Pro App Store app for music-makers

There's lots of focus on enterprise applications and games when it comes to iPhone software, but its professional creative users who form the Apple heartland - and musicians have always been familiar with the platform, so we'd like to introduce you to ProRemote, THE iPhone application for pro musicians, and their crew.

ProRemote runs on the iPhone and iPod touch that uses your existing wireless network to control professional audio products such as Digidesign’s ProTools and Apple’s Logic Music production systems.

The software offers users either 8 channels (light edition) or 32 channels of remote control with real-time colour metering and 40mm touch sensitive virtual faders. Up to 8 faders can be controlled simultaneously.

The full version includes a dedicated transport view that allows users to do audio scrubbing/shuttling, set markers (memory locations) and control many advanced aspects of the transport as well as basic play, record, and return to zero.

"I created ProRemote to make it simple to maintain the creative train of thought while remotely controlling and adjusting pro audio products during the recording process," said Alex Lelievre, Principal Computer Scientist/Owner Far Out Labs. "The combination of the iPhone SDK and the revolutionary iPhone and iPod touch devices met my development needs perfectly helping make the vision of what I wanted to create a reality."

Why is this useful? Imagine you are recording your own guitar part, laying down a melody on your keyboard, whatever, and suddenly get gripped by an idea to improve the results, which will require walking out of your booth and over to your computer. Now you can do it from where you are.

The software communicates using its own highly optimized proprietary protocol to ensure smooth delivery of real-time data over a Wi-Fi link. The Server component has been streamlined for use with CPU intensive digital audio applications and will not interfere with professional sessions.

ProRemote costs $149.99, with a Lite version available for just $39. The software is available at the App Store.

I could definitely see this

2013

I could definitely see this as a useful application. Now if they would release a touchscreen Mac, then I would be all set!

This is just a question of

1313

This is just a question of curiousity. Are these apps really that good? All the WinMo and Palm users say that these iPhone apps are nothing special and that this sort of stuff and better has been around for years on their mobile phones. Plus the WinMo and Palm SDKs are much more powerful and easier to use. Is there any credence to that?

So many times I see what looks like a pretty cool app from the App Store and then I'll go to another site and Palm users will be saying that iPhone mobile applications are crap. There must be something to this. Yes? No? If Palm platform apps are so good then why does Palm continue to lose market share? It doesn't make much sense to me.

If you know the answer... why you ask?
WinMo and Palm users are "souls in sorrow"!

damn ripoff

149$
are they joking????

Great idea, BUT...

1317

This is a great idea... but there's a better product on the market
that streets at $199 that already does all this without using your
$300 iPhone (not to mention the additional $150 for the app, plus
your monthly service fee, of course!) It's made by Frontier Designs
and is called the Tranzport... it even includes the wireless receiver...
For the extra $50 nover the app, it's a no-brainer!

to above poster...are you in

1614

to above poster...are you in the market for this type of app? Do you do audio recording? Are you aware of what goes into developing this sort of app? If so, I accept you complaint.

However, I'm guessing you are just bitching. Just because the app is on the iPhone does not mean it must be cheap and easy to create. The market this app was intended for will decide if it is worth the price.

No, actually, I'm a pro audio

2213

No, actually, I'm a pro audio engineer and studio owner. I use this
stuff to make a living, as do most of my friends... just advice from a
serious studio person, 'tis all. How else would I even know about
the Tranzport if I wasn't ?!?!?

And, yes, I have developed software products (AU plug-ins) and fully
realize what effort goes into it. (And even appreciate the coolness of this product, too...)

I just can imagine how pissed I'd be if I lost control of my ProTools session while tracking because I got hit by an incoming call... not good!

But, hey... that's just my useless opinion anyway.

i'm also a pro sound

1711

i'm also a pro sound recording engineer and i second that there is way better control surfaces than that and they don't require a 600$ iphone or 300$ touch to work

and yes 150$ for 8 sliders(virtual) is a damn ripoff, proof is on installer there is one that offers 4 times that+xy pad+matrix, for free

price price price

1719

I'm sorry, but I use logic a lot and this app would be mildly useful for alot of what I do.... but.... it is totally over priced. you can get such good hardware that does this and alot more, for a bit more money. i bought beatmaker 11.99 and it is well worth that ( i know this is more 'pro'), drop the price and you will sell alot more!

How about this?

7613

I'd rather have pro DAW software that ran on the iPhone. Think
about it for a second- Logic Express Mobile? Now THAT would rock!
And how about a connector that lets you use any firewire audio interface
with the iPhone, too? I'd pay $500 EASY for a setup like that..

: )

1916

Yes! That WOULD rock!
