I hope Apple's revolutionary tablet thing won't be as predictable as this. Remember the iphone mockups? yes, the ipod nanos with keyboards or whatever
I too hope that the tablet/thingy turns out to have a revolutionary and unexpected design.
I remember the iphone mockups as well. They were mostly ipod classics with keyboards.
Hopefully, just like they did with the final iphone design, the tablet turns out to be something unique....until the copycats come a knocking of course.
It will have the ability to be used as a Modbook, but a built in sliding hinge, it turns it into a dual screen landscape mode. So that 8.9 screen , just turned into a larger than 15inch screen. Cool! Touch screen, so you slide info from one side to the other. Use your wireless pen to do your drawings and letters. Mouse and keyboard (wireless) from your desktop you could use. Webcam, and 5meg camera so you can take pictures on the go and see full screen, and do the same for the movies to. For those who want a full size keyboard, it has that built in when in use in dual landscape mode, just flip it out from the back and the pop out will stand it up to set on the desk.
If not a built-in / fold-up keyboard, at least a detachable keyboard out of the box. Video adapters, etc. as well
I like this mock-up, the screen design of iChat is nice and somewhat realistic. My only problem is that it is a landscape device as compared to the iPhone and iPod touch's protrait layout.
I'm working on a physical mock-up/"prototype" of the device (at least in its size and shape) and frankly, holding the thing landscape is FAR less comfortable and realistic for typing as it is portrait-style.
If you have input/advice on my physical mock-up hop over here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=754080)
Also, follow me @LukeBornheimer for updates on the "prototype".
Luke
well the front of the tablet looks quite similar on all the mockups i have seen so far. But the dropshadow in this one is just HORRIBLE!
the question is how you can type on it and in the same time showing your face on the camera :)
1) I don't really know why you'd need to have a text-based iChat going with someone you're looking at.
and
2) As I said before, the tablet will be made to be held portrait-style, not landscape. Hence the camera will be on the top of the tablet (held portrait-style) and you will be able to type (comfortably) with an iPhone style keyboard and using two thumbs (just like an iPhone).
I don't know why everyone assumes the "tablet" will be orientated towards a landscape preference. The keyboard just doesn't work/isn't comfortable that way. You'd drop the device.
Follow me @LukeBornheimer to see what my physical "prototype" looks like when I finish with it/them
I definitely agree with that. Considering this thing is going to have dimensions that are about twice the length/width of the iPhone, the only locigal way to type on it would be in portrait orientation with two thumbs, just like on the iPhone. The keyboard would probably be just a bit wider than the landscape keyboard on the iPhone.
Unless there's some sort of innovation nobody has thought of yet, I can't see how typing normally with all 10 fingers would work considering the screen is flat and the user wouldn't be able to see the screen while typing.
It won't be anything like this. It will have some kind of handle, a more defined bezel...
On the back, a prop arm...
no offense but i'm starting to get irked by a virtual keyboard especially the one on my iPhone. you can only press one key at a time and if you happen to slide your finger you end up pressing wrong keys. i wonder how someone can have their palm on the tablet for typing and still be an accurate typer. good luck apple.
I bet this thing will not have a little camera like the macbooks and macbook pro's. Everyone seems to have forgotten about the apple patent with little camera sensors in between the pixels. I bet this new product will have it!

Nacho,
Finally someone mentioned that! I have been telling people about that ever since it was first published... An AMAZING idea. True eye contact in video chat. No separate camera... It does what Apple is best at. Eliminating and/or combining parts.
I have a feeling though, that it is more complex than it seems and is one of those things where technology has to catch up to the design.
It will be landscape sometimes, and portrait other times, just like iPhone. This tablet is going to primarily be for watching movies (landscape), browsing the web (portrait), and communicating (either orientation). It's possible that it will also support some kind of Wacom stylus functionality, to make it ultra attractive to artists (Apple's long-time lover).
Will it run any Google Voice apps? I have totally lost interest in this device, if it ever arrives, as it will probably be tied to a one source for apps.
mockup number 1917! :D
This is not a "mock-up" at all. It's a black square with a white line around it that has random illogical screen elements pasted on top. Nothing about it makes any sense and to call it a "mock-up" does a great disservice to product designers everywhere.
While I know this mock up has a keyboard larger than the iPhone/iPod touch, it's still way small (even smaller than a cramped netbook keyboard). With the present touch devices, you are holding the device and can easily two-finger type. But with this mock up, it would be a stretch to type with both thumbs.
