costs of SMS video?

Does anyone know if sending and/or received SMS video only costs "1 SMS" message from the provider's vantage point? My big fear is that an SMS video will the sender and receiver more than 20 cents each.

ANd Holy Cow, is the catchpa gone???

It's going to be charged at

It's going to be charged at the MMS rate. Depending on your provider that may be bundled in your free SMS, part of your data allowance, or a separate allowance/charge. I've seen all 3 over the years.

For AT&T in the us it will

For AT&T in the us it will not cost extra because MMS uses your data not SMS or other messages. Because you are required to have unlimited internet, MMS will not cost you extra. (According to AT&T)

Already seen pictures showing a scrub like feature for video.

Why is it taking so long for people to see video may be real big, but they're not going to add all features for a bit, so as not to totally spoil hardware updates?

Like you know where Slovenia is (next to Italy and Austria), an sms costs me 0.05€, MMS 0.10€, that's after 1001 FREE SMSs and 1001 FREE MMS - for 15€/month, 1GB of data, 1001 minutes - FREE...

Just making you jelaous - oh, and BTW, we're not some 3rd world country, we were actualy the 7th 3G country and 4th 3,5G :->

But we get macs for a kidney and liver, no where cheaper :-/ (entry mac is 1050€, Entry MBP is 1870€)... Crap... I want to move to US just for that :P

Oh, and my dear neighbour (Italy), 50 Euro cents is 0,76$ :-/

As for the article - tell me todays date again? :P

I wish my carrier was iPhone

I wish my carrier was iPhone instead of AT&T.

(I don't actually have an iPhone, but isn't it supposed to say AT&T or 3G or Edge or something? Does it actually say iPhone next to the service bars?)

No it usually says AT&T and

MMS and all that stuff....

3942

MMS is multi-media. That would be pictures, sounds, & videos. If you watch the iPhone 3.0 event, they talked about voice recording on the iPhone. This is to let you record your voice or some audio and then send it via MMS. The same with pictures. For the iPhone to be compliant with MMS standards, it will have to have some type of video recording setup.

I live in the USA, and I have an iPhone using AT&T wireless service. We have unlimited data plans. When I converted my account over to my iPhone, the only thing that changed was the $30USD unlimited data plan. Everything else stayed the same.

Some of my friends had complained to me about my iPhone. They wanted to be able to send me MMS, (mainly pictures), to my iPhone. They presumed that they couldn't send them to me.

I did a little research on MMS. I found out that any mobile phone can send MMS not only to a mobile phone, but to any eMail address on the internet. I also found out that using my iPhone I could send MMS to mobile phones. Most mobile carriers have special eMail gateways setup for this. They use special eMail address for the phones, and the servers will convert it over.

The MMS is very limited. The pictures are real small, and the videos will only about 6 seconds in length. It doesn't look as good as the iPhone pictures. The ability to have send and receive direct MMS with another mobile would be nice. Using eMail is a pain.

I asked my friends to look at the mobile phone bills and see what the MMS costs them. Most of them had either an unlimited messaging plan (SMS & MMS), or the MEDIA.net service (unlimited MMS only). This works out well. We can share photos of events, just not as fast.

Here is a link to AT&T's FAQ's on messaging. Has some good information:

Here is a list of eMail gateways for SMS and MMS to phones:

http://www.modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/MMS_Email_Addresses

I did take my SIM out of my iPhone and put it in regular AT&T phone. I was able to send and receive direct MMS from phone to phone on my iPhone account. It can take up to 15 minutes for the servers to recognize the MMS functions, when you swap our your SIM card; but it works just like any other phone.

I am personally shocked that AT&T would offer an unlimited data plan. I knew that I wanted an iPhone, but I wouldn't be able to afford the outrageous data-bills. But with Apple partnering up with AT&T, and them making the data unlimited; that has broken down all of the barriers for using a phone. AT&T has lowered the costs to the regular mobile phone data plans as well as for the smart phones. Do you remember paying $3USD for a ringtone? That blows my mind.

My wish is for other countries to open up their data plans. I know that Canada is getting the shaft from Rogers Communication on their iPhone. It is a major ripp-off. I think that it is the same in Australia too. If these companies would make the data available at a reasonable rate, then the consumers would be more inclined to spend more on other services.

I would encourage each one of you to write real letter (not an eMail) and complain to your mobile carrier, in a respectful manor, about being overcharged for data. They will make more money if the data rates are lower, then more subscribers will use data. A happy customer will stay with that company, and more than likely buy addition services or features.

Anyway, have fun out there. I can't wait for 3.0!!!

PEACE,

Alex
