Rogers offers Canada $30/month 6GB data plan
Rogers Wireless has bowed slightly to public pressure, introducing a $30 per month 6GB data plan to allay some of the criticism the carrier's been facing over its iPhone tariffs.
The carrier will also open up six of its Candian retail stores at 8am on July 11 to sell the iPhone 3G. Customers attending launch day events at these Rogers Plus stores will be treated to a free early bird breakfast and have a chance to win Rogers Wireless prizes.
Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers who activate by August 31 on a three year contract, a data-only offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be added to any in-market voice plan.
"As Canada's leading wireless carrier, Rogers is excited to bring iPhone 3G to Canadians even sooner, allowing our customers to be amongst the first in the world to experience this amazing mobile innovation," says John Boynton, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Wireless. "To celebrate its launch on Canada's fastest wireless network, we're rolling out the red carpet with special events at six Rogers Plus stores and a limited time price promotional data offer from coast-to-coast."
The following Rogers Plus stores in these cities will open their doors at 8am (all times local) on Friday, July 11 for advance purchases of the Apple iPhone 3G:
Toronto: 112-10 Dundas Street East
Montreal: 1015 rue St. Catherine Ouest
Ottawa: 690 Bank Street
Halifax: Unit 265, 7001 Mumford Road
Calgary: 5244 Falsbridge Gate, NE
Vancouver: 2097 West Broadway

What's really funny about this story is that the photo is from the former SkyDome now Rogers Centre (yes the same Rogers) where the Blue Jays play.
Yep. i simply couldn't resist that one
Thats pretty much unlimited data for $30 on top of whatever data plan. Why is that Rogers giving in only slightly? Seems like a huge change.
The only issue I see is the limited time promotional offer.
So are they still charging $15 for caller ID? That part just makes me want to throw up in my mouth.
...if you already have caller id in your plan, you keep it. the way i read it, it's $30 for the data, and whatever you already have, you keep.
Mmmm, I for one can't wait to eat bird.
I'm surprised, I thought they were going to ride the Bell/Telus text message announcement beyond the iPhone launch.
Bell and Telus, now charging 15 cents a pop for incoming text messages, even if it's spam. Rogers response: "WE don't do that, check out this iPhone!"
I thought they'd try to sell a few more iPhones on the strength of that alone.
Man, when 15,000 people get all pissed off at your prices and you pull a Comcast "Limited Time Offer"??!?!
Sure for the iPhone, 6GB is _basically_ "unlimited" and it's 1GB more than the 5GB cap that the American wireless companies put on the AirCards and Tethering plans. So we call it "Unlimited" for $30 CAD/Month which is a little cheaper than the American $30/mo unlimited AT&T plan. Although, I'm not too thrilled at $30/mo for unlimted data, especially when the 3G coverage is abysmal.
What erks me is the Limited Promotional Offer. I am not Canadian, but Rogers - PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS. Seriously. Give your consumers a steady, low price without all the BULLSHIT.

Thing is, to keep your current plan and add the 30$ data plan, you still need to buy the iPhone, and that will be at full price (little less than 800$ from what I've read). The 199$ price is only if you choose from one of the 4 packages they did for the iPhone.
so we are still screwed...
Where did you read that? From Liz Hamilton (Rogers spokesperson) any $30+ plan qualifies for the $199 price.
why is it 3 different sites have this story, yet not one provides easy linkage to the official page announcing this?
Irritating.
This is just a baby step in the right direction... Don't get me wrong I think this is a good move for Roger's and for it's customers. Roger's should be applauded for being responsive, and doubly so for being response in such a short time frame (big companies don't/can't usually move so quickly). However, IMHO the true goal should be "more flexibility for the consumer." I hope Oilchange.com continues the revolution (Oilchange.com bought ruinediphone.com)
Therefore the "win" here for the consumer is that a data plan is being offered uncoupled from the voice plan. Not that you could have a data plan without a voice plan (that'd be even better, similar to all of us that would like DSL without a voice plan and get screwed in the process), but you don't need a top tier ($$) voice plan to get a robust data plan, or vice versa.
The ideal would be that all services would be offered a la cart at differing price points.. and all without a contract. Pick independently from 4-5 voice plans, 4-5 messaging plans, 4-5 data plans, and be free to take your hardware elsewhere at any time. Do recall that while not "sanctioned" there are apps out there for VOIP and Tethering. Rogers is wise to not assume users wouldn't make use of those and run up there data use accordingly. Therefore, if the top tier of those were to be unlimited, that's great, but those SHOULD be expensive. I'm much more concerned at the value of the bottom tier of service than at the top.
Specifically in regards to Rogers text messaging I obviously think paying separately for text message plans is fantastic and should NOT change. Personally I don't use that many text messages a month (a dozen or so at most) and it's always cheaper for me to pay per message than $5 for 200 or whatever the AT&T package happens to be. Further there are now apps that bypass text messaging altogether. I would hate to lose the opportunity to "save" a few dollars by being forced into a package I wouldn't make use of.
So, again this is just a baby step for consumers, an important one, but small one.
For all those that can't imagine non-unlimited plans... consider this. Once upon a time we had land line based phones and there was no such thing as contracts nor unlimited plans. It was simple you paid for what you used. Further mobile phones now all have the processing power and communication facility to accurately track your expenses in real time. Few providers make use of such functionality easily accessible because if they did YOU the consumer might reduce your usage if you were, but you could and would know at any instant exactly how much of your allotted minutes, messages, data cap you've utilized.
And only locked in for a three year contract. What a deal! ;)
