Hidden Feature Makes iPodtouch and iPhone Physical Storage Limitations (a bit) ObsoleteTue, 09/11/2007 - 03:13 — Seth Weintraub
Yep. Links to Quicktime movies. Full 480x320. Full stereo sound and amazing video clarity. They also start up right away and play fully without having to catch up if you are on relatively speedy Wifi enabled Internet connection. So what is stopping us from taking our incredibly diverse .mp4 movie collection and putting it on the web? Not much really. Just point your Web Server directory to the folder that has your media files. No index.html page necessary - just enable directory listing on the webserver and allow the web browser to open the mp4 files. Now we have an iPod with 2TB of storage. Technically, this can be done with music files and audiobooks as well. Anything that is read by Quicktime/iTunes should be compatible. Perhaps Apple should run with this on a Airport Extreme update? This functionality would be really easy to build in and make simple for the masses. As long as we are near some Wifi - which isn't that infrequent! Now Bring on the 3G iPhones!

Can you comment on whether
Can you comment on whether iPod touch has a built-in microphone?
If YES, it would indicate Apple's intention of deploying VOIP services in future.
Orb
I'd like to also point out that there is a piece of software out there that does all this for you. Unfortunately the "server side" software only runs on a windows PC, but you can access content from web browser. It's called Orb and it's completely free. www.orb.com

The apple.com/trailers/iphone tip does work on the iPhone.
Has anybody confirmed if
Has anybody confirmed if this works? IF so that 4Gb iPhone for $299 is looking Mighty Nice!!!

there is no reason why it shouldn't work. I am surprised this hasn't been covered more!

I seem to be missing something here. When i view the site in iPhoney (on a macbook pro) I can click on the movie titles and it takes me to a description page but i see no way to actually view the trailer :(

Seriously/Frankly NYC needs to catch up to the rest of the world and put 3/$G in the subways.
Step by step?
Anyone care to baby-step a novice through this process?

DOT.TUNES

Dot Tunes
Beware! This program looks promising but still has tons of issues. Read their support boards. They aren't even taking any new members on their boards 'because of spamming', but it's actually because the software is still so buggy. $30 I'll never see again...
I've been using DOT.TUNES to
I've been using DOT.TUNES to stream my iTunes tracks to my iPhone - no bugs as yet. What kinds of bugs would cause you to be as dramatic as writing 'Beware when it seems to run fine? Let me know and I'll test and report my findings
whattt
dude, this is such a plus.. i mean, if you watch alot of movies and dont want to take up ALL your space, then this will work... what about music files through the internet on safari? will that work?

Hmm, the page you’re looking for can’t be found.
yes the plug ins are engaged. any suggestions??
make sure you are browsing
make sure you are browsing as iPhone and not webkit
Try Driver27.com
driver27.com has its auto racing pages and video configured for direct playback on the iPhone via wireless. Try it. Pretty amazing.
Tried it.
Safari can't open a webpage this size.
Sorry, the acutall error message is:
Safari can't open the page because it is too large.
Is this really news? This
Is this really news? This is the first thing I tried when I got my iPhone, and of course it works. My issue with the iPod Touch is, why should I have to pay for 2 TB of web hosting somewhere, and only watch movies where I get Wi-Fi?
FYI, the best free solution out there for those that are interested is Glide OS...2 GB of storage for free, plus it'll transcode your media files to be be iPhone/iPod compatible.
Sorry...
When I embedded the m4v file in a page, it worked. I wonder if I did something wrong. I was just having the phone read from my directory and it didn't work that way. Hmmm... I wonder if what I did wrong. Great tip, though.
I just tried this, and it
I just tried this, and it worked, but the videos didn't play full screen. Most of them had black bars on the top and bottom, which took up a good deal of screen space. You can zoom in to the video to make it full screen, but it cuts off a lot of the video to the left and to the right, and the image looks choppy.
Very old news
This was covered on Macrumors prior to iPhone ship. Note this entry is from 2PM on 6/29. If I recall correctly there was an earlier note about this as well, possibly on another site:
http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2007/06/29/iphone-movie-trailers-live-free-of-die-hard/
yeah known. The idea is
yeah known. The idea is that you can create a webshare for your iPod touch which overcomes the 16gb limit.
Almost true...
okay... This almost works. But you get a message that says the file is too large for Safari to open or something to that regard. But... Just make an HTML file for each video with the line:
<embed src="filename.mp4" width="x" height="y">
Where x is the width of the video and y is the height (in pixels).
Interestingly enough, this let's you rotate the screen to view the video in either orientation, which is not allowed in iPod mode.
Also, check your AT&T agreement. It says video streaming over EDGE is subject to additional charges. And I would put a password on this joker so the MPAA doesn't sue your ass when your website becomes it's own digital distribution service.
Want unlimited space and transfer? There are tons of places online to get that for about $50 a year!

FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE NEW
Movies are streamable by using Telekinesis (google it)
1. Download Telekinesis
2. Install Telekinesis on your mac
3. Set your password
4. Make sure the APP is running
5. Go to IPCHICKEN.COM to get your IP ADDRESS
6. Type the IP ADDRESS + the number given to you on the Telekinesis website into your iPHONE Safari browser
7. Type in your username and password to log in from your iPHONE (or a computer running safari)
You are in, now you just need to find your movies and click them to watch them.
The movies must be in the correct format.
1. iTunes Movies will stream - nothing extra to do
2. Handbrake movies
a. Open Handbrake
b. Insert Disc, select source, choose the DVD you just inserted
c. go to preferences and choose "Use iPod/iTunes friendly (.m4v) file extension for MP4 output file" then click okay (not necessary, but I do it to be safe and to keep my movies organized)
d. click the iPOD format, go to Codecs and select MPEG-4 Video/AAC Audio
e. change the Average bitrate (kbps) to 1000 (I do it to cut down on size)
f. click Start (30 minutes later you have a streamable movie)
Drop the movie in your iTUNES catalog if you are like me and like your stuff stored together and like the guy above said, you could theoretically have an iPhone with unlimited storage.
Telekinesis also works great with the music, pdf files, word or excel documents (viewing only), and you can even access your built in camera or iSight camera from your hosting computer.
If I've left out a step or posted something incorrectly please feel free to chime in.
I think this is what people
I think this is what people concerned about storage size of an iphone or ipod touch aren't realizing. You only need enough storage space to get you to your next hotspot, then you download more content.
What I would like to know is: can I download files I keep on my Western Digital World Book HDD? It is connected to my home network and because it acts as a server I can download content from it into any computer connected to the internet. What I don't know is if I can do this with an iphone or ipod touch.
If I can do this, my entire music, video, photo collection becomes available to me whenever I hit a hot spot and the (iphone or ipod touch) has enough storage space to get me to the next download.
Well I tried this. I used
Well I tried this. I used Quicktime to export a movie I had originally did on Handbrake.
So in QT I exported. I selected iPhone. Default settings. I uploaded to my webhost site.
The movie plays fine through my WiFi network. WHen I try to play a movie through AT&T Edge, I get a error message.
I assumed because youtube works and streams through Edge, shouldn't my movies too?
Is there a different export I should choose in QT? I didn't see a specific setting for video codec H.264.
Or I guess Edge doesn't allow movie streaming if not youtube?
