Windows XP upgrade FROM Vista

We know this is supposed to be funny but it rings so true.  For the record, we have Vista running on Parallels - which runs good- not great.  I am also personally writing this from a Sharepoint 2007 deployment certification class that Microsoft teaches in XP, not Vista :'(

Review: Windows XP

I have finally decided to take the plunge. Last night I upgraded my Vista desktop machine to Windows XP, and this afternoon I will be doing the same to my laptop.

Look & Feel

Windows XP has quite a cartoony look and feel compared to the slick look of Aero Glass; this is mostly offset by the lack of strange screen artifacts caused by malfunctioning graphics code. You know, almost like static on the screen. This was a once or twice monthly occurrence on my laptop, and happened on my desktop whenever I logged in, and also whenever I played a 3D game after leaving Vista running for a couple of hours. I also miss the "orphaned windows" I got on Vista, dialog boxes that would not go away, in a sense they became part of the desktop, since you could drag a selection from within them, despite the fact that the Glass would render the selection below them. Such crazy graphics bugs appear to be a thing of the past.

Performance

Well, here there appears to be no contest. Windows XP is both faster and far more responsive. I no longer have the obligatory 1-minute system lock that happens whenever I log onto Vista, instead I can run applications as soon as I can click their icons. Not only that, but the applications start snappily too, rather than all waiting in some "I'm still starting up the OS" queue for 30 seconds or so before all starting at once. In addition, I have noticed that when performing complex tasks such as viewing large images, or updating large spreadsheets, instead of the whole operating system locking down for several seconds, it now just locks down the application I am working on, allowing me to <gasp> Alt-Tab to another application and work on that. I am thrilled that Microsoft decided to add preemptive multitasking to their operating system, and for this reason alone I would strongly urge you to upgrade to XP. With the amount of multi-core processors around today using a multitasking operating system like XP makes a world of difference.

A doomed attempt to cancel a file copy, I had to hard reset the computer after this.

In addition, numerous tasks that take a long time on Vista have been greatly speeded up. File copies are snappy and responsive, and pressing the Cancel button halfway through actually cancels the copy almost immediately, as opposed to having it lock up, and sometimes lock up the PC. In addition, a lot of work has gone into making deletes far more efficient, it appears that no more does the operating system scan every file to be deleted prior to wiping it, and instead just wipes out the NTFS trees involved, a far quicker operation. On my Vista machine I would often see a dialog box from some of my video codec's pop up when deleting, moving or copying videos. No more, now all that is involved is a byte transfer or NTFS operation.

So what they ssay is true?

So what they ssay is true? Vista is a total joke.

if you take a "photo copy"

if you take a "photo copy" of something, its always an inferior version to the original.

I posted this elsewhere: A friend of mine had a disastrous computer crash. He was so angry he said that upgrading from XP to Vista is like being rescued from the Titanic by the Hindenburg.

I find that it doesn't, certainly not the clips you've excerted. Except for the problems with Office 2003 where sometimes they'd lock the whole system's UI for seconds at a time on specific actions, such as things to do with printers and just scrolling around in some spreadsheets. But that's been patched, in Office 2003 itself I belive, for some months now.  This guy really needs to turn on his online patching system. :)

How strange.  I have

How strange.  I have exactly the same problems but on my xp machine.  Am I the only person in the world with a copy of vista that works?  Surely there must be others?  It feels so lonely.

Haha Vista is a piecec o'

Haha

Vista is a piecec o' crap. Now Leopard on the other hand...

Try rolling out Vista at a

Try rolling out Vista at a company. We have had Vista for a year and we have gone through a flat install of Vista on a speedy computer. It was crap and slow. Now we have gone through the Alpha, Beta, Beta 2, Beta 2a, RC1, RC2, RC3, RC3a, RC3b...all with adding 50 new steps to install it. If we could only go back to XP...Vista is counterintuitive, takes double the time to perform a function and triple the time to find out where the heck they moved everything. Wait...why can't we just upgrade to Leopard and quit creeping along with this slow MS 'innovator'??

Why is this here? I thought

Why is this here? I thought this was a mac site, and one that wouldn't stoop so low as to post snarky comments about a competitor.

