Red's new camera is out and for those out there willing to spend just shy of $3000. Not a bad deal for such high end specs, but we'd probably still take a Canon 5D Mark II but what do we know?

This will revolutionize the pr0n industry! Especially the 3D camera. Now if only RED had an iPhone native app....then they'd be on to something.

The sensor that's a comperable size to the 5D is the S35, which costs $28k. Much better recording specs (150fps, 5k resolution), but for standard 1080p shooting the 5D looks better to me. Not to mention the lenses will probably be much cheaper and affordable for the Canon.
But if you're shooting effects for the next Batman film, this is the camera to have. What a great time for video!

1. The 5D skips rows and does all sorts of other pixel skipping rubbish to get a 1080p image. Then compresses it to H.264. If you think that's a better way to shoot video, I assume you're not planning on making a habit or a living out of it.
2. All the new RED cameras can take Canon, Nikon, RED or PL mount lenses.
Love the skew on the new 5D by the way - it's ace, and a lovely by-product of the delightful row and pixel skipping the camera offers as a no-cost extra. I imagine it's wonderful on a tripod, static, in low light however, if you're happy with compression artifacts etc. etc.
C'mon guys...
It doesn't make any sense to compare the Canon with the Red. This is not an average consumer camera. I was actually surprised to see it on 9to5!
The Red camera is revolutionizing the concept of digital camera for professional cinema. It provides better quality and way cheaper prices than film stock cameras.
Peter Jackson is a great Red enthusiast. And if anyone wants to check out how its image feels on the big screen, Angels & Demons was shot in Red and it's coming out in May next year.
