If you are feeling lucky, head over to Software Update and update your iTunes to 8.2.1. Unless, of course, you have a Palm Pre and want to sync with iTunes ever again. Reports indicate that this update breaks Pre syncing, at least for now. With all of the Apple break-updates lately, we are less excited about slamming the "update now" button everytime it comes up (like we usually do).

I don't blame them. I think
I don't blame them. I think it is really cheap of Palm to rely on a competitor's product for syncing.
Intersting Point, But...
It's an interesting point, but it leaves me with a question:
How similar is Apple's moves to what (near monopoly) Microsoft did 15 years ago?
Microsoft had a near-monopoly in the OS space (and kind of still do); Apple has a near-monopoly in the PMP space.
Microsoft stopped the software of their competitors from running seamlessly on their most popular product, Windows; Apple outright stopped their competitor's from using a non-Apple device with their most popular product, iTunes.
Palm is the scrappy underdog that Apple was in the 90s.
Is Apple taking similar steps Microsoft took over a decade ago? Are we OK with that?
Eh, the problem with that
Eh, the problem with that logic is that Palm stole IP to implement it the current way. Here is a list...
Usb Vendor ID (costs apple more than thousands of dollars a year)
Apple Usb Vendor Name
Vendor Number
Ipod Hash and Encryption Signature (It is a weak encryption but its there)
Also Apple only has a license with the record industries for itunes to sync with ipods.
Palm didn't steal anything.
Palm didn't steal anything. when the Pre is in “Media Sync” mode it identifies itself as an Apple iPod. However, it’s only the Mass Storage interface that identifies itself as an iPod. The root USB node (IOUSBDevice) still identifies the device as a Palm Pre.
And now I direct you to this
And now I direct you to this KB article from the Kremlin itself:

Third-party syncing in iTunes is not without precedent. This is just two kids not playing well in the sandbox.
Does it break syncing to
Does it break syncing to jailbreaked iPhones as well?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA *gasp* aAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
sorry, I couldn't help myself. I hope Palm gets a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against them for declaring "full itunes syncing" to help sell their rip-off device. I know Apple would if they advertised something they had no future control of.
This is for your benefit
This is for your benefit because you clearly have no idea what it is you just said:

First sentence pretty much sums up your faux pas.
This is just because Palm
This is just because Palm never could write decent syncing software themselves.
Let's hope that for the benefit of Pre owners Palm is at least trying to do that and will come out with their own syncing solution in the near future.
Couldn't they just use
Couldn't they just use Doubletwist?
Couldn't they just use
Couldn't they just use Doubletwist?
@DW If you had coded
@DW
If you had coded software that you were proud of and were having success with, do you think it would be honest and correct for your direct competition to hack a way into your software for the benefit of their product? To take advantage of your hard work and effort for their personal gain, without your permission? I don't think so...
I don't care poorly Palm is doing, they don't have the right to take advantage of Apples syncing solution instead of creating their own.... Honestly, if they can come up with a "revolutionary" mobile OS, you'd think they could have at least come up with a simple syncing solution...
Serves Palm right
Palm was trying to pull a fast one and got kicked in the stones for it. I give them credit for the gumption to try it, but really there was no other foreseeable outcome.
Note to Palm: Just license the intellectual property rights next time and this won't be a problem.

Killing my free tethering was cold. Very cold.
"Plus, use the Palm media
"Plus, use the Palm media sync feature to transfer your DRM-free iTunes music, videos, and photos to your Pre.6
6 Compatible with iTunes v8.2. Compatibility with future versions not guaranteed. Within wireless coverage area only."
I seriously think that the
I seriously think that the programmers at Palm are a bunch of lazy bastards.
If they want syncing, they can build their own software. Thats it.
I don't think it is fair
When apple offered iTunes they did it as part of their OS X as their operating system digital media player (for playing and organizing digital music and video files), so in fact when you buy music or movies from the itunes store you have the right to play them in any device you would like to, or are we supporting monopoly here?, my question is: Is monopoly bad when microsoft does it, but it is good when is done by apple?
Apple isn't stopping the Pre
Apple isn't stopping the Pre from playing files downloaded through iTunes, just from using iTunes sync to put them on the device.
Blind Faith
I just want to be clear with this, all my computers have been and are Apple computers (since the Apple II came out), I cannot think about myself having another phone but the iphone, I like the fact that Apple always try to keep a good integration software-hardware, but I also have my iphone jailbroken and unlocked, and I want to be able to make decisions for myself about with devices I want to sync with the software I have, and what software iI want to use in them too, even If very likely they will be Apple devices, Apple have been sometimes getting into monopoly practices, as Microsoft does, like attaching customer to carriers to get more profit from the carrier and with the iphone developers, charging them just to be able to use their own created apps in their own phone, and limiting developer filtering them out thought the Apps Store, deciding for us what apps can we use or not use, just to name some, these are things that even the cofounder Steve Woskiak has criticized, so I do not think I am crazy for pointing this out, and I am not going to be a blind follower Apple customer, because this is not a religion o a cult, is a relation based on respect and not in blind faith.......
Consider these...
First, if Apple doesn't pursue anyone trying to use their technology, they lose claims to it. (Yeah, that’s a bit loose with the legal interpretation, but it comes close.)
Second, what if this had gone unnoticed and Apple updated iTunes (or anything else) that recognized the Palm Pre as an iPod. I understand that Palm put some protections on the Pre, but consider the “what if” scenario that iTunes (or anything else Apple) sees the Pre and proceeds to whack it in the jimmy a couple times because it thinks it’s updating some critical iPod settings.
That would have led to the outcry of “Apple killed my Pre!”
Either way, Apple is the bad guy here, but it seems like they’re just making sure that devices that claim to be iPods really are iPods.
