Verizon's latest Droid ad's 'no princess'
Here's the latest Verizon Droid ad, which assures us the Motorola-made device isn’t a princess and can, we’re informed, ‘rip through the web like a circular saw through a ripe banana’. Lovely image...
Try another: “Its not a princess, its a robot. A phone that trades hair-do for can-do. In a world of doesn’t. Droid Does.” Verizon/Motorola/Google are definitely taking the masculine angle with this advertizing campaign.

I hope Verizon did not pay for this ad! It misses the mark on so many fronts! What demographic are they going after? Who did the audio? What were they drinking during their creative sessions? Year, after year, after year Verizon misses the mark on so many fronts, sans the "We got a map for that!" (which was original), when it comes to marketing and device selection. I guess it is a hangover from the old "Ma Bell" days ... when you could have any color phone ... as long as it was black! But, upon reflection, if you have a device that lacks design style (like a iPhone, HTC, pre, etc.) I guess this type of ad is about all you can do.
Lets try (here's the key: TRY) breaking their points down here:
1. Should a phone be pretty? or Fast? - (They claim they chose fast rather than pretty, apparently you can only choose one or the other). If i recall correctly, the 3GS has a faster processor than the droid (and hey, i'm not going to complain that its also a very well designed, good looking phone)
2. If the iPhone is just a "tiara wearing, digitally clueless, beauty pageant queen" Why on earth would every other smartphone manufacturer (including Motorola) try to copy it and then try to convince everyone that they are the true "iPhone Killer" - without realizing that by doing so they are only recognizing that the iPhone IS the best.
3. Other than those attempts at proving something… the rest just seems to mumble on about odd/random things such as princesses, robots, porcelain figurines, hair do's and cutting through ripe bananas.
Conclusion: Interesting ad… not very good at proving anything though… better luck next time guys.
I think that sums up every Droid ad. I really like my Droid, but I don't think the ads to anything to showcase the Droids abilities.
I don't own a droid... I have an iphone... I have played with and used a droid quite a bit in the last few days. I can honestly say the screen is noticeably better than the iphone. Makes the web browsing easier. As for software, the iphone excels on everything. period! The one thing the droid absolutely blows the iphone out of the water in.... Making calls! Excellent reception and voice quality! I know different networks, right? Probably... but the iphone has one of the worse phone radios I've ever experienced! If you're having problems with your ATT call connections, don't be so quick to say the network sucks... try this: go to walmart and buy one of those pay as you go phones from ATT... The $30 nokia... swap your sim card... make a couple calls in spots known for not so good coverage... thank you. Apple, fix the radio in the iphone! Please!
I did. I also have a motorola razr on AT&T. It's reception is as bad or worse than my iPhone.
AT&Ts network stinks!
Motorolas ad stinks.
There's a map for that was funny because it was true.
This ad is stupid. The iPhone is faster than the droid. iPhone is the smartest phone out there and best looking. And I bet it's more rugged than the girly delicate droid with it's slide out keyboard.
so basically they are excluding all the girls and gays that like a pretty phone, STUPID! Millions turned away!
Please do not include comments about dropped calls, or signal, or 3gs signal of the phone, when everybody knows that is not the phone it's the carrier. Everybody knows that Verizon covers more with 3gs, but in the places where both have strong signals and 3gs AT&T is the winner hands down. So lets just talk about this junkaphone, i mean Dr¨oid.
The ad is trying to appeal to the demographic that thinks Apple makes overpriced toys; toys that only fluffy irrelevant people use. Whereas this product is a proper industrial tool. Whatever that means. I think the message is pretty shallow but it probably appeals to someone.
I wonder how much they paid Lucas for the rights to use the word "droid".
I have the same question regarding the licensing of the word Droid. I think it's genius that Lucas TM'd that word to begin with. Now I can't wait for the Apple ad with Ewen Mcgegor that portrays VZ as the 'evil empire' and has Ewen promoting the iPhone by saying, "This is not the Droid you're looking for."
"King of the Hill", everybody attacks Apple's iPhone, which is at the top of heap. Apple must be doing something right. However, I and I'm sure most iPhone users are not going to switch to another phone over night. I've seen this over and over for the past few years, "the iPhone killer", a lot fizzle and no pop. Talk is cheap, keep trying...,

People need to realize there are various types or categories when it comes to marketing and advertising. I don't think Verizon is trying to sell you on any specific features of the Droid (there are/will be other spots for that). Rather, VZW is implying the Droid is a 'tool' and not a 'toy' when in comparison to other smartphones, particularly the iPhone. I don't think VZW really thinks it's going to lure iPhone users away from AT&T. Rather, they're targeting users who are in the market for a smartphone that feel the iPhone is not a serious device. Whether or not those users' perceptions are flawed is another question, but it's clear Verizon's direction is to market the place the Droid in the category of a serious, no-nonsense device.
how flattering!!
I live in New Jersey. I had Verizon for years, but left for Cingular to buy a RAZR for considerable less than what Verizon wanted to sell it to me, even with the discount ['new every two']. I found no difference in phone service, but Cingular customer service was better than Verizon, and service did not change when they became ATT. Now I have an iPhone. I almost never get dropped calls, and the rare occurance was simialr to my Verizon service. Also, voice quality is no different than my old RAZR or Treo 650, than it is with the iPhone, or my old Verizon. Therefore, it can nly be your location, hence ATT service, that yield different experiences with dropped calls and voice quality. I have 5 friends with an iPhone with the exact same experience. In fact, three of them haad a Treo as well. They ATT 3G map is all green in my area, which probably makes the difference.
...but I'd still rather have iPhone. You can f**k the Princess, the robot ..not so much.
I really don't like the image of carrying around a horse that is strapped to a missle. This commerical looks like It was conceptualized in the early 90's
this commercial is aimed at the standard guy who is afraid of anything that isn't masculine. its got much less substantive information about the phone or what it does than the iphone does. i guarantee i will see this phone soon at an ag college near me….(ag means agriculture)
Ok. I have a Droid. I LOVE IT. I don't know if it is better than an iphone, I haven't owned one. I suspect the iphone is a very good phone. Anyway, the Droid's design is such that most people who are interested in sleek, pretty styling won't like it's looks as much as the iphones. So, the ads they have been running are designed to make it seem like a kick ass, industrial tool that gets things done. Using generalizations, men would be most attracted to that. A new survey done by YouGov's says it's working.
Let's face it a single phone can't be attractive to all market segments. There will be many more Motorola Android phones (and other companies) coming out each month. All markets will targeted, and the advertising will follow.

That was before this ad was released.
Previous ads were good
This ad is aweful and very untrue.
It's only really going to appeal to hardcore geeks, isn't it?
Wow the first phone designed for bigots and rednecks. Way to go Motorola.
how is it for biggots and rednecks... ur a dumb.
I listened to the ad at about :15 8-10 times. The speaker definitely says "cicular" saw, not "circular" saw.
it be a little misleading but i like the commerical. its just kinda funny, and i DID chuckle when i saw it on TV... race horse duct taped to a scud missle fast XD - its a little more... masculine than the iPhone ads.
Actually the Verizon message is that Droid is equal to obsolete soviet technology.
