Tim Cook is a top candidate for GM's next CEO position?!

That's the story that Silicon Alley Insider is running based on this singular tip:

I saw your recent post on Tim Cook at Apple.  I don't know if he has been contacted yet but he is the top candidate that Spencer Stuart has identified as the next CEO of GM.  I have an inside source at Spencer Stuart.

[Interim CEO Edward E. Whitacre] wants the candidate to come from a company known for operational excellence, innovation and customer satisfaction and in addition he is looking for someone that has turnaround experience. It also doesn't hurt that [Tim] has been able to work with Jobs. Whitacre does want to stay on as Chairman.  Also, Cook has been the key link to AT&T and should understand the culture that Whitacre,  [a former AT&T CEO] built.

Even if Cook was chosen, would he leave Apple to run GM?  Would Apple let him go without a fight?  Seems very unlikely.

" Seems very unlikely."

-especially since Apple is worth 50 times what GM is worth and the guy in front of him at Apple is working on his second liver.

Cook is patient enough to wait and smart enough to know his best long term gig is at Apple.

This will definitely never happen. Tim is Steve's #2 and has been for over a decade. He's a loyal guy and clearly loves Apple. This is a non-story.

If this is true, it tells you a lot about the integrity of the retained search firm.  Though SpencerStuart has a reputation of being snakes, I do not think they would be stupid enough to leak this.

Other points to consider:

GM is not a consumer electronics company that churns out cool products with non removable batteries, designed to be tossed away in three years.  Sure, GM has it's problems, but Apple holds people over a barrel with the way they operate.  If those types of philosophies were used at GM, it would fail for sure.

Apple used to have a slogan : "Think Different", now it should be "I wanna be just like you".

Maybe the question isn't "Would Apple let him go without a fight?" but "Would Apple send him there on a mission?" Many people have said that Jobs should re-invent the auto-industry. Putting his stand-in at GM could lay the foundation for a mutually beneficial partnership between Apple and GM.

I would hate to see Apple loose Tim. He's a terrific leader and would be awesome as Steve's replacement at some point in the future.

If Tim Cook left for GM, would that mean they'd finally part ways with Howie Long?

Sounds like Hedge Funds trying to scare investors out of their shares before Apple announces blow out numbers later in Jan.

You would have to be insane to work at GM.....any position!

Jobs would say to him "Do you want to make go-carts all your life, or do you want to change the world?"

And have they ever changed the world at Apple.   Not only in by creating and redefining industries but by redefining and raising the bar for what is "quality" for every kind of human organization.   GM is the new Chrysler - a former blue chip company essentially run into the ground by huge fixed costs and a culture of "good enough to get by".   There is a lot more that Apple can change in the world and I hope and suspect that Tim Cook wants to be a big part of that.

You know nothing about the car business except what you read in USA Today.

GM is a solid company with great potential.   Its failure was its perception that its only notable competitors were the two other American car companies.... implicitly carving up a market that didn't exist in a vacuum.

If GM finds a way to introduce innovation at the senior management level, it can return to its former glory.

before he leaves for gm,  please send him over to homeland security and have him stop at the fed on the way.  the usa gov't is devoid of any talent that has lifted a shovel and know what it's like to work for a living.  there are a very few exceptions but their hands are tied.

What are you currently doing that's so important?  Get your opinionated ass to D.C. and DO something instead of being an asshole, armchair American.

Amen!

GM will produce "Cloud Cars" to go with their "Cloud Profits" 'cuz it's all up in the air over at Government Motors!  Cook will never go, who wants to be told by an Obama rep what is able to make as a maximum!  We got Jimmy Carter stupid running the White House and now GM!  I wouldn't touch that company with a 100 foot pole!

I want to ask Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs & Ford ads) if he'll help me with the dirty job of fixing the American P.O.S. car/truck when it falls apart.  Speaking of clouds, get your head out of the flatus cloud.

People leave Detroit in general.  People especially do not move from Cupertino to Detroit.  Besides GM is under massive compensation restrictions from the Pay Czar.

After the tablet introduction, Jobs will resign as CEO and serve as Chairman.  Cook will become CEO.

Here come the iHummers and Apple Che Vee's :)

this makes no sense.  Typically CEO picks his or her CFO.   Since GM already got a new  CFO from MSFT, it seems to me that the current CEO, Mr. Whitcare would pass the CEO job to the new CFO when he is ready in a year or two.     No way Tim Cook would go to GM.  Tim is in line for CEO at Apple in a few years.  Someone was trying to manipulate Apple stock before the year end.  SEC should investigate SAI!

HA HA HA. That is hilarious. Of course GM wants Tim Cook. However, GM needs more than an amazingly sharp financial guru. They need someone with more vision, and design sensibility. I'm not saying Tim Cook is lacking in these departments, but GM is in such a hopeless situation that even Jobs will have a helluva time turning such a company around.

GM (almost?) killed Saab and thus earned my everlasting hate and anger... it would be sad to see a guy like Cook leave for that bunch of idiots.

This is great! When you're done, check out this company - they are looking for iHummers and Apple Che Vee's!
