Nokia's 'iPhone-killer' launches next week

Nokia will launch its very own iPhone-killer next week, a touchscreen device until now called the 'Tube'.

The new handset will be introduced at a special event in London next week on October 2.

Nokia will also launch its Comes With Music in the UK next week, along with another new Xpress handset, to be sold at Carphone Warehouse from October 17.

Speaking at an industry event this week, Nokia's Comes With Music's go-to-market head Tom Erskine promised an aggressive turf war with Apple for the consumer markets, "We're going to put a very major marketing investment behind it indeed this Christmas," he said. "We're going to bring some investment and focus. Nokia is a big and powerful company - music is right at the top of our agenda at the moment. We'll be looking to make the market bigger in the next couple of years."

Nokia has made some major investment in the space, acquiring the rest of Symbian earlier this year and promising to license out its new touch-based OS.

I watched the vid, and I

I watched the vid, and I wasn't impressed at all... even when I could understand whatever it was that that woman was saying.

Nice try Nokia...

...but no cigar this time. This thing is lipstick on pig from what I can tell in the video. Judging by the phones that have surfaced this year to compete with iphone, it's obvious to me that Apple has achieved something that is beyond the technical reach of these other companies--for now. It'll be interesting to see just how long it takes before an iphone-class device finally appears.

oops

sorry about the double post.... chrome hung and somehow registered two saves .... i still love chrome though!

Old world ...

Based only on the video ... the navigation is old world.

The response was slow and not smooth. Nothing innovative about it. It was traditional Nokia cell phone navigation on a touch screen. The input with the stylus is also old world, despite the effort to put a positive spin on it. Net, the unit was developed by programers with traditional thinking.

Maybe the actual unit will have a surprise ... but, I doubt it. I guess if you want an answer to the iPhone on a better carrier (i.e., one without the slogan, "Fewer Bars in More Places") this might be it. Else, we wait for the next "iPhone Killer"!

iPhone Killer? They must be

iPhone Killer? They must be kidding as this demo video is totally unimpressive.

How many "iPhone killers" have we seen?

2818

So many self-proclaimed "iPhone killers" out there...and yet, the iPhone thrives. Ballmer says that the iPhone will flop, yet it is Windows Mobile that is losing market share.

Methinks that there are two types of Kool-Aid...one that puts an Apple that can do no wrong on a marble pedestal, and one that puts Apple on the brink of failure. If you blend the two together you get a drink called "reality." Apple is good in many ways (iPhone, OS X) and somewhat evil in others (iPhone SDK NDA, Apps store rejections).

what I want

The biggest mobile company in the world cant even come close to iphone!
Working at Ericsson myself i just laugh at every model.
I have an iphone and i can honestly say its years ahead of competitors.
Only thing missing are some small functionality like copy/paste, A2DP but thats just software update that i'm sure will come at one point.

This Nokia product could be a threat if the managers had bought an iphone and actually understood what the heck they are up against but nooooo thats forbidden!!!
