Skype on AppleTV, Final Cut Pro on iPod?

Kids today!  So smart but wasting their talents in the wrong places.  Take a one Mr. Brandon Holland from the Great White North.  At the ripe age of 19, he's developing a Skype hack for the AppleTV.  While a commendable feat, not many people want to be making phone calls from their TV's.  Why not spend your time working on a SlingPlayer hack for AppleTV?  Or better yet get your lovely Skype hacking abilities on the iPhone/iPod Touch already.  Someone call Erica Sadun to mentor this kid stat!

He wrote into AppleTV Hacks and said:

Hey Apple TV Hacks, I have started developing a Skype Plugin that will utilize the Skype API and make the user able to make calls and send text messages to anyone on there Skype contact list. As far as calls go, I think a standard usb headset or usb phone will work. Text messages will most likely be entered using the remote and the standard text entering method. No release yet, but I will release a beta as soon as it is able to make calls. Huzzah!

True, who even would use a headset and connect it to their apple tv just to make phone calls? Seems like he really could be developing something more useful.

final cut pro on ipod, really?

Duh... video chat.  Maybe

Duh... video chat.  Maybe he expects to be able to plug in a USB camera (with built in mic) and make video calls from an HDTV.  would be pretty nice.

Useful iPhone hacks?  What the heck happened to A2DP.  I've been waiting patiently for someone to bring A2DP to my iPhone without the use of a stupid dongle.

obviously, he meant making

obviously, he meant making video calls over skype, using the old trusty external isight webcams... even grandma could use it, how does not even have a clue how to send an email. so it could be a useful addition to the new apple tv.

Skype is a horrible,

Skype is a horrible, proprietary, strange messenger. I hope that skype will never find a way on AppleTV, iPhone etc.

The future is jabber + jingle.

I get that "Final Cut Pro on

I get that "Final Cut Pro on iPod" in the title was just sarcasm to highlight the ridiculousness of putting skype on AppleTV, but that doesn't change the fact that it would be pretty awesome to have a basic video editor on the iPhone. I might even consider an iPhone at that point. Or an iPod touch with a built in cam. Or an iPod touch with a line-in for a video camera

What is wrong with Skype on

What is wrong with Skype on Apple TV.    Frankly I think it is a good idea, especially if video chat can be enabled and you can do PIP on your set.   Imagine being able to watch naked yoga while you video chat with a friend over Skype.

Of course that is my wild imagination, with respect to yoga, but the fact remains it could be very handy.   Watch a ball game while keeping in touch.   Watch a business video while reviewing the contents with plants overseas.    Keep in touch with loved ones while natural disastors are taking place.    There are all sorts of use for Skpe on an Apple TV like device.

Thanks

I wish somebody would explain why the heck anyone would buy an Apple TV ... if it recorded live, perfect ... but as it is, it's just a glorified router for iTunes. They should give it away free to promote media sales.

I'm totally clueless to this ... when Apple says "We think we got it right this time.", I think "got WHAT right?"

He's really modding the Apple TV for use inside a car as an entertainment system (if you look at the site....).

In that case, seems like making phone on the go might be useful?

Actually FCP is on iPod

I like how the article bashes FCP on a iPod. Think about it..

I run Photoshop/Illustrator off the ipod, and FCS. It caries my license from computer to computer. So when I'm out freelancing I constantly have my own applications, preferences and custom keyboard maps...
