Verizon anti-iPhone cheat sheet

From Giz comes Verizon's anti iPhone cheat sheet - to help employees deal with the deluge of iPhone questions.

These are actually some good talking points, even though it does scratch the surface of why the iPhone is so popular.

That's Microsoft mentality. "Well, it does XYZ therefore it's better!"

The user experience of the product actually means something. I know, news flash. Why is OS X gaining so much ground? Because it provides a better user experience, not because it has more XYZ software.

They are good talking points, trying to shift focus to what they do better, but obviously we all see they are ignoring the capabilities of the iPhone, which consumers have already decided is worth the premium.

All I know is that I paid more per month with Verizon for a comparable plan, and I found that Verizon service was crap (despite their self-produced "maps").

I switched from Verizon to AT&T and now have much better service.

Verizon is expert at telling everyone how great they are, but in practice, they suck pretty bad in terms of voice quality. But of course, I live in a minor outlying area (Boston).

Note: I do not own an iPhone. I just base my statements on how I find the quality and price of Verizon versus other carriers in the Boston area. I have zero affiliation with any phone company or carrier, except as a customer (or former customer).

iPhone has more features, but Blackberry for verizon does better in the features it possesses.

the iPhone vs. BB comes down to nothing but AT&T vs Verizon issue. There is no question Verizon offers better connection. Whoever says Verizon's call quality is worse than AT&T is just flat out hating or lying. I do like iPhone a lot, but AT&T is pure garbage.

and it's interesting how people are waiting for GPS in iPhone. What good is GPS if it does not connect? Once you step out of metropolitan area you will lose GPS connection anyway.

Please read about the GPS technology before you comment on it. I live in Europe (pretty far away from US and EU metropolitan areas) and *surprise* the GPS works. Satellites doesn't really care about metro areas... :)

There is no question Verizon offers better connection. Whoever says Verizon's call quality is worse than AT&T is just flat out hating or lying.

You're a Verizon FanBoy or you are paid, directly or indirectly, by Verizon. Sorry to tell you that I honestly believe and have personally experienced generally lousier Verizon service versus AT&T _and_ T-Mobile.

My experience? Being a fairly recent customer of all three of those services for over a year each. And I speak as someone who hasn't had a landline at home for over 5 years. Oh, nor do I have a landline at work.

In my major metro area, Verizon is at the bottom of my list. And that's just real-world experience talking. Even Consumer Reports rates these services just about the same. But don't take my word for it, or VerizonWeenieBoy's word - try the services for yourself.

and you sir are an apple fanboy who will never condemn an apple product or any service which apple has chosen as necessary to operate said products i.e iPhone + ATT and i can tell you, being one of the millions of 3G owners, the majority of which are discontent with their ATT service, that in some rural areas ive found ATT to be a better service but in cities and other such urban areas verizon continues to reign

I have tried both.

Was a Verizon customer for 20 years (GTE Moblenet -> Verizon Cell). Service was consistent and clear. Wanted the iPhone so bad that I switched. Can't complain about the iPhone itself, the interface is beautiful and I actually use a lot of the functions of the phone (besides just talking). Email and SMS is SO MUCH EASIER on iPhone than my old Blackberry. The monthly cost is actually a little cheaper than my original Verizon Data/Text plan (here in the Midwest), BUT, service (both voice and data) has no comparison to Verizon's voice and data. It was rock solid.
Metro service here for AT&T (Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Louisville) SUCKS compared to my old Verizon service. I've dropped more calls the last 2-1/2 months than I have in 20 years. In fact, I can't even remember the last time I dropped a call with my Verizon cell. Data service can be spotty, and there are times I get zero bars in a spot I normally get five.
I do agree the 2.1 update helps, and maybe things will improve so I'm sticking with the iPhone (don't have a real choice unless I buy out my contract).

Oh, and BTW, I checked the Consumer Reports article about cell service, AT&T is pretty much on the bottom of every Metro area in terms of service and call-quality. Verizon and Alltel are listed as the best.

I have Alltel now, but previously had Sprint for several years and my wife has had Verizon FOREVER. I needn't go into how much less coverage Sprint ACTUALLY has and how little their roaming agreements do for them (or their customers). What I will say is that my wife has had consistent coverage across the board (never drops a call). My brother has had AT&T since back when they were Cingular (when Cingular bought AT&T's wireless service - the first time 'round) and he said that AT&T's service has been horrible ever since they bought Cingular (and since its network was moved over to GSM). He hates his service; he said he's always dropping calls. The ONLY reason he keeps it is because everyone he talks to has AT&T also. GSM quality can never compare to CDMA. Half of the people I talk to love their iPhone, but HATE their voice service and have been disappointed in the "3G" service as well. Sprint's EVDO service is top notch and their voice clarity is as if you're on a land-line (their coverage is just sub-par).

Does faster data have any value at all. I say $10 per more for the 3G speed over the 2G (if available in your area) is fair. I believe AT&T charges this same data rate for other 3G phones that it offers.

