We made a quick little Automator application that removes the Time Machine restrictions on what kind of disk you can back up to. We found the tip here.
We are now happily backing up or Leopard machines to the SMB Share on or DLink DNS-323.
Download the Flux Capacitor here. It is an automator action so you'll see the unix command that it runs. After you are done, Voila! You'll see ALL of your shares in Time machine - even wireless.
Obviously Apple closed this functionality for a reason so use at your own risk.

Try kicking out the cable
Try kicking out the cable during Time Machine's active period. Maybe you'll find out. Given that up till mid-Oct. it was in the Beta and they were advertising the feature there is likely a defect that'll cause a data loss under some circumstances that they hadn't been able to figure out or fix completely by release.
I think apple closed it, so
I think apple closed it, so you would be able to do it. But they wouldn't be bothered when something went wrong...
And it gives them a little more time, to iron out all bugs....
Have you tried doing
Have you tried doing restores yet?
Can you browse the TM
Can you browse the TM backups in the actual interface? I was only able to backup using TM to a sparse image to my AEBS, and it couldn't read the subsequent backup.
I haven't tried the patch yet, i just wanted to know before i installed it.
Yes, you can easily browse
Yes, you can easily browse the sparsebundle with the TM interface. Right-click (or control-click) TM in your Dock, and then select "Browse Other Time Machine disks...." and select the mounted sparsebundle, which will be named "Backup of <i>machinename</i>". (Note that you must mount the sparsebundle first -- just double-click on it.
It recognizes but won't
It recognizes but won't allow selection of my server directory mounted as a volume. I've tried it on 3 different volumes (directories) where I have full privileges.

I'm just disappointed you
I'm just disappointed you didn't release this just a couple days sooner. November 5th, to be exact. After all, that would have been 52 years to the day since the original flux capacitor was conceived. *Sigh*

oooooh, i wouldn't go near
oooooh, i wouldn't go near this 'fix' AT ALL.
Why? because Time Machine is doing some filesystem-level stuff to take snapshots, etc....stuff that AFS doesn't *necessarily* have to implement.
So in using this 'fix', you're assuming that an Airport Extreme Basestation implements every single feature of AFS in vending an "Airport Disk".
More power to ya. But remember, Time Machine is supposed to be a reliable, rock-solid *FALL BACK*.
So why would you play fast and loose with some 'quick fix'?
Instead, just unplug that disk from your AEB and move it to a Mac and share it via AFS and leave that mac running all the time.
Is there any way to keep it
Is there any way to keep it from creating a sparsebundle when backing up over Airport? It seems like it slows down the backup process.
Didnt work for me. The disk
Didnt work for me. The disk showed up, but I am getting "cannot write to disk image" when trying to back up.
make sure you have write
make sure you have write permissions on that disk share.

This is very dangerous. It
This is very dangerous. It works fine, but when TM needs to delete old backups it fails to reclaim the space, and so it deletes ALL the backups. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5918065#5918065.
Stay away from this until it's fixed.
I have a question. I
I have a question. I installed everything and i can connect to the disk. When I try and write a file to the disk it says i don't have privladges to and that some parts of the file could not be read or written. I am using the smb server setting but do i need to configure the ftp server?
Help would greatly appriciated!
Thanks
The way I understand it,
The way I understand it, normally when you copy data the device you're copying to acknowledges that it has written the data correctly. With Airport disk sharing, the Airport can sometimes send a false acknowledgement saying the data has been written, when in fact it has only been received and stored in the Airport's memory. So if the power or connection is interrupted for whatever reason, you may think everything is working fine. Then when you try to restore something you find you have corrupted data.
So backing up basically
So backing up basically works. But has anyone actually tried to recover from such a network-backup? I don't know how to boot and install from a nfs/smb/afs share. Is that possible?
Also note that if for any
Also note that if for any reason the backup volume is not cleanly unmounted, you might loose all backups.
Since there is no tool to repair a sparsebundle image, this puts all your backups at jepardy once an hour.

Hi,
I executed the script. I see my shared SMB folder. But I get error message that TM cannot write backup disk images (I have full privileges) I just want to restore TM in with its default. Can anyone tell me how?
