You almost have to feel sorry for ol Sony. They make some of the world's best hardware, no doubt. The TZ Vaio for instance, and now this new phone look extremely cool and have the specs that you wish Apple would throw into their products. But their software is always a train wreck. We're not just talking about putting a rootkit on your computer - we're talking about the design interfaces being a nightmare. Now you can also add their Product Naming division to the mess.
Xperia - somewhere between "expire" and "XP-Diarrhea" is the name of their new phone, touted as an iPhone killer. It has impressive specs...
- 720x480 WVGA screen (nice!)
- GPS
- Very nice QWERTY keyboard slideout
- 3G HSDPA - 5 Band high upload speed built for next gen networks
- Windows Mobile 6...
CRASH! Yeah Sony is going away from market-leading Symbian OS and jumping on the Windows Mobile train for this puppy. The same Windows Mobile platform that is hemorrhaging market share to the iPhone. Ouch. Here's some advice, install Opera Mini and make it the default browser.
We aren't sure that 'iPhone Killer' is going to be added to the final list of nicknames of this device.

Yeah, apparently Botswanans have run out of Memory Sticks to rub together to make fire.
That is even uglier than I
That is even uglier than I would have guessed. Wintard mobile? Geez, some companies never learn.
Is it plastic? The only way this would be an iPhone killer is if it made the iPhone die laughing.
I wonder what kind of root kit it installs on your computer?
The sony ericsson profile
The sony ericsson profile says that the phone "redefines premiumness" Which would be a significant acievement if premiumness was an actual word with an actual definition. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/products/phoneportfolio/specif... is not a word
I think "Premiumness" is
I think "Premiumness" is like "Truthiness" which of course is, truth that comes from the gut rather than from pesky facts.
Hmmm.....is this pre-market
Hmmm.....is this pre-market fishing??? I see a lot of pictures...concept drawing images. I haven't seen a picture of a WORKING model yet. This could be many months away to a working , selling model. Or did I miss something?

If you learn to read you can actually read that the phone is smaller than the iphone.
Hey I know this is a Mac
Hey I know this is a Mac forum and you can't expect much more from it than Mac fanboys, but seriously. At least use your brain. This is far ahead of the iPhone, look at its specs and what it can do! The iPhone was never "innovative" aside from its flashy touch screen, but this actually does have something new and exiting. For all you people who keep laughing at the Windows Mobile OS, have you ever noticed that it doesn't use the WM interface? No, they made their own interface for it. So its not Windows. Its Xperia. Also, just one feature that I like, is the handwriting recognition. Does you fancy iPhone do that? No... It's just an iPhone. I can write on this and write and write, and it will turn it into ones and zeros for me. That's useful, unlike Apples overly flashy designs. Yeah I know I'll get crucified for this post, after all, its an iSheep's forum, but I wanted to have my say. And... btw... I never liked the design of Macs, iPods, iPhones, and all those ugly white curvy devices. They're too... flashy. Like I'm trying to compensate for something...
Aw, bless!
Aw, bless!
Good thing you did not
Good thing you did not confuse a Forum and the comment section...
That would have been embarrassing if you rambled on and on with out realizing this is NOT A FORUM! its just comments.
But please tell me did you have some hands-on time to test this lovely handwriting function of yours? Some how that reminds me of some apple product from the 90s. Don't know what it was called I think something like norton or so....
And how does the fact that they made their own interface change the fact that it uses a buggy, lagging, version of an OS - that's what I call flashy!
I'm not offended by your
I'm not offended by your comments, I just now became a Mac fan for many reasons that I can talk about all day. Windows makes a good product and so does everyone else. Everyone can go back and forth all day about who has the best product but numbers in sales don't lie. The iPhone has not only created competition as a means for other companies to increase their bottom line they have also recreated technology. All these companies that has decided to compete with the best phone out right now had to hire more people. Mac has even helped people get jobs. Listen, I think all the new phones that has been released are nice the iPhone is just better right now. Will someone beat it maybe, has it been done NO. Mac fans get touchy when windows geeks throw a jab and the same for Mac. As for me I go with what works, looks good, affordable, gets the job done, efficient, less viruses, thin phone, looks good, easy to use, eye catcher, chick magnet, sales like hell, the first to do it, oh well I LIKE MACS.

