Paypal denies Safari-blocking reports

Sat, 04/19/2008 - 05:01 — Andy Space

News in brief: There's been multiple reports claiming PayPal plans to block Safari users from using its service on account of the browser's lack of built-in anti-phishing features.

The Safari block has been mooted as part of a package of moves to combat phishing attacks: for example, PayPal will warn users of older browsers that they are vulnerable to such attacks, and will eventually block older browsers from accessing its service. This move generated a wave of speculation claiming the company plans to remove support for Safari, but this is not the case, PayPal explained last night.

In a response to an article on the Wall Street Journal, PayPal Corporate Communications spokesman, Michael Oldenburg said: "PayPal is developing features to block customers from logging into PayPal when using obsolete browsers on outdated or unsupported operating systems. An example of such a browser/OS combination might be, for example, Internet Explorer 4 running on Windows 98. In doing so, we better protect our customers from viewing a phishing site through their browser. We have absolutely no intention of blocking current versions of any browsers, including Apple’s Safari, from our website."

So, Safari and PayPal are safe, for the moment.

PayPal is the suck.

PayPal is the suck.

Green Bars for all

I find comfort in the green bar in IE7

how is this helping?

so by blocking browsers from accessing your site, they cannot sign up thereby not being able to be tricked by other bad sites because they can't possibly own an account on your site.

That's great marketing! So because you are too poor to upgrade or to ignorant and fall for these tricks on other web sites we just don't won't you as a customer. Brilliant!

Wankers! Its bad enough that

Wankers!

Its bad enough that eBay buy Paypal and then charge you twice (eeBay then Paypal charges) for using the service to pay for won goods, let alone the rumors they now want to stop most mac users from using Paypal ... and thus eBay!

me thinks a perfect opportunity for Mr Jobs to do with eBay what he did with iTunes ... create his own!

Paypal is terrible

Their customer service is terrible and some sites require a credit card 'for identification'. I asked them why I would even need to use their service if I had one, but no one ever got back to me.

These rumors get started and

These rumors get started and there's no stopping them. Does anyone even care about PayPal?

Why not knock Safari a little?

It's a bit odd that no one here is knocking Safari for being one of the only mainstream browsers NOT to have anti-phishing technology or supporting Extended Validation.

Why not? If you're going to push your browser out there, then it'd better be top notch. This points out to me that Safari is not.... good thing I switched to Firefox.

Dr. Logic (sic) seems to not

Dr. Logic (sic) seems to not be living up to his name.

How about people actually paying attention so they don`t get caught up in all these swindles and don`t need some Nanny Corp protecting them ?

Time to grow up and take responsibility for your own actions.

You're right (sorta)

I agree with you on one thing: People should take responsibility and not expect the corporate entity to defend their actions. However, I don't think PayPal should defend their customers. But it's nice when Mac, Windows, Linux, etc. are proactive enough to do so. (Of course, now they've come out and clarified that no "modern web browsers" will be blocked, so it all seems nice.)

My only point is that we are all beating up on PayPal while seemingly giving Safari a pass. I am just shocked that Safari fall so far behind in security standards! I just gave my father my iMac a couple of weeks ago. He's never owned ANY computer in his life and may not even be aware what "phishing" is. He is responsible for his own actions - and now that I know about Safari, I've recommended him not using it. (Nor Firefox 2.)

In Australia, the only way

In Australia, the only way to pay for goods online through eBay now is with PayPal. The big-E has applied to the competition watchdog for leave to break the law as it stands and the ACCC is likely to grant the demand if it stays true to form.
