there'd be any issues with an exposed keyboard since in tablet mode you'd be holding the thing or laying it flat on a desk.

Of course, I don't see Apple actually releasing this, but we'll find out soon enough!

The keyboard would need to

53

The keyboard would need to be recessed relative to the outside edge of case, or something very differet about the keys (such as physically locked in up position when screen is around). Otherwise it'd feel unstable, sort of smooshy, when set on a flat surface like a table. Also, even with a recessed case, if you were holding it I'd imagine the keys on the bottom side feeling wierd. The asthetics of it all strike me as jolting and rough. *shrug*

HEY, WHAT IF THE APPLETV WAS

63

HEY, WHAT IF THE APPLETV WAS GIVEN A SUPERDRIVE? THEN THE NEW 'BOOKS WOULDN'T NEED AN OPTICAL DRIVE... AS LONG AS THE TWO COULD TALK OVER HIGH SPEED WIRELESS...

US & UK stores are down!

32

US & UK stores are down!

Well, the store is down, so

62

Well, the store is down, so I'm expecting an AppleTV that can stream HD content wirelessly to a revamped Apple Cinema Display and no wires required

;)

Personally, I think it has nothing to do with a new thinner laptop but a new wireless product. The reference to 'air' does not conjour up images of a Mac of any type imo. Might as well have said "Illuminating" means a MacBook Lite !
