NASA confirms Windows virus reached outer spaceWed, 08/27/2008 - 06:37 — Andy Space
This virus, which affects Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP machines, was first detected on Earth in August last year before heading off on its unexpected journey into space. Gammima AG is widely used to steal log-in data for online games in the Far East, the BBC reports. And the virus was carried to the station on laptops infected by the virus. Gets better: "Nasa said it was not the first time computer viruses had travelled into space and it was investigating how the machines were infected." Probably because the machines on the Space Station are running an insecure operating system, known as Windows, we reckon. Space news website SpaceRef broke the story about the virus on the laptops that astronauts took to the ISS. Oh - and it's possible that some of us Earth-dwellers could have been infected by a computer virus sent from space: "The laptops infected with the virus were used to run nutritional programs and let the astronauts periodically send e-mail back to Earth," says the BBC. And the laptops used by astronauts don't have anti-virus software installed. Image illustrates an iPod on a space shuttle, by the way... Do you think Nasa should switch to Mac?

Hell yeah they should switch
Hell yeah they should switch to mac. Stupid Steve Balmer. He is an ugly son of a B***H.
They should definitly switch
They should definitly switch to a UNIX based system!
So, yeah lets take mac os x or ubuntu.
Stupid windows!!!
Not the first time...
Its not the first time a computer virus has hit space. After all, the aliens in Independence Day were taken down by a virus. They must have been using Windows as well
Oh, how I love OSX. I don't have to worry about such things!
Seriously though, what on earth (pun intended) were NASA thinking by using insecure Windoze laptops with no anti-virus software?
They were not
thinking at all which should be blindingly obvious from their choice of operating systems. "Me too" ism we see everywhere around us, not just at NASA or w/in the federal government & politics.
I know NASA had some budget
I know NASA had some budget cuts, but...
C'mon. WINDOWS IN SPACE?!?! This is supposed to be mission critical life or death and you USE WINDOWS?!?!?!
They got what they deserved. See, Business Majors making Computer Decisions! A BA or MBA is not a Comp Sci degree. Go stick the BA's and MBA's in finance where they belong.
"Now, I don't want to get off on a rant here, but..." - Dennis Miller
cmon
read it again, I hardly consider sending occasional emails back and forth something thats 'mission critical'...hell, even the nutrition info they used it for could easily be kept on paper...
They used to use Macs. God
They used to use Macs. God knows why they stopped

Yes, but bashing windows is allowed ....
Nasa looked into macs a few
Nasa looked into macs a few years ago but due to apples secrecy on future direction were deemed to much of a gamble, it doesnt always go their way.
Computer virus?
What gripes my ass is that they keep calling it a "computer" virus. It isn't a computer virus, it's a WINDOWS virus. It doesn't infect any other computer but ones with windows on it. People need to quit calling all these Windows viruses computer viruses. That makes it sounds like it can infect all computers. Fat chance of that. There is, at the current time, no known cross platform virus that can infect all computers.
microsoft
If Nasa is stupid enough to take windows machines, they deserve everything that happens.
NASA deserves what happens,
NASA deserves what happens, but the astronauts don't; it's not their fault that they're provided with Windows computers.
yeah i agree
macs suck, good thing they dont use them. Nothing would get done...
funny days
its funny that people bash windows without any understanding of how the OS is used on the space shuttle. i very much doubt mac could handles the applications and even if it could it would require countless man hours to re write the applications to even run properly in OSX. as for the "virus" there are even ones for mac however writers of virus like to target the masses to get more effect... so if windows is running on 80% of the desktops out there. mac on 10% who would you write a virus to infect and get mass effect?
Ignorant Mac users
NASA uses DOS for purpose-built and mission-critical hardware. The laptops are commercial technology so they use what the federal procurement rules tell them to use.