However, one would have to

However, one would have to ask if it is a "snarky comment" or not? I just visited my next door neighbor after the holiday and she got for Christmas, an HP laptop with Vista Premium already installed and 4 GB RAM. You think that machine would scream! It took 45 seconds to boot up from startup, it has a ton of trial software and when I was visiting the web, every link that was clicked was followed by a "cancel or allow" security window. Can anyone see three "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials in my observation and experiences with my friend's Christmas present? She said she will take it to her brother who is more computer "literate" to clean up the machine and speed it up etc. and I hope so. It's speed for a 4GB RAM machine was ridiculously slow. So again I ask, a "snarky comment" or "coming to a sad realization, cancel or allow". On a side note, her HP laptop has a webcam built in. Does she have to sign up for AOL's AIM and install it's program to get the webcam to come on? Anyone have any ideas how to get that to work?

i've been trying to get my

i've been trying to get my hands on a copy of windows 2k. i'm running xp on my pc at the moment, but to know that the hardware i keep upgrading is so much more effective with a more primitive os would make a reasonable compromise for me. Then again, I hear rumours here and there that win 2k doesn't support more than 1GB of ram? I also heard that win xp doesnt support more than 2gig. Funny as i've had 4 gig installed for a year or two and no one told me that it was overkill.

microsoft is unlogical...

Yes WinXP only supports 2GB,

Yes WinXP only supports 2GB, Got 3Gb in my Mac Pro and with BootCamp the XP only sees 2GB (and 256GB of the 512GB ATI Radeon x1900, but that twice).

I spend my days connecting

I spend my days connecting laptops to the wireless in my college. I'v had my share of trouble with apples but dear god vista has been a joke. I have had computers taking in excess of 7 minutes to boot* up on 2 gigs of ram. By boot up i mean to the point i can actually start working on that bloody networking tool which is pretty annoying.

Yes i have seen perfect vista laptops but at the moment its 1 good to 9 bad..

Windows XP does support more

Windows XP does support more than 2 gigs of ram.  Get a motherboard with more then 2 memory slots, It will take more.  Rumor has it that Vista will actually end up being able to take 8 gigs of ram when the 2 gig Ram sticks are more out there.  It's a conspiracy to require more ram, in a few months or years your high end computers should work much more efficiently when maxed out at 8 gigs of RAM I suspect.  That probably means new processors coming out even.  I'm going to stick with a Core 2 Duo, it runs so well that I wouldn't ask more in a CPU, I can multi take about 11 windows and 6-7 programs without a single freeze up or hold up.  Most programs are optimized under XP.  Vista is terrible.  It's fun for the first 2 days then you realize how much time you are wasting then when you had XP.  100% serious, Vista is for Microsoft to toy with, and XP is for the consumer.  They should have based Vista off of XP more, including the graphic enhancements, and unlimited compatibility with all XP programs because it has been the consumers choice for OSes too long, too much programming to try and waste it a crappy and slow Vista.  I think I'm going to change mouse pointer options and use windows blind to change the lame start menu that is designed for like a teacher or education based facility.

98= 9
2000/ME= 8
XP= 10+
VISTA= 5 or 6

As far as multi tasking, compatibility, smooth running without freeze ups, and it seems more open source in some ways but Vista's open source type atmosphere is childish.  Don't upgrade to Vista if you have less than four gigs of RAM, and I don't know the success of that.  Maybe with DDR3?

ps A LOT OF MY PROGRAMS ARE COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE WITH VISTA NOW.  RARE AND EASY TO USE PROGRAMS WE'RE ACUSIMED TO.  I DON'T EVEN THINK THERE ARE HARDLY ANY ANTI VIRUS OPTIONS.

VISTA SUCKS, I'M SORRY, I WILL PROBABLY NEVER USE IT.  WAIT UNTIL NEXT OS.  HONESTLY IT REALLY SUCKS AND IS POINTLY.  USE THERE PROGRAMS ON YOUR XP TO SPICE IT UP:

WindowsFX by Stardock

Try em it will save you hundreds of dollars, and make your life more complete.
