iPhone, now with copy and paste powers.

Voice Control has limited capabilities, but is hitting about .900 for me, only missed one (I forgot how I entered my pharmacy's number, tried again, and it got it).

I love it, and it makes me want to call people when I'm driving :-)

It works... when the microphone can hear you! Why in the bloody hell can't I push the button on my bluetooth headset once and use the mic on the headset rather than the phone itself? Or even if I have to hold down the home button, why can't it see the paired headset and use the mic?

Also, in the car, I have a cassette adapter plugged in via the headphone jack. If I try to use voice control in the car, it is looking for audio input through the headphone jack and doesn't use the iPhone's mic.

WTF Apple? Bluetooth support for voice control... like yesterday.

Some people never stop wining!

Maybe because this has been standard on any SE or Nokia phone since the beginning of time?

I think thats one of the new features in 3.1

It's one of the features coming in 3.1

Hold your horses man, go easy on the developers and software engineers. A person can only code so much at a time......

I forgot that Apple only had one person coding this stuff, that would explain a lot to be honest

voice control is available in the blackberry since long..

but the difference is that iPhone has the integration of the control.

iphone is legendary , but still poor hardware( personal p.o view)

I love my iPhone, but it's really funny how unwaveringly Apple pretends that copy and paste as "some pretty incredible things". Perhaps irony? :)

Ok, the implementation is the nicest one I've seen yet on a mobile device, but still...

The implementation is nice, and combines well with the superior mobile browser.

I do think the hype is crazy though (RDF levels are high here)... it's frickin copy/paste!

"Ok, the implementation is the nicest one I've seen yet on a mobile device, but still..."

But that's the Apple philosophy - don't do anything for the sake of doing it. Always do it with an Apple slant.

There's no truth to the iPhone having poor hardware. It might not have everything other phones have. But why does it have to?

Don't forget - Apple also leads in certain features - First phone with real touchscreen capability. First mass-produced computers to adopt new storage formats (to wit, different disk sizes, serial I/O formats, etc.).

BTW, is copy and paste really that important on a phone?

Do other phones allow you to copy and paste an entire article on a web page so easily?

Pretty slick.

When Apple screws up they to a great job of it. Take Voice Control, all they had to do was to accept the "Voice Dial" command from the bluetooth headset and have it trigger "Voice Command". That's it, simple, no brainer, even a child can do it. Come on Apple FIX THIS NOW!!

It's in 3.1 man.... calm down. You'll have it by September I'm sure.

Wake me when you've got some new MacTablet rumors.
You haven't even caught up to the latest rumor of Steve Jobs possibly hosting an Apple August special event. Why hasn't 9to5 commented on this yet?

the ads were shown before tuesday

As others have stated, so many people are new to Apple devices and simply don't understand the design and idea's behind how Apple goes to market a product. They don't follow anyone, they lead with new technology and new ways of doing things. They didn't release copy/paste until it was worth doing and was useful beyond what was out on other devices. As someone said, not only does the iPhone have the best or one of the best internet experiences, the ability to copy/paste entire pages, graphics and all is now possible, not just text.

They don't follow traditional thinking (thank god) of simply mass producing some half ass'd plan to sell a product, they put out a unique and innovative product that people are willing to pay for. The software itself is why people are flocking tot he Macbook line of laptops, it's not because they are so different in hardware.

Think of this, do you ever see Apple trying to sell a computer on the hardware spec's? They don't even list the iPhone spec's, because that is not why 99% of the people are buying it, it's about the USER EXPERIENCE. When you understand how they goto market and why all the crying over "missing" features will go away.

Capital G!

So, in conclusion:

Apple is all about having the awesomest software for the best user experience possible, and this is why missing software features that users are accustomed to simply being there and 'just working' (like voice commands over Bluetooth) is understandable.

Did you say you have a "cassette" adapter? OMG, no effing way. You have an iPhone, and a car with a cassette player? Like, what gives? I'm guessing here, but, does the iPhone cost more than the car?