Yeah. I think they made a big mistake by promoting the price cut the way they did. Steve and Co. should have been more explicit that it was subsidized @ $200 rather than trying load up the hype train. It's become a stupid form of ammo now that companies like ATT are putting the 3G on their normal rates, rather than a special Apple rate. $10/mo is also more than worth it for the higher speeds, if you can get them.

Verizon is losing customers by the bucket and is trying to help their battered sales force do some damage control. They're running scared and kicking themselves for not betting on Steve Jobs and his vision. Everybody knows this is the iPod all over again.

Actually Apple went to Verizon first with the iPhone to ask them to cover it, but in reality how does Steve Jobs even play into this at all? You're just some Apple yuppie who doesn't know anything (ps, i write this on a nice new black Macbook, no I didn't want the fragile newer one) because Steve Jobs pertains to Windows and Bill Gates. The combatants are Microsoft/Apple, and Verizon/AT&T. This has got nothing to do with the iPod, except that the iPhone is derived from the iPod. Second of all, Apple is in fact losing customers also. Except for the people who jumped at the opportunity to get an iPhone (both now and the 2G), nobody is buying them anymore because it's a wildly expensive phone, with stuff that many people deem unnecessary. Who needs a phone that can surf the web. Your company will buy you a blackberry for free, and cover it, and it gets your email still. And, if you so desire, turn-by-turn directions, something the iPhone does not have.
While it is true that Verizon is doing damage control, your reasons couldn't be any more wrong if you really tried. It is clear that you have made this up to try and sound smart over the internet. Too bad you are wrong.
Finally, more relevantly, I don't think that the iPhone is going to go Verizon soon. Not at least until 2010. But they should. Apple makes much more money per iPhone sold, than how much they make on the iPhone contracts. That's AT&T's bank. They want to start selling more phones, so they can make money again. Can't honestly blame them either.

adding to that point, Verizon most definitely gets better service than AT&T on all fronts, seeing as Verizon is said to "dominate the east coast", and AT&T the west coast. However, I go to school in California, and I live in Connecticut. And use verizon happily. On the west coast, my phone works great. I have never once not had service except when I'm underground. Granted, I rarely have full bars, but I have never ever gotten a call dropped. However, I have friends who use AT&T, both Iphone and not. Both of them get pretty reliable service, but it ranges from full bars to zero bars. I don't call that reliable service. On the east coast, I have full bars everywhere, except for basements, where I only get one bar. Shame. Iphones here have to be on the ground floor, near a window, or on the top floor of a house to get enough service to make an audible call.

I'm amazed with my iphones capabilities and the service up to this point. I've owned it for two weeks and haven't had a issue yet. The 3g has been a little sketchy here and there but never has it been so slow that it has let me down when I'm showing it off.

Verizon offers a phone better than the iPhone...wait that is a myth! :-)

I am currently using a verizon krzr and enjoy it ... NOT!
They cripple the phones to a point where they just make calls and text. So if the Iphone was to move to verizon they would replace apples os X to the verizon os (programed in cobals (not even close to as great as C) by old people without benifets, my grandpa is a verizon programer. ). It would be an ugly 1999 looking ui. It would have bluetooth disabled. It would not be able to recongize more than one touch within 0.3 seconds. It would have 4 hours of battery life ( the verizon os is very wasteful). You would be nickled and dimed all over the place. You would be able to download songs from itunes for 2.99 and it will say that when you connect it to your computer your song will be transferred. Only to tell you that when you try to play it that it only works on the verizon k1m with (my phone number). You would not be able to charge it on macs and if it broke you would get a cheap knockoff that looks like the phone you bought.

I'll be honest, I hate Verizon just as much as the next guy... HOWEVER!!

1) "They cripple the phones to a point where they just make calls and text."

Which phone is it, that despite hackers best efforts, still doesn't have features that your piddly little KRZR does? Yep, iPhone.

2) "It would have bluetooth disabled."

With the exception of a hands-free ear-piece, what else can you do with the bluetooth on an iPhone? No, really, think of something... I'll wait... Oh, nothing? Okay, moving on.

3) "It would have 4 hours of battery life ( the verizon os is very wasteful)"

And the OS X isn't wasteful? According to Apple's website, the iPhone can eek out about 5 hours of use on 3G. Wow, a whole hour. Well I guess that's a lot of porn that could be downloaded in that hour.

4) "You would be nickled and dimed all over the place."

Okay, so $30 extra for just the data plan ($45 for a business plan), and $20 for text messaging isn't being 'nickled and dimed'? Hmmm...

5) "if it broke you would get a cheap knockoff"

At least you get a replacement phone. What do you get if your iPhone breaks? $400 bucks poorer is what you get.

I've heard the expression "The kettle calling the pot black," but I think this is taking it a bit to the extreme.

