Sony's new high end netbook is called P for "Pocket"
Sony's slowly pulling the curtains back on their new laptop. What we've gathered so far is pretty interesting. On the one hand it has a 1600x768 resolution on an 8 inch diagonal display. Apple has a difficult time putting 1600 pixels on a 17 inch diagonal display. We'll wait until we see it, but have a feeling there will be some squinting involved.
Also, it will be running Vista on a 1.33Ghz (probably Atom) processor. Have fun with that...
Likely, this thing will not be taking any MacBook Air marketshare.

1600x768 pixel resolution on a 8" screen? You better have 20/20 vision! That's insane.

Bullshit !

(bottom of the page)
Actual 17" Macbook Pro are Full HD (16/10 tho, so not 1920x1080 but 1920x1200)
Full HD screen was an Built to order Option on earlier iteration that's all
Seriously dude check your facts !!!
yeah, we know - it was hard for Apple to get there. That was the point. 1680 is the normal 17, 1920 is HD.
it is surprising that sony is putting 1600 pixels on an 8 inch display
It was hard, so the "Apple HAD a hard Time" NOT "Apple HAS a hard Time"
....
You can even say "Apple Used to have" as It no longer have any problems with It
(probably a question of avalaibility and price more than a technical dificulty)
Not necessarily, the HP Mini-Note 2133 comes with Vista, Linux, and XP
Hey Apple Fanboy, this is supposed to compete with netbooks, not the MacBook Air.
If that is the case, then it would run XP or Linux
like, 220+ dpi? isn't iPhone's just 160?
btw, price starts at $NotaNumber... whoa
Ux already has 1024x600 on 4.5 screen
1392x2420 is mainstream already!
1590x4000 is great!
3412x4320 is the future! Why bother?
14800x45001 is impossible, So let´s go for it!
84000x48000 is what dreams are made of... so why not... go for it!???
92000x68000 ...the universe collapses!!!
wow to see that you need 20/10 vision (better than 20/20 vision) That means you see something 20 feet away as well as the average person sees something 10 feet away.
Where did you get those standards from? They are utterly ridiculous. Just think about the aspect ratio!
I have yet to buy an Apple computer. Love the iphone though. I have waited and waited for them to put WUXGA in their MacBook Pro 15". I definitely do not want a monstrous 17" MacBook Pro. I was thrilled to find out they put dual-link in the 13" MacBook yet concerned it may not be a compatible dual-link as it's a mini-displayport to dual-link DVI adapter.
There have been plenty of small computers with 150 to 250ppi, unfortunately Apple set the ideal ppi at 100. Hence the monster 30" 2560x1600. I bought one and used it for an hour before turning it off to resell on ebay. I prefer higher ppi than 100.
IBM T221 22" 3840x2400
Sony U101 7" XGA
OQO 02 5" 1280x700 (interpolated yet viewable)
Toshiba U105 7" WXGA
IBM has a 15" QXGA 2048x1536
I have or have had some of the above which I find them to be great and the higher the resolution the better.
As for 1024x600, never have liked that resolution, XGA is minimum for a "netbook" or whatever they call it.
However, I will give credit for Apple being pretty much the only notebook manufacturer dedicated to dual-link dvi and I finally got my mini-displayport to dual-link dvi adapter after waiting 2 months for it to see if it'll run Big Bertha. I do wish they'd get away from the 100ppi is ideal notion.
Oh and let me also point out that not being able to read text on super high resolution is due to the software operating systems, not the high resolution of the screen. One day Mac OS or Windows will create an OS allowing for PPI resolutions that will make what we use today look quite primitive.
Oh and the reason I don't like the Apple 30" inch is due to head movement...it required me to be so far away from the screen that it just didn't seem productive. Granted IBM T221s require you to be too close to the screen, yet that's a problem with the OS and not the screen itself. I'm quite impressed with what they have been able to do with the iphone to make test readable at various zoom levels. Anyway, my point is I plan to see if an Apple 13.3" Macbook will power up a T221-DG5 through the mini-display port. Sony does have a 13.1 notebook with 1600x900 resolution...it's not so far out there for Apple to put such a screen in their notebooks or have it as an option. You can always lower your resolution if you didn't like it. However, Apple will not do that because they have adopted the 100ppi is ideal notion. A false one that they will eventually have to give up as other manufacturers continue to adopt higher resolutions as the public slowly but surely learns how to adapt.
BTW, for what its worth...WUXGA (1920x1200) is in a 7" screen factor, it's just a matter of time for people to consider the benefits.
If they put the Intel U7700 processor at1.33Ghz 2M L2 cache, 533Mhz, FSB 65nm then I'll buy one regardless of price, but if they put that cheap $40 1.33Ghz Atom Z520 processor in it then the thing is useless.
I wonder if SonyStyle just made a typo, because 1600x768 is a strange ratio. It could be just WXGA, which would be a big improvement in the netbook world of 1024x600. 2:1 ratio...Kinda reminds me of my old C1 Sony picturebooks which would do that resolution in span mode.
Other weird thing is P "it fits in a pocket". Yeh, right! Netbooks aren't pocket size.
Apple doesn't want customers with sharp vision.
Otherwise these customers would see a triple reflection of themselves from macbook's "screen" (aka mirror)...

For the unaware, the Roheryn server is a “preview server” (not a test server, I’ve been told) for Lord of the Rings Online. It’s the staging ground for the big enhancements they have been introducing into the game since it was launched last April (has it really only been six months?!), and usually it’s not the final version that actually goes into production. As they are getting ready to publish the Book 11 expansion, which includes player housing, the Lotro Gold changes are in Roheryn but no houses were on sale except for a limited period of time yesterday afternoon (1-4 PM EDT). Judging from the turnout at the “Open House” event, considering that it was held during working hours on a working day, a great number of people must have been as excited about the new feature as I was. Here are a couple of pictures to show you what I mean.
