iPhone comes to Wal*Mart

Share

November 15th.  Mark it on your calendar.  That is the date when the iPhone is coming to Wal*Mart according to BGR.  While it may sicken a few of you to have your precious Jesusphone in the hands of Joe Six-pack, it does open a lot of revenue and marketshare opportunities for our favorite company.   It also puts Apple in front of many more faces for the holiday buying season.  With the economy in a slump, that doesn't hurt.

That market share also extends to iPhone developers who will have a much wider audience of customers from which to sell their wares.  Is there a NASCAR app yet?  Get crackin'!

With Apple/AT&T's home pre-activation plans, the process will be easier than before (but still harder than gen 1) and Wal*Mart won't have too much of a learning curve for their uninsured employees to have to train on.

No word yet on when/if Radio Shack will be joining the party.

It is very clear that the economic landscape is changing and we are witnessing what is referred to as "Economic Darwinism" whether we like it or not. What makes the distribution in ATT or Best Buy any better? The strong will survive and no doubt WalMart has built a strong business model whether you like it or not. Personally I am not a WalMart fan, but I get the concept and understand why those who shop there like it. I once frowned at Costco and you know what? I tried it and liked it.

The real victims of the new economy we see crumbling and being rebuilt around us is the destruction of the so called "Mom and Pop" electronic stores.

However, one never knows as we watch the fall of the large Investment Banks. Almost surely Wall Street will reinvent itself in the form of what it once was in the 60s where thousands of small boutique companies will pop up before they once again merge and form the monsters that have caused what is now happening.

costco is a decent place to work. walmart is not, especially if you are a woman. all the same, it will be very convenient when people can buy ammo, bulk diapers, and iphones in one stop.

That sucks, The iphone is a sweet piece, if you have a problem you want help getting it fixed. The apple stores have answers and even some best buy stores can answer a question, I personally can never find an employee in the electronics section of wal-mart let alone someone that knows the difference between 2g and 3g.

The Walmart shoppers generally know nothing. Who will be handling the sales? I would be okay with radio shack but Walmart? The customers will try to eat the phones.

The employs in the electronic section kill me. Heres something that happened the other day.
Customer: "Can you help me? I cant get songs on my ipod nano.
Wallmart employ: I don't know what the problem is... I dont use ipods. May I suggest you return it and get this one right here or a zune. (directs customer to some noname mp3 player)
Customer:ok
employ leaves
Me: Hey I heard you were having a problem with your ipod nano, Did you install itunes on your computer?
Customer: no.
Me: ok, thats your problem, you can download it from apples webpage or just google search for itunes.
Customer: thank you.

Apple is just selling out, the third generation is on his way!

I'm not buying this rumor. It's one thing to sell the phone at Best Buy, which is arguably a specialty electronics store. Walmart deteriorates the brand. How can Apple sell any of it's products at Walmart and justify it's own retail concept which is clearly a sophisticated, classy and cool model.

The imagery associated with this is killing me.

I'm British, so call me back when the iPhone's available in Tesco.

Of all places...

What would the Nascar app be, just tilt your phone to the left and hold it there for 4 hours?

>>What would the Nascar app be, just tilt your phone to the left and hold it there for 4 hours?

Strong. Flying billboards turning left all day.

Will it at least be cheaper at Mal Wart?

Okay, I get the reference here as we stereotype all NASCAR fans as being trashy and then we stereotype all Wal-Mart shoppers as being Nascar fans. I don't know if you have ever bought a ticket to a Nascar event or even just priced them, but it isn't cheap.

I think it's a little immature. Not every city can have an Apple Store, and believe it or not, every city is not able to be the host to a Best Buy (which is MAYBE 1 step better than Target and MAYBE 2 steps better than Wal-Mart). Is there really a problem with offering a less expensive solution? A lot of the products Wal-Mart sells are comparable to the Sony and Panasonic products. They match up pixel by pixel.

My problem is with the way this article has been written. The article is ignorant(almost as ignorant as some of the comments). You might as well start stereotyping people from different ethnic groups while you are at it.

The imagery? What kind of asshole are you? Before moving to Chicago and then again moving out to Seattle for work, I grew up in a very rural area. The people in these areas work very hard to get by. Just because their job is milking the cow that produces the cream that goes into your $6 latte at Starbucks doesn't make them less human. Heaven forbid these people shop at a place where they can save money.

Apple has been selling products to rural areas for a long time. Show me a school in the United States that didn't start with an Apple II.

Being an "Apple Fanboi" to me is about being accepting and trying to convince everybody that they should have an Apple product, not just an elite few.
