Some new Snow Leopard 10A402 observations

We've been playing with Snow Leopard 10A402 for a few hours.  Here's a running list of what we've found:

Significant snappieness™ all around.  Shut down takes 5 seconds.  Startup significantly faster as well.  This isn't one of those "I think it is faster".  It is more like "Dayum!"

Exposé on multiple monitors is fixed.

Battery life says about 30% longer (no time to put into practice - yet)

In the Dock, you now get menus like right and below.

New version of Quicktime 10(42)...

It seems like these latest Expose features are bringing more and more touch features to the OS.  Do we really have to point to where this is going?

Can you confirm or deny the rumor that said SL would give multitouch gestures to older MBs and MBPs?

It was KINDA confirmed.

Don't know if that means ALL MB/MBP/MBA, since they all have two finger scrolling.

Or the more logical one, the older design MBP and MBA (2008 models) that had the multitouch before the unibodies came out.

I can confirm this. I am

I can confirm this.
I am running it on an older MBP, and it works.

I don't know what you're meaning by "older MB & MBPs" but on my 2007 macbook it still not working ...

what the heck is up with the black menu's and white text.

What has apple gonen back to DOS for inspiration?

RE: Fugly Interface

They simply wanted all the Dock pop-ups to match with what they created with "Stacks" feature. And personally I like the way it looks and the interaction with objects and highlighting is much better.

Better menus

I like the white text on a dark background. The existing black on gray is difficult to see.

I have discovered that when I highlight a folder to open in the dock list menu, it will NOT open the finder window to that folder. That really sucks. Has anyone else come across this?

Also, why on earth did they invert the dock expose menus with quit at the top? That is a HUGE problem.

The white on black is nice, but it would be great to implement across contextual menus, even menubar menus, EVEN THE MENU BAR ITSELF!

Now that would be very interesting. How Vista is that!? At least the choice would be nice.

Yes, SL isa quite snappy, but only so long as you are testing it with no external devices attached. In particular, the attachment of external hard drives, card readers, etc. (anything that mounts a volume in Finder), that speed evaporates. On both my iMac 2007 and 13 inch MBP, shut down takes less than 5 seconds and startup takes 15 to 20 to get to the desktop. However, when I attach my four firewire disks (FW800), shutdown times sextupple (35 seconds) and startup times quintupple ( over a minute and a half). I assume the delay has something to do with the protocols required for mounting and unmounting external hard drives. This is a real disappointment, particularly given the advances made in TCP/IP response. Mounting volumes on other computers over TCP/IP take only half as much time. I no longer see the spinning beachball of delay when connecting my MBP, iMac and MacMini over the homw network. Why not similar time savings in mounting local volumes? Arghhhh.

One nice thing I noticed is that the install process has eliminated the need for a second reboot if you already have a version of OS X installed. Under SL, the initial copying of files and initial setup procedures occur as a process running under whichever version of OS X is currently running. After this is complete, the machine reboots into the final setup stages and shaves a good amount of time off of the install process.
