Psystar drops bomb. Sells software to turn PCs into Macs

Psystar isn't just going to sell its Hackintosh technology to OEMs. It is now selling it to the general public for $50.  Dubbed Rebel EFI and a 8MB download, the software promises to let PCs equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, i7 or Xeon Nehalem CPUs to run Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard.”  There is no word on whether or not Intel Atom processors, which are part of most netbooks, will be supported.

Featuring Psystar's newest technology for allowing for the smooth interfacing between operating systems and generic Intel hardware, Rebel EFI allows for the easy installation of multiple operating systems on a single system. The authenticated version allows for the permanent installtion of these OS's on your system, as well as providing the DUBL, supported hardware profile features and related drivers, and support for the application.

Rebel EFI is free to try and download, though it will have limited hardware functionality and a run-time of two hours.

Yeah im sure microsoft really

Yeah im sure microsoft really want people installing OSX on their pc's instead of windows 7...........

hehe... well if you think of

107

hehe... well if you think of it, they actually might want that ;)

I real doubt MS has an issue

87

I real doubt MS has an issue with it. Since MS does not control the PC's you can install Windows on like Apple does with OS X.

Thats some stones! Talk

117

Thats some stones! Talk about scorched earth.

Don't really see how RIAA can extract $80,000 (+) a song from an individual and Pystar can circumvent software protections with impunity.

Perhaps Apple needs to "Think Different" and bring civil cases against the managers or something. Pystar almost as much hutzpah as Pirate Bay.

Waiting for Apple to

1219

Waiting for Apple to graciously escort them to legal hell.
I seriously hope these guys go down hard.

Why?

1513

Why?

Exactly. None of us have any

915

Exactly. None of us have any reason to be anything but grateful that they are trying to open up the market for OS X. This only spurs more competition for Apple and better products and better prices for us.

Stop with the knee jerk reactions and think this through. This is good.

Awesome competition. You

118

Awesome competition. You innovate and another steals it. Way to go!

Oh, if only anyone was

711

Oh, if only anyone was stealing anything. All of these are legal copies of OS X...Apple is still making the money they would if these were purchased as upgrades for existing Macs.

Put down the Kool-Aid for a minute, kid.

It's not clear whether

47

It's not clear whether they're legal or illegal. They're definitely installed in contravention of the End User Licence Agreement (if you don't know why then try learning about common nouns versus proper nouns), so legality rests on its enforceability. And that's a legal question that remains unanswered.

Of course, the idiots at Psystar prefer to shout about antitrust, which clearly doesn't apply in the slightest, so it's possible the issue may remain unanswered indefinitely.

Despite the fact that these

45

Despite the fact that these are legal copies, the fact of the matter is still that they are not installing them on Apple machines, which is blatantly against Apple's EULA for its OS's.
Go give Snow Leopard's EULA a read. Here, http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/macosx106.pdf.

Let's say I'm a car tire manufacturer. Now let's say that I make all customers agree to only put my tires on brand X cars (kind of like clicking "I agree" like everyone does so mindlessly). Now if a customer puts my tires on a brand Y car, I have the right to sue them, for violating the agreement.

The long and short of it is that Psystar is doing something illegal, and it's only a matter of time before they're shut down.
Unfortunately, hiding in the shadows behind Psystar are hundreds of small-time developers doing the same thing they are. The more popularity Apple gets, the more they're going to have to adapt.
The difference between Apple and Microsoft here is that Microsoft doesn't produce their own computers, Apple does. In my opinion, the only way for Apple to ever really be competition for Microsoft in terms of market share is if they allow for companies like Psystar to exist. Allowing other companies to produce machines that can run your software might not be such a bad thing for Apple. Just look at how well Microsoft is doing off of the sale of PURELY software.
The simple fact is that Apple could make a huge amount of money if they broke up their company. Apple software, Apple computers. Apple computers manufactures (duh) computers with OSX pre-installed, much like Dell machines. Apple software develops and markets its operating systems and software independent of its machines, like Microsoft.
Now, I'm no expert on the subject, but it seems like this is the only way Apple is going to make it above 15% market share before Jobs kicks the bucket.

I should mention: Don't call me an idiot if I'm wrong, because I likely have no idea what I'm talking about. ;)

"I should mention: Don't call

"I should mention: Don't call me an idiot if I'm wrong, because I likely have no idea what I'm talking about. ;)"

Have to pull you up on something though... Apple don't make money from software – selling software isn't their business. Apple is a company which makes money from HARDware. Allowing users to install their OS on a none Apple machine loses them pretty much their whole business. From your comment i'm guessing you weren't using Macs when we had the licensed Mac clones?

I have to say it's a tempting offer though: $50 and a god spec Dell would be a massive saving on a new machine :)

Hey wow, it's a Psystar

1210

Hey wow, it's a Psystar shill, explaining why we should be grateful. You steal, and "the people" benefit!

Except that while Psystar is ripping off someone else's IP, the only benefit most of us will get is the risk that Apple will end up locking the OS down like Windows and it's endless endless endless registration codes.

Apple has to make a hundred OS sales to make up for a single lost hardware sale. Their OS sales won't increase by 100x by what Psystar is doing, dipshit. Probably won't even be a single sale of the OS, because people who steal, steal.

Presumably, I'm talking about you. Not that you've got the class to feel bad about it.

Whatever happened to injunctions?

maybe we should try to build

maybe we should try to build some kind of key generation for this "software" and distribute it wildly to force them out of business...

the psystar guys definitely

the psystar guys definitely have balls ;-)
heck - why not. it seems to put apple under some pressure - thats good for all of us - i wouldn't complain if apple innovates even more (so that people WANT original apple hardware because it is soooo much better) and drops the prices :-)

after all it's good that more and more companies punch apple in the face. they deserve it with their damn app store restrictions (i am a longtime apple user and also develop software for the mac)

"thats good for all of us" I

"thats good for all of us"

I wonder who those "us" are.

It'll be very bad for all of us (specially the hackintosh community) when Apple start verifying everything along the way in Mac OS.

Want to upgrade your Mac OS? first please install the genuine Mac Hardware verification app, enter your hardware serial number and software serial number.

Have fun.

someone dropped the bomb...

73

their web site is off the internets....

I own 3 Macs. So far so good.

711

I own 3 Macs. So far so good. Love them.
Apple offers no Mac like a PC i can upgrade myself.
For instance I'd like to have the Mini like the new model for server's. Yeh, but have to pay the premium for MAC OSX-Server.
At last I (must and) will buy or make myself a cheap PC and install Mac OSX.

No need for a premium like for anodized aluminium.

My MacBook lacks that without any problem ;-)

System Requirements?

If it will run on a "Intel Core 2 Duo", can anyone tell me if it will run on a "Intel Centrino Duo"? From what I read these two processors are essentially the same thing, just different branding.
