AT&T CEO States Obvious. Tech media fall all over themselves

Fri, 11/30/2007 - 01:38 — Chauncey Dupree

AT&T's CEO stated the obvious yesterday - that there is going to be a 3G iPhone "sometime next year".  No kidding!?

Everyone has known about this for months.  Steve Jobs has even stated this on numerous occasions - he even stated this during the UK iPhone release party!  It is a known, known - as Donald Rumsfeld would say.  Still though.  It is all over the news:

AT&T CEO: Expect A 3G iPhone In 2008

We know it was a slow newsday but its hard to believe the people reporting this didn't know it wasn't really news.  It would have perhaps been news if he said the 1st quarter or even 1st half of next year would see the 3G iPhone.  Or if he gave some other specs like improved memory.

Some notes:

AT&T's CEO is an idiot for announcing anything - it will just keep more people holding off from buying the iPhone - it is basically just a reminder to wait for the 3G version.

Apple will likely release the 3G version surprisingly early as more and more people will hold off because they are waiting for the 3G version as time goes on.  We expect May-ish at this point.

Are we nuts?

Yes. But so is Stephenson. He forgot the first rule about being Apple's partner/supplier/etc. ;)

I thought the only previous offical word on a 3G iPhone was sometime in the future? I know with those lower power 3G parts coming next year was a pretty good guess. But cripy I'm not sure WTF this guy was thinking...other than 'hey, Verizon is in the news, I better get out there to wave my verbal dick and get some attention'. :)

P.S. You still haven't deleted my 'Dwight' account that I still can't log into. :P

Steve Jobs said late next

Steve Jobs said late next year when he talked about current 3G chips being too power hungry. But of course never a clear answer, something along the line of "we'll have it, but 3G is too power hungry now, we'll have to wait for the chips, perhaps late next year."

The Jobs quote I saw was

The Jobs quote I saw was hinting heavily that, though it might happen at the end of 2008, it probably wasn't going to happen till early 2009. I'm having a tough time finding it at the momment though due to the spam of reporting on this AT&T pronouncement of what Apple's delivery schedule is going to be. EDIT: Which I guess is the point of just how much of a dumb idea this was right before Christmas.

Oooo, belay that account

Oooo, belay that account order!  I just noticed the different place to login on the top right. ^_^

My job provides me with a

My job provides me with a Samsung Blackjack and it does it's job as an email devise and phone but only adequately. It does however use 3G for it's network. This chews through the battery pretty fast but you can use it's admin settings to throttle it back to GPRS or Edge as AT&T calls it. This gives me about two days of battery life or more. It'd be great if the iPhone could let the user choose which network to use. GPRS is more that fine for email and SMS and, as iPhone users know, web works slowly. If they could switch to 3G for brief periods of web browsing, then back to GPRS they could really get decent battery life.

Take a look at today's Cringely piece:

I take his stuff with a grain of salt but this sounds plausible.   I've been thinking that Apple would be a good partner for Google in the upcoming wireless auction and this just might be AT&T's response.

Always fun to speculate about what's going on in these guys heads when they make these apparently major blunders.

Don't mobile wireless

Don't mobile wireless devices require a 6 month (public) certification? Isn't that why the iPhone was announced 6 months before it first came out?

If we were going to see a 3G iPhone within the next 6 months, I'm fairly sure we'd have heard already.

Just for clarity GPRS is not

Just for clarity GPRS is not one of our networks it is the name for the data median. We have 3 versions still running today GSM( version 2.5) GSM with EDGE overlay software(Version 2.75) and of coarse 3G HSDPA ( Version 3.0).

Depending on where you live and the type of handset you own will determine the level of service you get.