If someone has to proclaim
If someone has to proclaim something as an "iPhone killer," they already lost the war. I'm referring to all the iPod killers out there.
Speaking of which, how's that Dell DJ of yours "Me"
And a keyboard? So funny...
Who's gonna use those in 3 years?
Who's gonna use a keyboard
Who's gonna use a keyboard in 3 years?
Pretty much everyone.
Yes, it's straight out of
Yes, it's straight out of Nehandertal with a facelift, but Apple has to be quick in spreading "the real thing" to other countries and markets. The average "consumer cow" doesn't really understand the real difference between this and an iPhone; you see a demo, a big touch screen, maybe a movie or some pictures and they could think it's the same. One miserable user of Windows Mob'l and one sale lost for Apple (unless that user goes to the grey market like probably the one million missing iPhones)
Er... I'm a Mac guy but you
Er... I'm a Mac guy but you guys have only seen this thing on a picture/video and you already "know" all aboput it? Sometimes I just want to hide the fact that I'm a Mac user both because of the ignorant fan boys *and* the ignorant anti-fan boys (who sometimes are even worse). To me the interface is what makes me wonder about and get interested in a device.
About the iPhone not being good and iSheep. To me there is one signifcant thing missing in most of todays gadgets (and computers, for that matter): a good, well though out and laid out interface. My old K750 does alot of things too, only much of it all is hidden under menus making me not care one dime about the "versatility". Many "fancy" non-Apple interfaces of today seem pretty superficial; it's ony the first layer that looks nice. When one digs deeper, goes on to settings (which matters a whole lot if you want to try something that's a bit more technical) it the same old GUI:s...
The iPhone might not be the be all end all phone when it comes to pure feature comparisons. But todays gadgets, regardless of feature, aren't better than the interface/GUI they're using. If there's one thing Apple have proven to understand it's the importance of a quick and rewarding GUI on mobile gadgets. I have all respect for other companies, and yes, under the hood of the gadgets those companies produce there might be whole lot of stuff that the iPhone hasn't got. But if it's hidden in a nestled pop-up menu (that I'm supposed to "easily" be able to access while on the move) then I'll probably just throw the thing into a wall in frustration.
They spend oodles of money on hardware featers when they really need to focus more on interface features, if they want to be able to tap into what many thinks is so attractive with the iPhone. They're still running around in circles trying a bit of shade here and a different color there but not much else.
The reason I disliked Windows Mobile so much was because of its interface. Somehow some developers seem to think that if you have a stulys it's ok to put small 4-10 pixel wide buttons all over the place. Oh, and a couple of nestled pop-up menues. Nestled menus, they way they work in at least winmobile 5/6, might have a function on a desktop/laptop etc where you have desktop space and not really noticing the fraction of a seconds one that sometimes occur. On a mobile device all those thing becomes quite clear and frustrating. Shoe-horning a desktop interface into a mobile gadget thinking it's the best way to go is wrong on so many levels. Defect by design, IMHO.
Interface design is what I love about Apple. Expose sounds gimmicky for someone who haven't used it but when they try it they reaslize they don't want to live without it and the story goes on...

Doesn't look too bad, but it
Doesn't look too bad, but it is always the software that's the issue. And I've seen minimal front end GUI's bolted onto Windows Mobile before and it's just not the same as the integrated touch interface on the iPhone.
Have to wait and see what the Xperia is really like, but I expect we'll have 1 or maybe 2 layers of the 'panels' until you're tossed back into the hell that is Windows Mobile.
Can't wait for the 3G iPhone that will actually work as a phone in Japan....

I have to agree with a few
I have to agree with a few on here - Sometimes being a Mac fan is embarrassing. The spec on this thing kills the iPhone. Look at it! Put your moronic brains into gear and you will see how much better it is in terms of performance. I travel a lot in my work - This thing would work anywhere I go. I have an iPhone and I love it, but really I love the interface. Let's be honest with ourselves here - The hardware aspect of it is utterly hopeless. GPS? No. 3G? Not yet. Camera? 2MP. Video? No. Can I use my phone in Japan? No - I have to have another handset for that. How much RAM? 16GB! A slot for a memory card? Uh, no - Not that either. Oh, and it's tied to an individual network in each country and costs a lot more than the competition.
It's just full of stuff that doesn't even match up to cheaper stuff on the market in terms of raw performance. What it does have is that beautiful, easy to use OS that just makes other interfaces look like a Commodore 64 in comparison. It's driving design of phones forward and everyone will benefit. Then there's that amazing form factor - It's just beautiful to touch and to feel.
If that is what you like about it, then it's OK to admit it, but don't make a twat of yourself going on about how this SE thing is bad because it's not an iPhone. SE Would never call it an iPhone killer - That's others doing that. If you're 14 years old, still living with your parents and have nothing to to but play video games and homework all day then perhaps the iPhone is perfect for you. For me, I need more - I need a reliable and permanent, fast web connection - That is NOT Edge.
The worst thing about this new SE unit is that it features Windows Mobile - That would stop me using it, but the engineering behind the hardware is amazing. It's got a slide out, real keyboard too - Not the little virtual one that iPhone has.
People, you have GOT to get out of this thing that if Apple curls one out and tells you that it's the most amazing thing you ever saw, it is true. If you're a TRUE Apple fan, then you'll look at the stuff for it's merits, not for it's badge.
You make some valid points,
You make some valid points, but you forget one thing it runs Windows and there is no mention how this phone would interface with your computer, music, email and such. I live in the USA and ATT has great service where I live. I do not care if my iPhone has 3G since it is only available in certain areas. I get my mail and web surf anywhere and when wi-fi is available (almost everywhere) my iphone hits overdrive.
Apple purposely left some things out- some to save battery life, while others because they weren't quite ready for prime time. Each software update improves iPhone and you can be certain there is a new version with most of what you want in the works. For its first branded phone, Apple hit a home run. With its nearly bullet proof touch screen, it is incredibly reliable and the fun to use. To the person talking about handwriting recognition, give it up! Don't you have to carry a stylus to use that? What about when you lose it? Then what do you do?
Because iPhone interfaces direct with the computer, you can easily download all your photos- no need for a memory card slot is there? FM radio? Who cares? Video camera would be nice and a little light for taking photos. Other than that, iPhone is an absolute joy to use. I don't want a slide-out keyboard with tiny keys. It is just one more thing to break. I bought my iPhone the first day because I need simple to use email, web browser, phone and iPod all in one.
If this Xperia phone tickles your fancy then buy it. My iPhone is still better than anything I have seen and it is a solid machine running OSX.
Every video features at
Every video features at least two or three times this "fancy" stacks-like effect. What is it good for?
And yes, most of the modern mobiles have much greater specs than the iPhone, but I would never want to trade mine in for e.g. a N95.
Frankly, calling anything an
Frankly, calling anything an X killer is getting tiresome. I don't know whether this thing is bad or good, but I do know there is no point in evaluating things like this on pre-release specs. By the time this is released, both this and the iPhone will be very different beasts than they are now. But no matter how good this Sony may or may not be, it won't wipe the iPhone out of existence. Therefore it will never be an iPhone "killer", it will be iPhone "competition"