These ads really hurt to watch. As much as I'm impressed with the iPhone's implementation of these features, making ads showcasing features that even some dumbphones have had for years is kind of a bad move on Apple's part. I'm not sure why they didn't make an ad showcasing the video recording, editing, and uploading more fully, considering that will be the biggest feature for many people.

Also, am I the only one that didn't really "get" the first iPhone 3GS ad with the whole spy vibe to it? It seems that if you want people to buy the new product, even insinuating that it might be "the same" as the character in the ad says, is another pretty bad move.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 3GS, but the newest ads for it have been pretty lackluster. Keep showing off cool apps, Apple!

Good point, although I think they'll get to the video recording capabilities in their coming ads

Stero Bluetooth, they finally have it and it's buggy as he!!, music skips in and out. NO bluetooth automatic paring. These features are available in all of the more basic and cheaper phones.

No the iPhone was not the first to introduce a REAL touchscreen, HTC had don this WAYYYY before apple.

Yes the voice control thing is a problem too that they will fix, I mean you can try to pat them on the back for fixing it. But the truth is for a $600 "state of the art" supposidly SOO INNOVATIVE phone it should already be there. It lacks basic features. Every other $600 phone has it, heck $80 phones have it. Darn Cricket phones have stero bluetooth and copy/paste. I'd expect my $600 phone to have everything a $100 phone has and then more. Leaving out BASIC features is unacceptable.

Apple is so backwards, buying aplle is like buy a Mercedise with no cruise control or radio. Then the dealership says oh come back in 8 months and we'll put in the cruise control and radio. but the radio does not have a cd player, and they tell you you have to wait 3 more months for the radio with the CD player. LMAO

And some of you think that is ok, WTF???????

BTW, I will never "BUY" an iPhone, the one I own now is from someone who hated it and wanted to throw it away.

Chris....

Blah Blah Blah....

Number one smartphone in the world so blow it out your arse....

People who keep comparing some of the weaknesses of the iPHone to strengths of other phones are being small and subjective.

Any operating system has superior strengths in some ways and weaknesses in others. The iPhone has an incredible OS, more than 30,000 applications available, and a list of features in one machine that are superior to the list of features in most other machines.

Often in programming, a strength in one area might cause a weakness in other areas.... for example, great graphics = slower speed. The iPhone is not exempt. I guarantee you that if Apple could have packed all of the features (like voice command, or copy/paste) into the original release, they would have.

To think there is some conspiracy behind what Apple does in its build cycles is ridiculous.

Just take a step back from your shortsighted rant, and look at what Apple has done to the move the handheld market forward.
If you hate the iPHone so much, go back to your dingleberry and quit whining.

Me, an Apple Mac OS Engineer for four years.

Anyone else prefer the soundtrack on previous ads?

Video recording plz.

The one thing I hadn't thought about with cut/copy/paste and was planning to start using (and showing off with), is copying maps. When I do a Google search in iPhone OS 3.0, I do not get a small Google map with the drop pin, like they show on this commercial.

Even doing the same search "Park Hyatt Chicago" does not yield the map shown... I looked for anything that might be turned off in Settings > Safari and found nothing?

Am I missing something? Any suggestions?

I don't think you are missing anything. Keep in mind that you are seeing this in an ad. Images are usually beautified to make the spot more attractive. While the images are representations of the style shown on the iPhone screen they most likely have more details and animations for the sake of visual appeal of the spot. Also, the phone's screen is much lower resolution that the broadcast standard so all menus were re-created at the post production facility to get better quality.

This happens to all products in all ads. Just think, talking about phones, how the Blackberry Storm was shown in the ads to have smooth transitions and animations, which in practice are not quite.

actually, when you google a business like a hotel, the very first entry in the search results is from the google based reviews before the regular search result listing. and it's formatted differently
clicking on that link will bring up the business listing, the map (with pin), address, phone number and reviews...

and re: your phone is right...i was involved in an iPhone commercial shoot
and they shoot (and subsequently air) what is actually on a functioning iPhone.
