Hi, log into your o2 account online, and go to recent charges. If you are getting charged for tethering it will show there, as a charge.
If you have Unltd. Data bolt on, or are on the iPhone contract, they cannot charge you without warning you via SMS first. If they detect what you are doing, they give you 48hrs to stop doing so, or your data will be terminated for the rest of the month.... THAT IS o2's policy.... i work for O2 customer services in Glasgow.
I am buying the 3GS tomorrow, so dont have 3.0 yet..... Go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data
and under Tethering, change these:
APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
user: vertigo
Pass: password
Then the data will get channelled through as iPhone web usage, which cannot be detected as anything other that that....
as i said, I work for o2, and the only way they can check how data is being used is via APNs, so if your tethering APN is the same as cellular data APN (shown above) then you cannot be charged.
thats just my assumption. Worked for o2 for years in customer service and see data queries all the time.... this info is based on my experience.
watch a bbc iPlayer show, then see if you receive a txt.

There is no tether details under the cellular data bit. It just says cellular data, and that is filled out as you suggest. I've streamed some music etc just to test the connection out, nothing heavy, but I've not received a text. I don't plan on using tethering often, as I can normally get a real internet connection, but it's nice to know in emergencies I can get the internet on my laptop. When I have a minute (or 30), I'll watch an entire episode of something and let you know...thanks for your help!

On the developer betas, before the GM, the icon in the messages app was there to attach MMS content. As of the GM, the icon is no longer there nor can anything be pasted into the field. So how does tricking AT&T into turning on MMS on your line going to make that piece of software work again? I had thought that it will probably take another update when AT&T is ready to turn that feature on again. Like I said, updating the carrier file did nothing for me.

I confirmed that the internet tethering feature works with Back to My Mac (BTMM). I can finally access my Time Capsule away from home when tethered to my iPhone 3G. The browsing speed over HSPA is also fast in the Vancouver, BC area. I like that Apple implemented a PIN (personal identification number) for an encrypted connection over Bluetooth to enter in my iPhone 3G tethering setting to tether securely to my MacBook Pro. They also made the process very painless to set-up.
For Windows XP and Windows Vista users I've read that you need to have the latest version of iTunes installed and to have it open before attempting to tether with the iPhone 3G/3GS. Unknown if this works via Bluetooth but people have attested to it working over USB. Hopefully for Windows users maybe Microsoft will work with Apple to create a desktop tethering helper app to ease the tethering process on Windows XP and Vista.
For those tethering on Rogers/Fido ensure you have a data plan with at least 1 GB and aren't using data intensive applications such as P2P or FTP Client/Server. Rogers currently offers a $30.00 6 GB data add on plan that allows tethering on the iPhone 3G/3GS. It requires a 36 month term commitment with $100.00 Data Early Cancellation Fee.

BTMM and speedy HSPA tethering
I confirmed that the internet tethering feature works with Back to My Mac (BTMM). I can finally access my Time Capsule away from home when tethered to my iPhone 3G. The browsing speed over HSPA is also fast in the Vancouver, BC area.