I agree with the earlier post that the landscape mode is tough. I think it would work OK in portrait mode, but it's still a stretch. But we'll have to see.
Here's the real question: For a "full" tablet, what do you all think are the possibilities of handwriting recognition? I'm sorry, but I'm still looking for an affordable, portable apple product that can read MY writing. And we all know that OS X has great handwriting recognition built in.
Regardless of the focus on touch-only devices, Apple is leaving out a huge potential market of enterprise customers who could use an awesome portable device that can be written on. If they really want to capture more of the enterprise market, they'll add pen-sensitive input. Even if the stylus is only an option, and does not "live" in a hole in the device, it just makes sense. Put a SIM card slot for data transfer, and it would be even better. Arm our employees with Wireless data transfer on the road, and the ability to truly manipulate the device (and in portrait mode like a real piece of paper), and it will be awesome. Give it the Apple finesse, with a great portable OS, and it will truly be the next breaktrough device.
Personally, I just don't see the value of a 10" iPhone/iPod touch. Only to see bigger movies? to see CD-size coverflow? I don't think so. The bottom line is that Apple has to successfully bridge the iPhone OS and the full Mac OS to really make a new device worthy.
Sound off!
I actually like this mock-up. Would love to get one ;)
If they could make it as thin as the display part of the MBP...
Maybe it will have a camera for each orientation - or the software will automatically turn the image from the camera when it is sideways.
Maybe it will have a slideout keyboard ;)
Apple said the keyboard on netbooks were comprimised and that they wouldnt offer such a thing. How can they sort this on a 10" tablet??? Double standards as its a "touch kb"?
i don't like the idea of being forced from apple to do certain things (like surfing, writing emails etc) only with their apps. such a tablet should be OSX, and nothing else. if they want it to have an iphone OS then I'm fine with a software to start. but this tablet does not make sense to me if i can not let run the programs i want (like photoshop, reasion etc)
Aha, but will Calendar have a "week" view? I'm definitely voting for Snow Leopard else I won't even be tempted. UMPCs have split keyboards for landscape typing, I'm betting on that for landscape.
PA Semi, had better be magicians, because the GUI had better scream.
I have really high hopes, but I will be easily disappointed and will be unforgiving on OS and speed.
I'm hoping for a September announcement and January release.
...the technology was there to make this one a reality.

I'd buy 10.
I think it will be portrait orientated..
but..
more of a thumb board, using 2 hands..
Everyone seems sure that it will be a tablet, could it not be just a 10" macbook?(no way they call it a net book) I have not really followed this subject that much, because I'm just not interested in a tablet. I like the idea of being able to close a macbook to protect the screen. I guess you could just buy a pouch or flip open case of some sort for the tablet, but seems like a waste to me.
Why are people so sure its a tablet, besides all the talk from various web sites is there any real evidence ?
Just asking.
Most mockups are showcasing a cool hardware design with a half hearted effort to create an eye catching OS screen shot. This guy made a mockup for the whole dang OS and showed it through videos:
http://www.youtube.com/thenewtouch
It looks like an altered version of the Mac OS, but optimized for Multi-Touch.
I just got home from an amazing run in the gorgeouks sunshine outside on a chillaxious Friday and I was once again reminded of how beautiful and easy our lives are.
We spend so much time complaining and bickering about basically non-existent problems and sometimes we forget how awesome it is to be here. Sure, tragedies do exist (check out the drunk driving thread for some sad examples), but generally life is easy. If those young adults who were killed by drunk drivers were able to speak from the grave, the first thing they'd say is that life is short, so enjoy it. They really are proof of how short it can be.
Some personal examples of my life being beautifufl:
-Just spend a week in Canmore helping paint my friend's million dollar home, while mountain biking, drinking, and getting free room and board. And I even got paid for it!
-Lost my wallet three times so far. Everytime it has been returned. One time I lost it in Edmonton with $70 cash inside, and when it was returned the cash was still in it! (minor miracle, especially in Edmonton!)
-Lost my passport in NZ while on a crazy adventurpe. Got my new passport in the mail the day before my flight back to Canada!
-The economy is finally starting to turn around. So far this week I've saved about $200 in travel expenses thanks to the rising Canadian dollar!
-Going to Spain in September for $116 thanks to cmyden and his amazinpg travel deal!
-And we can all agree that the Flames getting Bouwmeester for nothing is something we as a group can celebrate! md7ynn
I like "iBook" for this device!
As in: iPod, iPhone, iBook.
