EDIT: These didn't happen in 1.1.2 - most likely these will be a 1.2.x update.
Some tidbits inside the recently updated iTunes 7.5 show that the iPhone and iPod Touch will soon operate more like their older iPod bretheran in allowing direct disk access and manual media management. Also, a voice memo sync seems to exist in the code as well - though it has been in there since iTunes 7.3.
It looks like a new (sactioned) iPhone application will allow voicenotes (on iPhones only obviously - no audio-in on iPod Touch). Voice memo.app anyone? This should allow iPhone 1.1.2 or 3ers to have access to the same great functionality that hacked iPhone users have been enjoying for months thanks to Erica Sadun's Voice Notes.

I love having the hacked
I love having the hacked voice memo app on my iPhone, it's very handy, and was of significant value in a recent medical situation I was involved in; however, there's no doubt the Apple one will be slicker, and will have the ability to sync and backup the voice memos automatically via iTunes.
Once again, Apple will be adding a new feature in the .upgrade that tempts you back into the fold so they can break your other apps. Nuts. But I'll be saying no to any .upgrade until I am sure my phone can stay jailbroken, or the absolute killer apps are available from Apple.
Killer apps for me: voice memo, AIM/Yahoo iChat, some decent games.
As far as disk access goes, it just occurred to me that with a jailbroken phone and a very small amount of Unix ssh and scp knowledge, or a decent SFTP client like Fugu, you already have disk access with your iPhone...just put files you want to carry around on the iPhone into the media section with scp or sftp and pull them off whenever you need them. Trivial stuff with the freely available right tools and a few minutes reading the instructions.

As a Touch owner, I'm sick of being treated like a foster child.
If Apple gives Voice Notes to all other iPod users, and gives it to iPhone, why the hell should they exclude from ONE and only ONE other unit, the Touch?
Isn't it an 'iPod" after all? If not, then what the hell is it?
I think this really just shows how afraid they are that the Touch is a hackable VOIP device, and that would kill their precious iPhones.

Apple purposely disabled the "line in" capacity because they don't want us hacking it for VOIP. They don't want us to take AT&T revenue away from them. Do you think it was an Act of God that there is no audio in on the Touch, yet there is an audio in on every other iPod/Phone they produce? Contrary to popular belief
Contrary to popular belief on this post the iPod Touch DOES HAVE audio in. Of course, it was revealed days after this discussion, so it's a moot point, but I thought it might be nice to let anyone else know following this thread that the audio in on the ipod touch is working just fine, and there's a hack to make a microphone for it :)
