Microsoft's new plan - black Windows
What? Well, plan is that the company is doing some more of its famed Office Paperclip magic, changing Windows Genuine Advantage (which no one likes because the only genuine advantage it offers is to MSFT)...anyway, so the new look to combating piracy of the OS the company spent years pushing at people in order to make it pervasive means those using pirated copies of Windows (why pirate it, when you can simply not use it?) can expect their desktop wallpaper to be replaced with a black screen every 60 minutes. Also, to remind you that executives at the world's biggest and richest software company need a few extra treats for the table come the next shareholder's meeting, "copies of Windows deemed to not be genuine will also have a translucent watermark above the system tray, which Microsoft calls a 'persistent desktop notification.' Don't you just love double-speak? "Persistent Desktop Notification sounds so much more grown-up than the old traditional expression, "pester message". Oh and the scheme will be focused on the product edition that is most often stolen, Microsoft says, which - c'mon everyone, you know which one it is - is Windows XP (the version people actually prefer using because it almost works a bit). By the way, can you even get a legitimage copy of XP anymore? Now, while home users and persistent pirates will probably be able to handle this low-level irritation, we over here at 9to5Mac can't help but feel this to be just Microsoft's gentle way to tell business users with pirated software that it just might be a good idea to pay for XP (which they can't) or upgrade to Vista (which they don't want to). Wonder how many Mac sales Microsoft's all-new approach to protecting its (now defunct) OS investment will generate? And what about those of us who don't want Vista and can't buy XP? Just a thought, anyway... Via: CustomPC ( Filed Under: )

Actually this is good for
Actually this is good for everyone : they keep on annoying people every year with a new trick -> People will keep switching for linux/os X.
Andy, if Apple would do this,
Andy, if Apple would do this, you'd be cheering. Your latest newsposts are more about bashing anything non-Apple than actual Apple news.

1. One thing I like is the lack of DRM on Mac OS X - trust the customer, extend the reach.
2. One thing I wouldn't be doing is cheering if they did - technically that's a slanderous slur on my character.
3. As per the Apple, non-Apple thing, I think if you actually thought about it, rather than trolling, you'd realise that on a percentile basis, your argument has no substance
4. I dislike the over-use of the familiar, in this case my name as preface to your message - seems wrong to me, as you neglected to use your own at the end, which is both bad manners and an attempt to troll while hiding behind a cloak of anonymity.
Thank you
I agree . If apple were to do
I agree . If apple were to do this we would have all cheered and said what a wonderful idea. The piracy in Apple world has also begun and soon Apple would be forced to authenticate every copy of their software.
Microsoft a software company is just trying to protect its interest - make money ! Its just like everybody installing a firewall for their system, nobody wants anybody to steal their stuffs ! :-)

Seriously?
I feel disgusting even posting on this site due to its egregious, nondiscriminatory fawning over anything Apple and senseless Microsoft bashing, but here it goes...
1) Lack of DRM? OS X is the epitome of DRM. IT DOESN'T RUN ON NON-APPLE-PROPRIETARY HARDWARE.
2) Nothing to say.
3) Please explain what possible relevance a post about Microsoft's anti-piracy mechanisms has on an Apple news site. Isn't the site titled 9to5mac not 9to5operatingsystems?
4) 9:42's post is anything but trolling, its constructive criticism. You, as the sites editor, are bound by a code of journalistic ethics to publish your identity because you are providing a news service and accepting ad revenue. Readers have no such obligation because they are simply bystanders, largely inconsequential to the sites modus operandi and content. I highly suggest you get over yourself and start listening to your critics.

(1) isn't really true. The "DRM" that locks Mac OS X to Apple hardware is a) pathetically easy to break in software and b) also possible to break in _hardware—_it's possible to build a machine that, for all intents and purposes, is an Apple machine and the system won't even notice and have to be bypassed. Basically Apple is relying on brand loyalty and the ability to sue companies who make Mac clones, and they just (reasonably) don't care if Chris Cheap Mac User builds his own.
Isn't it a bit of a stretch
Isn't it a bit of a stretch to call someone making an anonymous post a "critic"? You're just one guy with a contrary opinion- don't flatter yourself by branding yourself as a critic.
And your just an anti-mac opinion at a mac website. You're just looking for some action on a slow Friday before the holiday weekend. Play solitaire.

1. "Lack of DRM? OS X is the epitome of DRM. IT DOESN'T RUN ON NON-APPLE-PROPRIETARY HARDWARE."
Epitome of DRM is when your product doesn't run as it should on ANY hardware if you don't pay up.
The article is right to point out that the product in question isn't even available for sale any more, which make it extortion.
2. Which means you agree.
3. It is very relevant. Many people who are faced with this issue might want to consider switching. And current Mac owners can help them a better choice.
4. I am not an expert on internet protocol.