Oh, yeah, everyone wants a KRZR... LOL... (But he thinks eveyrone else is a moron...) LOL.

true but they do it to thier iphone "killers" to Except the os has a black theme. (the voyager to name one). Also I hear alot of people complaining about the lack of a streaming service for the iphone. Does'nt it have the best streaming service in the world, youtube.
And I thank you for listening to my first rant.

1. Good point however the things you can do with motorola's os on it is far more than that of the verizon.
2. Well um data transfer of any sort it wont even let you dial from a bluetooth thats capable of it. you have to get your phone dial the number talk on your headset and then grab the phone again to hang up.
3. The problem is that I was talking about 5 hours of having the screen on, no calling and airplane mode disabled. you dont get any where close to that in talk time.
4. The easiest of all ok $2.99 per megabyte in less you have a data plan for $30 (even when your downloading apps that you bought from their get it now service and mms). $10 a month for getting your email synced to the device, $2.99 for visual voice mail $20 a month for unlimited text or 0.10 a text $1 per multimedia messageing. $3.99 for a ringtone. $2.99 to dowload a song over the network. $10 a month for internet. $5 a month for vcast. a $30 one time fee to sync and charge your phone with your computer. The only free applications are 4 minute demos. So that is $81 +your voice plan a month to get it to have the same services.
5. That there is if you bought there warrenty that costs $5 a month and then you have to pay an extra $50 to get the phone. (so two years and one repair costs more than the 3 year protection from apple)

So You have very good points right there and I know that The krzr k1m does not compare even close to that of the iphone. But being the argumenative person I am I have to comment.

P.S. good quote

For the record, good points although one could definitely argue the value and necessity of some of those features? Like visual voicemail? Most phones can't even do that because the camera is... oops! on the wrong side of the phone.

Second, the validity of your arguments is augmented immeasurably if you use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I actually found it painfully difficult to decipher your 9-year-old/internet chat room dialect, because you cannot navigate a sentence lacking commas, with commas in the wrong places (I point to the #2 argument), and I caught an "in less" instead of what I believe you meant to say, "unless"

I don't quite get your first comment at all, why are you comparing the Motorola OS and the Verizon OS? You should be comparing Apple/AT&T and Verizon/Motorola

Also, your math is wrong. You get 78$, unless you are downloading games and ringtones left and right, or at least one per month, which you most-fucking-definitely should not ever do. You're parents get mad at you for 50$ in ringtone/game charges because they're stupid and rip off. Every phone company kills you on those. Just like Xbox charges $60 for a game when the actual disc cost them $0.07, and burning it cost $0.03.

5) "if it broke you would get a cheap knockoff"

At least you get a replacement phone. What do you get if your iPhone breaks? $400 bucks poorer is what you get.

Eh? Verizon doesn't give you free phones either. Break your Verizon cell phone and Verizon will happily charge you retail for a replacement, which STARTS at $150 for the most basic model, and which easily exceeds $400 for a basic smart phone.

Remember that all plans I can find on Verizon's site are for a 2-year contract.

Okay, so $30 extra for just the data plan

Facts: The 450 minute plan with unlimited data is $70 through AT&T. The 450 minute plan with 5 GB of data is $80 through Verizon. Compare all you want - AT&T easily wins on price.

I sense you're a Verizon shill. Are you?

My non-Contract KRZR price thru Verizon: $350.

The KRZR _is_ KRZY stupid.

as long as Verizon dun have any chinese input phone, i don't care how great their phone or plan is! How de hell i txt or email my business partner over Sea?

You could use broken Engrish like you did in your comment

LOL, but seriously, get the iPhone, you know you want it...

you clearly don't have any business partners overseaS (capitalized for emphasis), because you don't understand the phrase overseas. Not over Sea (capitalized for no reason). Also, Chinese people can, in fact, read English. They've been learning it in school for years. And it's mandatory to graduate, not like a foreign language in America that you can fail and ignore.

Also, learn to type. Don't. The word is don't.

Verion is attacking AT&T - not specifically the iPhone. Everything they say is accurate. Verizon has a larger EVDO network, AT&T is charging more for the 3G plan and AT&T does charge $20 for unlimited SMS.

The iPhone is a great device. It's not perfect, but better overall than anything else I've seen. Verizon can only go after what they can control. The network and pricing plans. For these, they are spot on.

Verizon are the world's biggest idiots for passing on the iPhone. They make the guy who turned down the Beatles look less stupid. (He's still stupid, but at least he has company there with the MORON at Verizon who turned down Apple.) Epic fail.

Also making the list, Bill Gates for saying 649k is all you will ever need. Also the IBM guy who said, there may be a market for 7 computers someday...

This has made me even more happy for leaving verizon last week. I love my iPhone.

Verizon has shitty iclones that are ultra bulky with mediocre pressure touch screens. Check.

AT&T carries the ORIGINAL iPhone that flipped the industry and is reason the whole telecom industry is rethinking itself. Check.
