ProSwitcher - WebOS-like backgrounding on the iPhone

For you Jailbreakers out there, here's an app that really brings some interesting functionality to your iPhone.

ProSwitcher, a big breakthrough in the iPhone and iPod touch Jailbreak community, replicates the Palm Pre’s  seamless “Cards” multi-tasking feature. There is a high demand for the Pre's multi-tasking capabilities among iphone users and our initial tests show that this is a great way to add that capability to the iPhone.

ProSwitcher is a front-end interface to the popular “Backgrounder” application that has been circulating the jailbreak community for awhile now. The app allows you finely customize the way you want to multitask apps. You can trigger the cards view by opening the application from home-screen, touching the status bar, or by double clicking the home button. To add an application to the Cards view, you simple have to launch the app, then hold down the home button for about one to two seconds. To remove an app from the “Cards” view click the close button on the top left of the card, to swipe the card up the screen.

To download, add the Boolean Magic repository into Cydia, by adding http://booleanmagic.com/repo into your sources list.  Actually, ProSwitcher just showed up in the BigBoss repository so you'll see it in Cydia if you search for it.  Proswitcher will also install the latest Backgrounder app needed to function.

This app is highly recommended for advanced jailbroken users on iPhone 3GS or latest generation iPod touch.  If you are on anything earlier, you see significant slowdown if you use anything more than a few apps.  Still, it is nice to be able to run Pandora or Fring in the background.

Interestingly, this application shows that real multitasking can work on the iPhone 3GS and above.  We'd like to see Apple make this type of functionality available in OS 4.0.

nice work!

What are the battery effects of using this kind of app? Hopefully Apple beefs up the battery in the next iPhone so an official multitasking solution can be offered for 3rd party apps.

Hey,

So far in my tests there has not been a battery life issue. I have had pandora playing in the background, the weather loading, downloading an app, all while playing motochaser. So so far in my tests I have been fine. This also maybe because I am using an iPhone 3GS which "supposedly" has a beefier battery.

Truly a beauty of an app. I have gone back and forth on jailbreaking my 3gs but this one will definitely have me keeping my phone jailbroken.

Hi,

Really I can say heart of application.I have also heard that ProSwitch also offers capabilities for generic file management, including reception, format administration and processing of other types of files.Great.

I've been using Kirikae for my multitasking, which is great, but this looks awesome.  The only advantage I like with Kirikae is that when it brings up your lists of active apps, theres also a favorite tabs so you can launch any app you want while you're in another app, without having to go back to home screen.

Either way Apple really needs to add this functionality to the next iPhone OS, because it really doesn't negatively impact the battery and is EXTREMELY useful once you actually have it.  I couldn't imagine not being able to multitask anymore on my iPhone.

This kind of functionality will never show up on the iphone, although I'd like it to.  Apple doesn't want the iphone feeling "unlocked" with something like this and I'm guessing it would cause lots of crashes due to low RAM for people that don't know what they're doing.  The image of a device with great design and stability is too important.

I've bounced back and forth between a jailbroken phone and not, but have not jailbroken my 3GS yet.  Does anyone have a recommendation for which method to use?  I've used pwnage before, but am uncertain which route to go with the 3GS and  3.1.2 firmware - thanks!

Use blackra1n! Perfect!