Though sometimes it may feel
Though sometimes it may feel like beating a dead horse, usually I think it's entertaining to continue to compare Microsoft and Apple in many ways, especially business practices. An article like this makes me laugh that people are still putting up with the duplicitous, ludicrous actions from a mostly stagnant company like Microsoft. It's like watching another Get A Mac ad. Granted, Microsoft have been doing a little bit better in the last year or two (at least trying in a small but silly way) but that's only because they feel their position of dominance is threatened. It's like the tortoise and the hare. Microsoft had a leg up but decided to fall asleep as they thought they had the whole thing in the bag. Now we're just witnessing their constant state of panic as they scramble at getting back in the now out-of-reach game.
On the other hand Apple made some bad decisions in the past that about killed the company. It's possible they could do it again if they don't keep their selves in check this time. They're not perfect, which is why any real fan of what Apple stands for shouldn't hesitate to openly support another company if they happen to come out with something that trumps Apple, too.
For now, it's not looking like that will happen anytime soon. So in the meantime, we laugh at others' attempts when fall way, way, way short.
short and sweet: well i liked

well i liked the post, made me laugh
((Microsoft)) Poor little
((Microsoft))
Poor little corporation.
:-(
This is silly.
Andy can post anything he'd like to post. If you don't want to read it, don't. If he loses readership, that's his problem. Sure, you have the right to say he's wrong, but I can say you're wrong, too, eh?
As far as whether it's Apple news or not, I came here for Apple news and am satisfied. Anything that Microsoft does has an affect on Apple (sales, public perception, etc.) in some way, large or small, because they are major competitors in the PC market.
Moreover, it's entertaning, so I'm happy. If 9to5mac didn't report on this, I wouldn't read about it, b/c I'm not going out researching Microsoft stuff (yuck). I'm glad people like Andy are.
Just thought I'd point this out
The "critics" (or whatever you'd like to call them) are correct. This post by Andy is senseless.
Oh, and I'm not a troll, and I'm not a Mac-hater. I own an iPod Touch, and I'm getting ready to buy my first Macbook in a couple weeks. I came to this site seeking useful information. Instead, I see several posts (this one and the Dell one) that are filled with biased Apple nonsense. Whatever makes you feel better about your choice in computer products, I guess.
And please, don't give me this stuff about "trust the customer, extend the reach". I seriously doubt if Apple had the same piracy problems that Microsoft had they'd just sit tight.
well your at an apple rumor
well your at an apple rumor site what did you expect for non bias reviews check cnet.
Wow, thanks for the tip.
Wow, thanks for the tip. Guess I'll stick to macrumors.com. Believe it or not, they can write about what Apple and Microsoft do without the same propaganda.
I guess it's just a matter of
I guess it's just a matter of time before my VMware XP install cacks!!! : O
Who the hell decides what
Who the hell decides what 'proper' journalistic practices are anyway? And what is this 'protocol'? Myths, all of them. POSTMODERNITY FTW!!!
The question of the customer choice is a good one
IMHO, this post isn't bashing microsoft.
It just put the point on the ability for "standard" PCs customers to choose the windows OS they'd like to use between XP, improved and recently adopted in the business world and the new "Fun" but heavy Vista.
I tried them both, and worked in the "Redmond" world for the last 4 years in a bank company, and we were still using W2000. The switch to XP began only one year ago.
Hence, the need to be able to run (and buy the adequate license) for another Microsoft OS than the last funny one is a real need, both for personal and business use (when you come back home with some work, there is a need to have a similar environment, especially as a software architect and developer).
Thanks Andy for your thought, I share the same opinion.

Big, bad, richest software
Big, bad, richest software company pitted against the big, good, richest whatever the heck Apple calls themselves these days? How naive can Apple fanbois be?
Both are huge corporations. Both dominate in their chosen activities. Both produce good products and crappy ones too.
Nobody pulled the wool over someones eyes and forced consumers to buy XP or Vista, they chose it, and did it in numbers that caused market dominance.
I've had lots of great experiences with Apple products, but plenty of shitty ones too. Same with Microsoft. I love my macs, but there are plenty of things they can't do that my windows machines can.
Why the hell is this always painted as good vs. evil?
Alternative: Ubuntu!
While I'm saving up for a mac, I have totally written off Windows and using Ubuntu. It does all the basics perfectly and there are no viruses, spyware etc to worry about (I don't think..)
Best of all its totally FREE, user friendly and very stable.
However I am really looking forward to getting a Mac :-)
Move Away
All this indicates to me is that the thinking at microsoft is that this will force people to buy the operating system and there is no other choice,my personal opinion is people would just get fed up with annoyance, cause lets face it, its annoying with a legal copy. Answer switch to Mac os/Linux.Get rid of extortionate MS os/price why bother.Mac os I would pay for any day.
"can you even get a
"can you even get a legitimage copy of XP anymore?"
Right now Microsoft's l anti-piracy campaign is in high gears across the country. Your destop will turn to black in every 30 minutes if you are running a pirated copy.

Good, I'm glad MS is taking
Good, I'm glad MS is taking measures like these against those who pirate their software. MS deserves to have people pirate their crap because they sell crap. More people will switch to using other free OS's.
