Windows 7 on VMWare, first look

Since Windows 7 was released, the hype has been pretty good (compared to Vista what wouldn't?).  Well, for those of you wondering if it works on VMWare on Mac, it does.  And pretty well (again vs. Vista).  More below...

Some notes: VMWare will want to do a Vista "automatic install"  Don't do this.  You'll need to do manual.  Also, VMWare tools install without issue.

Total install time on base model 4GB RAM Unibody MacBook while running other programs : <30 minutes.

Won't do an upgrade from XP or Vista without SP1

Idles at 15-30% of 1 CPU

It runs way faster than Vista - on the level of XP.  Seems to be, dare we say...snappier™

VMWare annoyances

3541

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the menu bar appearing along the top when in full screen mode in VMWare Fusion 2? I've been having a play with Windows 7 but this is really annoying me. What's more, I'm pretty sure it wasn't doing this yesterday (did a reformat today).

Well any ideas?

Windows 7 & VMWare Fusion

4533

I don't know if anyone else is experiencing the same problem that I've had, but after a while when trying to run graphics intensive stuff (ie chess titans, screen saver, etc) Windows 7 freezes and I have to force quit VMWare. anyone else had this problem. Btw, I'd take windows 7 over vista (even if win 7 is in beta) any day.

i've had the same problem.

4436

i've had the same problem. It's the Vmware graphics driver that causes it as it is incompatable. Graphics don't really work yet but everything else in the Vmware tools package is fine. Just uninstall the graphics drivers and you'll be able to play the games albeit without any animation.

Anyone tried it in Boot Camp

4537

Anyone tried it in Boot Camp yet?

I have and it flies. Install

3848

I have and it flies. Install was around 20 minutes, apps open just about instantly and it boots quicker than Leopard on my BlackBook 2.0GHz, 3GB RAM. It is a fresh install though so we'll see if it gets slowed down as I install more stuff.

I've also tried it in VirtualBox but it really needs Aero to appreciate the new interface features.

I'm surprisingly impressed with Win7 and I'm hoping Apple will blow it away with Snow Leopard.

I tried it in BootCamp

4339

I have tried it in BootCamp!
First I installed the x64 edition on VMWare, but it really slowed my computer down and it worked really slow itself.
Then I installed the x64 edition on BootCamp, it just runs wonderful (for Windows that is) and I can open it in VMWare.
When I do that (opening the BootCamp partition in VMWare) it runs much faster than to install it on a virtual drive.
The only thing is that you will have to install the x32 version of Windows 7 to install the extra bootcamp software.

Quite frankly, the Taskbar in

4050

Quite frankly, the Taskbar in Windows 7 is very nice and I wish Apple would steal some of Windows 7's features, in that regard. I kind of makes the Dock look... boring.

the task bar looks hideous!

4145

the task bar looks hideous! The dock looks way better. Idk which task bar your looking at. It just looks like a box to me. no detail, just a box with icons in it. They even kept the same home button...

How did you get the NIC to work?

4540

its not working on my fusion v2. Just says no network detected.

But everything else is so quick its untrue.

Also works on the opensource

4146

Also works on the opensource Virtualbox. Choose manual install in a Vista-type machine.

See how MS again ads mac-features like the Dock, dashboard etc.

Windows 7

5242

Apple didn't invent the Dashboard. Both Microsoft and Apple copied the idea from Konfabulator. As for the Dock... No. Windows 7 simply combines the Quick Launch toolbar (around since Windows 98) with the taskbar buttons from Windows 95. So what if it looks like the Dock? The Dock is an application launcher and the taskbar is a window manager. Two largely different goals, they just happen to appear similar.

Obviously, Apple ripped off

3748

Obviously, Apple ripped off the idea for Dashboard. Stolen wholesale, without even the decency to mention where they took the original idea. Which, of course, would be the desk accessories from the original 1984 Macintosh — conceived by Bud Tribble and engineered (mostly) by Andy Hertzfeld. Here’s Hertzfeld on the origin of desk accessories

Microsoft with QBasic? DOS?? Java???

4432

I hope you're not really condemning Apple for doing with when MS has done it for years!!!

anyway... I liked my preview of W-7 so far. It was clean, neat, and a LOT faster -even on VMWare. When installing, I did it under Windows 2008 Server and it works great!

Automatic Vista Install

4138

I actually ran the automatic install for Vista and it worked fine. I agree that the OS seems nice and quick compared to Vista.

It is slow on my iMac 2.8Ghz Core2Duo

4640

On my iMac 2.8GHz Core2Duo, with 2GB dedicated for VMware and using 2CPUs, Windows 7 runs slowly. I even installed VMWare tools. Curiously, when I rebooted it asked me to install VMWare tools again. May be it did not install properly! I am not really a home windows user, so I did it out of sheer novelty!

Do I have to install over XP

4240

Do I have to install over XP or vista as I would rather just clean install the Beta into Fusion

Yeah, that's what we did,

4038

Yeah, that's what we did, just create a new VMWare Image

2.53Ghz unibody 15 inch

4241

2.53Ghz unibody 15 inch macbook pro with Fusion...which version of Windows 7 32 or 64 Bit?

32-Bit for sure.

4145

32-Bit for sure.

can you say a bit more on why 32-bit?

4137

some of the other mac sites are recommending 64-bit claiming some programs such as Adobe AE get benefits from 64-bit environment. Was wondering what your reasoning was. Thanks!

Compatibility was much better

3839

Compatibility was much better for most of the people who've installed it.

Funny you should mention to

3742

Funny you should mention to not do a Vista automatic install for the Windows 7 beta. It worked perfectly fine with me. (I'm using Fusion 2.0.1 and the 64-bit flavor.)

Windows7

3638

Windows7 on VMware is brilliant. Bonjour installed with no problems and Brother Laser printer on Airport network detected. Windows7 loaded in less than 20 minutes on new VMware virtual drive - load serial number in Windows - easier. MUCH faster than Vista. Runs together with XP in another window/screen - obviously mapping of CD drive an issue. No problem with network and have installed the first 2 Window7 updates (a driver in my case) Have installed on a standard unibody :-)) macBook 2.4/4Gb/320Gb/VMware2/10.5.6 etc... We need Windows on the Mac because I have many clients struggling day-to-day every day on Windows XP/Vista systems and I need a system that works. Haven't tried the new SUN virtual system yet, thats next. Have scrapped Parallels because every time I try to upgrade, there are serial number issues and payments and development serial numbers. On top of that I tried Parallels 4 and it wouldn't import my XP system from previous version. VMware imported perfectly. Alas can't remove Parallels toolbox on XP from within a VMware engine. VMware toolbox (whatever the name is) installed perfectly on Windows7

Looks like...

Linux. Good move Ballmer.

Yes, this was also my first impression! It looks like my KDE desktop at work.

Installed it sunday on my

3844

Installed it sunday on my MacMini (Bootcamp), iMac (Parallels) and Compaq Mini700. All work absolutely fine.

I put a video of the MacMini on Youtube !! Search for Windows 7 MacMini.

works great for me

4141

I installed it on VMWare just to see how it would go and it's streets ahead of Vista. There's nothing rad about it, but just tidies up a bad microsoft. I can't stand using Windows but I'm impressed.

Windows 7 Works flawlessly but still behind OpenStep

3540

I've got all of the goodies running without hangups or errors but the OS is still behind OpenStep. There is one problem I have sent to VMWare in changing the Virtual disk size.

I must admit though, Windows 7 is far better than Vista.
