iPhone modem tethering? Yes!

Yes, BoyGenius jumped the gun a little bit by saying that AT&T-Apple was endorsing USB modem tethering of the iPhone - they aren't and won't.

That doesn't mean you have to give up the dream, however.  Bluetooth DUN Modem tethering has been available on the iPhone since July of last year - it was acually one of Nate True's first hacks.  Check the video for more...

Also, for step by step instructions (from September) on using WiFi (tiny proxy) as a modem on the iPhone, check here.

If you haven't jailbroken your iPhone, what are you waiting for?  It really has never been safer/easier.

Remember, though, all you are going to get is EDGE Speed - which is a whole lot better than nothing.

Is modem tethering when you use your iphone as your internet source for your computer at home? For instance, I no longer need comcast internet because I can hook my iphone up to my computer and get the internet through the phone? Is it as fast as comcast? How fast can it go?

EDGE can carry data speeds

1921

EDGE can carry data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots)

that is why so many want 3G iPhone

HSDPA(3G) provides improved theoretical down-link performance of up to 14.4 Mbit/s. Existing deployments provide up to 7.2 Mbit/s in down-link.

Please don't ditch your Comcast service for BT tethering from your iPhone. If you do, we'll soon be hearing from you in the looney bin. It's nice to have available in a pinch, but will drive you bonkers trying to use it all of the time - unless all you like to do is visit one page per day!  ;^)   I used to be on Verizon's EVDO network (much faster than AT&T's Edge) and I would BT tether my Windows Mobile device to my Mac.  Speeds were horrible still. Can't imagine trying to do it on a slower network.

What I want is a 3G iPhone

What I want is a 3G iPhone that will broadcast as a Wi-Fi hotspot (without all of the hacking involved).  Just press a "broadcast" button and I have my own password protected on-the-go hotspot for my laptop, wife's iPod Touch, and friends sitting near by.

I don't understand how that demo worked? As far as I know you can only have either edge or wifi enabled but not both at the same time. It seems impossible to wirelessly tether to the iPhone which then uses edge to send the data. It has to use either Bluetooth or a cable.

Normally I would not use a random board for this question but has any other person noticed that you can no longer post on Yahoo Finance Blogs with your iPhone? I seem to be able to post here. I have tried switching from wifi and the EDGE nothing worked. I have cleared my cookies, cache, and history with still no luck. I can however post with my computer and laptop. Interesting however even if some how its my iPhone....but I doubt it. I really think that (as Google reported today the iPhone causes 50 times more activity than any other handset) Yahoo may have had too much traffic and suspended posting abilities. That's what I believe and to cut down on random posting. I would love to hear some feedback. Thanks!

UPDATE 2.0:

So I tried Safai PC and I can not post on yahoo eiither.  This is a bigger issue than I thought.  Can anyone post on Yahoo Finance Blogs using Safari?  Mac or PC please try and leave feedback.

Are AT&T and Apple going to allow the IPhone to be teathered to a laptop and used as a modum anytime soon?
