Amazon pre-orders for Snow Leopard, Server price cut in half
Just another sign that Apple's next generation OS is right around the corner, 9to5mac affiliate Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for Snow Leopard. The product is slated to ship in September and starts at $29 for a single user upgrade from Leopard. Other pricing options are shown below (Snow Leopard only runs on Intel processors):
- 10.6 Snow Leopard: $29
- Snow Leopard Family Pack (5-User): $49
- Box Set (Snow Leopard including iWork and iLife):$169
- Box Set Family Pack (5-User):$229
- Snow Leopard Server version 10.6 $499
Apple now only offers one option for Snow Leopard Server instead of the 10-client and unlimited client, which had been offered before. The price of the unlimited client is now placed at the price of the 10-client (half off).
Amazon offers free shipping and a Pre-order Price Guarantee. If the Amazon.com price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price.

Amazon sells iLife 09 and iWork 09 for $54 ea. Plus $30 for Snow Leopard is $138. Why are they still selling the Box Set for $170? What am I missing?
The $29 upgrade price is only available if you have Leopard already.
So if you are upgrading from 10..4 Tiger you pay $169 and get iWork and iLife to soften the blow.
The $29 upgrade price for Snow Leopard is for Mac users that already have Leopard. The box set is for Mac users that are upgrading from earlier versions of Mac OS X Tiger or Panther. That's what you're missing.
Regards,
You guys seem shocked at the SL Server offering, but it's exactly what Apple disclosed in its press release at WWDC: unlimited clients for $499.
Because its a retail version muppet
Unlimited clients for $499. Amazing!
so does it work as an update (on top of my existing leopard) leaving all my files etc ?
Yes it will update leaving all your old files on your Intel based Mac. Now we won't say if all your applications and drivers will still work, but the files will still be in place. You don't have to erase your hard drive to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
I currently have Tiger on my Imac. I have an external hard drive and backup using SuperDuper. When I get Snow Leopard should I do archive and install or erase and install? Does it really matter?
If it isn't too much trouble for you I would myself do a complete erase and have a fresh install of everything. But that's just me. You really wouldn't need to but I personally think it would run a little bit better.
@Joe De La Blanco -
I think if you do an erase and want to do a fresh install, Snow Leopard will prompt you for an install disk from a previous version.
I currently have Tiger and I was wondering if Snow Leopard can only be used with Leopard or if it can be purchased as more than just a leopard upgrade.
Will it support Windows 7 and linux os's under bootcamp ?
If I am on Tiger, I would rather buy Leopard available for 97$ from Amazon and then the 29$ upgrade rather than buying the boxset for 169$
