This is a great example of "you get what you pay for". CNET spends most of the video pointing and laughing at the hardware. We especially appreciate the Parallel, Serial and PS2 ports. Those will definitely come in handy. And with quality components like that, who cares if they are in business in a year?
I disagree. This is fantastic to see what a piece of junk Psystar is. It also helps put to bed the Apple "mac tax" -- see how to get an $800 Mac? Balloon the footprint, drop modern connectivity, and use likely bottom of the barrel components. Oh. And no mention of a monitor. And you're there! What a deal!
Firstly reviewing something that is illegal annoys me and then he calls is OS'ex' now call me picky but it annoys me - its a 10!! haven't people learnt??
OS X is a play on more then just the number
OS X was the Mac OS that came after OS 9.
So the X stands for 10
OS X was also the first Unix based Mac OS out there.
So they are also using the X to refer to that
.
So to say that you have to call it "OS Ten" would not be the right to do.
.
Also remember Apple is always saying "OS X 10.x" not "OS 10.x" or "OS X.x" (i.e. OS X.6)
So the name is "OS X"
OS X is not the first UNIX based MacOS. "X" is the Roman number of 10. So, the name is "OS Ten". Of course, you won't see Apple saying something like OX X.6. Apple is not as dumb as you thought to mix different number systems into it. That's why you only see "OS X" (OS Ten) or OS 10.6 instead of your crazy thought of X.6 (or 10.VI).
Type the words into a word app and let text to speech have at it. You can also listen to any of Apple's Macworld or Developer Conferences to hear it pronounced repeatedly. That is, Mac oh ess ten. If you're going to mispronounce it, at least go with something like Mac o' sex.
Apple often takes stances that are a bit odd so as to generate controversy and get attention. Look how many are still arguing over OS X after all these years, as with "Think different" and Apple's use of the lower case "i" to begin many product names. It amounts to priceless exposure for Apple, it gives pundits something to complain about while strengthening brand recognition, and years later sites like this can fill up message boards. So, it's good for Apple and everybody who prattles on about it.

in 9+ years, I have yet to hear Steve Jobs say "Oh-Es-Ex". It's not generic, it's not open source it's a brand. If the company who makes it calls it "Oh-Es-Ten", then perhaps (after 9+ years) the name is "Oh-Es-Ten".

HOW MUCH? Are they kidding about the price for this piece of crap? Is SL at least included and pre-installed? They do not show anything, but just claim how fast it might be.
However, any chance that serial and parallel port are supported by OSX itself? I don't have any clue what could be done then - but it would be nice for some shell/unix applications.
I agree. A supposed expert should know it's OS 10.
And then he compares the price to an iMac which of course includes the monitor is completely stupid.
Typical CNET though...

Hey, you made a VERY good point that I hadn't noticed. You are really, absolutely correct that the iMac 24" that the video was comparing to comes with the monitor! AH! You're right...it's not a fair comparison! I don't know how I missed that. I hope though that the CNET editors read your comment and realise that oops they made a mistake too.
Ok the case is uber poor. The motherboard has been selected for compatibility probably. But still out performs a mac that is DOUBLE the price. If anything it asks questions why apple are able to charge so much for there hardware. I'm a long standing mac user and have seen my fair share of recent poor build quality issues from apple products. But a $1000 premium just for design aesthetics is pure madness.
Hackintosh any alienware (dell)... it's the same performance if not more than a way more expensive powermac. Thats where my $1000 charge comes from.
You cannot argue with that. It just is.
In an exercise of futility, I went on Dell's site and configured a Xeon workstation to match the specs of the Mac Pro. The Dell was more expensive.
I think what you're trying to say is that most people don't need a Xeon workstation, and that your average Core i5 or i7 are more than adequate for Joe Consumer, and even Joe PowerUser.
Unfortunately Apple doesn't make systems based on these (why ?!).
I whole-heartedly agree that Apple should release something in between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro that could at least cater to the occasional PowerUser.
They could just call it... the "Mac".
Who would buy a Psystar computer? It clearly is built terribly. If you want a good hackintosh, build it yourself. I have a PC laptop, a Dell netbook, and a rig that I built myself, all running Snow leopard. I plan on getting a Macbook pro 13 soon.
It really isn't hard to build a good hackintosh yourself, and there's no problem with doing so. The Mac Pro is horribly overpriced. You can easily build a comparable computer (Core i7 P55, 4 GB RAM, better video card) for around $800, vs. $2500 for the Mac Pro.
It's not an issue of whether this particular hardware config with OS X is good or not...it's whether such a thing will fly legally and whether people will want to buy it (so biggies like HP and Dell could sell their hardware with SL installed).

Yes, it is. A/UX was not MacOS. It had a MacOS like virtual machine, but was not MacOS itself.
And Apple (including Jobs) officially said it is pronounced OS Ten.

It is a 10. Leave it alone.

He says the bottom line iMac runs $1500.00. He's off by $2-$300.00 depending on if you get education discount or some other type of discount.
