El Jobso: Fix for iPhone connectivity problems en route: Affects 2%

Share

Our iPhones seem to work pretty well.  Sure there are a few zones around town where there is no data and it does tend to hang every now and again.  But, that is to be expected.  Overall it is as stable as any desktop OS out there and when it does crash it comes back pretty quick.  But maybe this isn't normal?

Apparently 2% of the iPhones out there got some bad software and need to get an upgrade.

According to a Macrumors forum member, Steve Jobs wrote:

We are working on some bugs which affect around 2% of the iPhones shipped, and hope to have a software update soon.

So, how do you know if you got some bad iPhone software?

Is this the baseband software only?  Wouldn't the 2.0.1 updater have fixed this - it did update the baseband?  Dunno?  Now paranoia sets in.  Are you in the 2%? Every time your connectivity doesn't work, you'll have to wonder...

Realistically, if all of this is true, there will likely be a fix  showing up in the next software update.  Just don't expect push notifications as well.

Mine only lasted 30 days! had to take it back to the shop for new one, now was it broke or was it software? hmmm i will never know now

All iphones run the same software... so I call bullshit.

Is this the same '2%' they said were affected by mobileme issues?

There are firmware on chips on the iPhone which can vary depending on when the chips were purchased. Firmware is technically software.

Hopefully this bug will be fixed? Does not build confidence....

I personally know about a dozen people who own iPhone 3G's and none of them are having these problems.

I only know of one person who had MobileMe issues so I'm giving Apple a break.

Not sure if it was before or after upgrading to 2.0.1, but I can't receive or send email (reliably) and address book and calendar definitely not syncing. So is it hardware, software, MobileMe or network (O2) to blame?

...and can anyone explain why Apple absolutely never, ever seem to acknowledge problems?

My iPhone 3G has worked pretty flawlessly; no real complaints about dropped calls or connectivity.

A friend's 3G reception was so bad that she's had to disable 3G to have a usable phone.  We're not quite in the same part of town, but she drives past my office on the way to work, and dropped calls the whole route from what I understand.  I've got my best signal on the street she drops on, so I'm willing to acknowledge that not al iPhones are created equally.  Her phone was two weeks newer and a different factory from mine, if I recall her serial number correctly...

On the other hand, mine is experiencing the cracked case problem in one area, and hers wasn't.

but a bit laggy especially using the cube transition in photos
