Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Apple could surprise everyone and not actually release a 3G version of the iPhone, but rather an add-on that allows for 3G communications (via the doc-connector) for the current iPhone. Probably not, but I just find it hard to believe that they're gonna roll out the iPhone across Europe, only to release an updated version within a few months. Also, by doing it this way - they could sell to the millions of iPhone users already out there, who would surely gladly upgrade... makes more sense, no? Maybe Steve will announce it on Thurs... yeah, just before he gets on his pig and flies home!!
If 3G was the only improvement in the new iPhone or if there was just a dongle to plug in I dont think I would get that. I mean why? I can do the same thing with my cucrrent iPhone and there is wifi all over the place who needs 3g maybe if I can tether it to my laptop but there we go with more features. But just 3G no way count me out
They can't give you 3G on your iphone with just an update (at least for free) for two reasons:
ONE: for that same reason that they had to charge people 1.99 for some stupid wireless update or 19.99 for the iTouch apps.
TWO (and the real reason): 3G is an entirely different chip. Jobs would have been out of his mind to have put that chip in the iPhone and not have utilized its power but he did not because it costs a bit more. And at my last check you cannot do hardware upgrades through the dock connector lol
Point A is wrong. They have to do that because they account for those products differently and sarbanes oakley is a weird piece of legislation. But the iPhone is accounted for in a way that allows free updates.
But Point B is right on the money, its going to obviously be a new phone, not an add-on.
While everyone jumps up and down about waiting to see the 3G iPhone, I wanna jump up and down for the iPhone to hurry up and get to Australia! There is always talk about Asia, Europe etc but everyone forgets about us!! Cmon Apple!
In saying that I could easily get one off Ebay now but I will wait anyway for the 3G version... hopefully a UMTS model.
Every day that goes by without an announcement of a 3G iPhone means it wont come sooner than 6 months from tomorrow. Since the FCC requires a public disclosure for every new phone on the market and a 6 month review period to certify it is safe to sell to the masses, my best guess is the 3G iphone wont come this year (if at all) until late Q3 at the earliest. Besides, the current iPhone is still gaining market traction in the US, and the 3G ATT network is not fully deploy.
Relax everyone. Nothing to see here. Enjoy the pinch you've got.
I understand how hard it is for you americans to look at anything from any other perspective - because we all know the world revolves around your united states... but the FCC means jack anywhere else in the world. The US is way behind in phone technology in comparison to the rest of the world, so i'm tipping Apple releases a 3G version in Europe and Asia well before they need to in the US. So its safe to say that Apple won't need to make a public disclosure to the FCC before they release the 3G iPhone to the rest of world. Will give you yanks some time to catch up.. I've got my money on WWDC for a release.
Completely agree with first poster - I do not think it is in any way guaraenteed that Apple will announce or ever release a 3g iphone. They may simply tell people (in other words) to 'suck it up' for a few more months, then roll out a mid-cycle update in the fall in prep for holiday sales. Then, an announcement in Jan 09' of a true 2nd generation iphone to debut in summer 2009 (right in time for that massive wave of contract renewals which accompanied the original iphone) using an actually farther advanced technology, e.g. WiMax with inbuilt VOIP, cosponsored by Google, etc.
3G is last generation people. I know it's not popular to say amongst some subsets of the internetdom, but 3g is old news - it's a several years old technology tied to an even older business model (cell companies trying to control everything via proprietary networks). I fail to see why anyone with half-a-brain would be begging for this in a world of wifi (currently) and wimax (soon). Apple may very well agree ...
That said, I wouldn't be 'blown away surprised' if Apple rolled out a 3g, particularly to stimulate european sales. Again, US IS NOT 3g-friendly, despite what a few carrier woulds like you to believe. Doesn't change my ultimate opinion of a WiMax / wifi with VOIP capability iphone 2.0 in 2009.
To be clear, when I say I completely agree with the first poster, I mean that I agree with the part questioning whether the 3g iphone will surface. Not about the crazy 'upgrade' 3g scheme. You can't upgrade to 3g via software, and there is no known (or even rumored to be in development) dongle that you can attach to a 2.xG phone that will suddenly make it 3g! pipe dreams! :P
Firstly - a software upgrade was never suggested, and secondly - just because no 'known or rumoured' dock-attachment is in development is not to say that it is not, or at least not possible. USB 3G modems have already been developed for laptops, so I fail to see why it would be 'unbelievable' to think Apple 'might' consider developing something similar for the iPhone (obviously in a smaller form-factor) as a dock-attachment...
What is with this collective amnesia in terms of this supposed '6 month clearing time with the FCC' = 6 months from announcement time to roll-out. I mean ... we have a counterexample in the phone's own history:
announcement: January 2007
release: June 2007
5 months.
It's not a huge difference, but don't assume that because the phone is publically announced in month x, the release HAS to be no sooner (or, on the other hand, no later) than x+6 months. Not true.
For the people who commented that a 3g phone may not happen this year or at all due to other technologies, you must remember that both steve and the at&t ceo have already stated that it will indeed come to fruition in 2008. "You'll have it next year". That would be quite a statement not to follow up on.
maybe v3 will have wimax but you need license to operate so would have both 3g and wimax. only then will telecoms undercut on price as 3g has been around for ages they can easily do so but currently have no reason to!

Data Access In order to use data such as email, Google Maps, YouTube videos and web browsing, AT&T recommends using iPhone in a 3G or EDGE Network (coverage viewer), or from a local Wi-Fi connection.
I think the idea is that any part of a network is either 3G or EDGE, meaning that EDGE frequencies are broadcast within a 3G network, but not the other way around. It's entirely possible that I might be wrong. It just seems to me like it's a marketing thing.
Well, I agree with the people who say that it will come out WAYYYYYY later than June 2008! Think about this: If they release it in June of '09, many people that had the 1.0 iPhone on its release week will buy the new iPhone because their contract will be ending very soon. So Apple will rack up tons and tons of sales from all the old iPhone users! And 3G might have been replaced by 4G (?), and the WiFi might have been replaced with WiMax, so it would make a completely upgraded iPhone! The only thing is that I don't know if people could wait that long wth an EGDE iPhone for it to be released with 4G a year later! So what I just said might just be the iPhone 3.0!!!!!!!! We'll have to see.....
