We know some of you are excited about the Pre while others (most?) of you are diehard iPhone fans. I think we can all agree that competition is good for consumers. With that, we'd like to share the latest Pre video with you. Notice the speed at which the apps switch - likely due to that ARM Cortex A8 processor under the hood. It is almost as fast as an iPhone commercial!
While the Pre hasn't yet sold one handset and the iPhone is heading toward 20 million, we hope to see some more competition in the smartphone (and how about carrier?!) field soon.
unless this new pre uses mindcontrol I am guessing you need a keyboard to type. in the video she isn't showing anything. a little to unrealistic marketing to me.
The phone obviously has a slide out keypad. Have you guys AT ALL been looking at the keynotes or webcasts?! I can't wait for this phone, even though the phone isn't as fast as in the videos, but its pretty damn close.
Good for Palm. Not sure it will make much of a difference though. Interesting to see the background apps but I am wondering why she didn't send a meeting invite to her friend for lunch instead of an email.
Great phone sex voice over. Unfortunately, Apple has had little to challenge them. Always good to have some competition but I think this is just another phone that will enjoy limited success. Unless their GUI is nearly as good as the iPhones and the Palm App store attracts a lot of developers. The Apple App store is the main barrier to entry now.
You can do what the iPhone can do for the past two-years, and it's still vaporware the Microsoft way. Lovely...
I just want to know where she was typing? She was typing at keyboard/warp speed, and no keyboard displayed on her PALM Pre screen.
The interface seems a bit more clumsy or confusing than the iPhone, but it looks "cooler" which is what they are going for.
We'll see if it even gets off the ground with Apple's legal team nearby. Tim Cook in the last financial conf. call with investors hinted heavily that this just might be treading all over some Apple patents.
But regardless, is is such a massive improvement to switch from a BB, iPhone or Android G1? Probably not. With iPhone 3.0 OS and 30,000 apps, seamless iTunes and mature solution in iPhone overall - I ask you - why?...
Good luck Sprint with your 11 million customers - and shrinking - market share... Whenever this thing may actually ship...
Here's a newsflash, PALM shows off vaporeware that isn't shipping, so as far as you and the rest of the world are conserned, PALM can't do this.
Can you use the Pre right now? No. Didn't think so.
Can Apple do this? Is that the iPhone that is coming in June? Who knows, probably, yeah, but Apple doesn't pre-pimp the new HW.
Marketing 101: When you have no product in a marketplace yet, pimp the heck out of it. Vaporware can "sell" really well when no one can use it yet (and ignore iTunes and App store at all costs). And you also hopefully slow sales of existing competitive solutions that are actually selling.
Marketing 101 Again: Once you have a product in a particular market space, never pre-announce your new hardware or you will screw existing sales.
Apple has played this with to a tee with the original iPhone and future iPhone products.
Understand how marking works, and you'll be much better off.
Ok, but.. it was a new product for the hole industry without any comparable product on the marked. And it was not possible for the copiers to develop a comparable phone in just 5 months!
I'm concerned by how much this looked like iPhone with more app-switching tacked on. I still love my Palm Pilot, but I'm one of the few left, and I don't know any Palm die-hards the way I knew Mac die-hards back before the Second Coming. The Pre looks neat enough, and the iPhone could always use another push to help drive innovation, but I don't see this doing enough to save Palm or offer any serious (and necessary) iPhone competition.
Uhhh, didn't anyone read the text on the palm page beneath the video?

I love my iPhone but one feature that the Pre demonstrated on this video was having notices in people's contact information as to whether they are online or not. That's a neat feature that I would love to see implemented into the iPhone.
well. . . the pre may be fast, but what about iPhone revisions this June? Do we have specific stats? It may push the iPhone even past the pre. I for one will stick with my iPhone and my precious app store. GL in the market pre.
I wouldn't spend .20 on another Palm device. They didn't give a crap about the quality of last 5 generations of smartphones, what's new? They don't do hardware well at all. I'm sticking with Apple on this one.
Wow, so I get an Iphone clone with a keyboard sticking out of the bottom? That they won't even show on the video? Next they'll tell me there's a Pre-App store. Big frickin' deal.
I would much rather have my Iphone. Not interested.
It may be what the market needs. AT&Ts stranglehold on Apple and AT&Ts lousy service in the markets I travel between will continue to prevent me from ever getting an iPhone no matter how much I want one. a CDMA based Pre that can possibly jump over to the diabolical V network with a little hacking? Intriguing!
Truth be told, what they put in these videos are only an optimized simulation of reality. Hell, the web services I offer to my customers are slower on a high powered multi-core desktop machine - and I optimize for performance. And I'm on a gigabit network.
My bet is that there is a lot of caching going on here. In the least.

MS buys innovation
I see Microsoft buying Palm, and killing it slowly with it's song.
Also, a better contacts app and a new notification system in the new 3.0 hardware and iPhone will have everything this has.
It's possible that iPhone will actually beat the pre to market with these features.

You should see how fast 3G is in Apple commercials :-)
Should be taken with a grain of salt, just like all advertisement .

Totally good point.
Right now it's either AT&T with their fewer towers in rural areas, or Verizon with their substantially higher prices, lousy devices, and V-Cast crap.
There are no winners here.
Oh, by the way, CDMA is the technology that GSM 3G is based on too. I think you mean "CDMA2000". Most writers get them confused.
