Apple's iPad fails to convert everybody...yet....

Huge pre-launch expectation and Apple’s own ‘magical’ iPad marketing may turn out to be a negative play for the Cupertino computer company, with at least one market research firm claiming potential consumers lost interest in the device after the announcement.

“Not only did Apple fail to convince new buyers, it may have lost many potential buyers who now say they don’t think they need an Apple tablet computer,” Retrevo research revealed.

Retrevo’s study asked consumers whether or not they had heard about the tablet before the tablet was introduced and again after the announcement. The word definitely got out as the number of respondents saying they had heard about the tablet rose from 48% shortly before the announcement to over 80% after the media frenzy on January 27th.

However, like most industry watchers, Retrevo reflects that its the applications - particularly the plethora of individual apps designed to harness the power of iPad for niche groups - which will make the iPad a success.

“As we like to say, it’s the apps that sell smartphones like the iPhone and it could very well be those same apps that motivate buyers to run down to the Apple Store and get in line to buy a shiny new iPad,” the company says.

I like the alternatives you give - stupid or monkey? Are they mutually exclusive? I mean, we all evolved from monkeys, so in that sense we are all monkeys. Stupidity is relative; compared to Einstein I may be stupid, compared to a single cell organism I am not. Are monkeys stupid? You imply they are not. Interesting choice of insulting alternatives.

"I'd like to buy one" cannot be translated to "I will buy one." The first measures the desire the second measures the ability. The most important poll occurs at the cash register and we shall see the true measure of peoples' willingness to purchase.

Alternative headline: 30% of consumers are considering buying an iPad, up from 22% before the announcement.

Neither does anyone what you think, so maybe we all should just stop writting comments, because noone is interested in anyones thoughts. That simple. Stupid Apple fanboys everywhere, I can see them like ghosts.

My experience so far of the people who keep 'dissing' the iPad, are people who have never actually owned an iPod Touch or an iPhone. Many people, I already knew, through internet forums, who expressed an interest in buying one before they were announced, were also expecting to see a Mac tablet, running 'proper' OS X with multitasking etc. The biggest moan I get from people so far is that the iPad is nothing more than an iPod Touch with a larger screen. What these moaners completely fail to recognise, is that apart from being partially true, the greatest improvement is that of a bigger screen- which IMHO, will have a marked improvement on the way many of the already developed apps will behave- (ie the 'revolution', has already been started by the already existing iPhone and iPod Touch). The iPad will also run Skype, so all that nonsense about the iPad not being a phone is also, well, nonsense too! ;)

I agree. I own an iPod Touch, and I would love to have one with a larger screen. I have never touched any other Apple product and am a very heavy Microsoft/PC user in my job, but I love my iPod Touch.

1000 selected Retrevo users is hardly a convincing sample group. At least they do post that in their report. How is this in ANY way conclusive? What IS a Retrevo user? (As far as I can tell from former posts on that site, there is a strong anti-Apple bias.)

I do not need a bigger iPod, but I could use a tablet with netbook capabilities.

Though bigger iPod it is. But still charming for everybody. I plan to get one.

A very large proportion of iPad buyers will be the same people who already own an iPhone or iPod Touch (75 million to date) and people who haven't owned a Mac or PC in the past, and younger gamers. Are these people represented in a statistically relevant way in the Retrevo survey?

What kind of gamers do you think will be using the iPad as a dedicated gaming device? No gamer in their right mind would get an iPad over an XBox, PS3, or a Wii.

Vision? He just clearly plays games, and it's obvious the iPad is pointless. Too expensive, too big, and with crappy interface.

I'd like to point out that the number of "Yes, but I won't buy one" only went up because the "No and I'm not interested" went down. So all that happened is that the people who were already unaware and uninterested because aware and uninterested, this isn't a loss.

The "Yes and I'm interested" tripled. It's still just under 10%, but if they can get 10% of the market to pick up one of their tablets? They'll be doing just fine.

If you look at the "yes and I'm interested" combined with the "yes and I'd like to know more/see more" - that went from 22% to 30% - so that's a potential market right there.

To say that the public is less interested after the reveal based only on the "Yes but I won't buy one" response is a little disingenuous.

Not sure where you're getting the 22%. Overall combined interest in the iPad (vs. dead-set against) was 39% to start with, and dropped to 30% post press-release.
