Blu Ray Drive

Blu Ray Drive

+1 for BluRay!

+1 for BluRay!

I would've liked to see a

I would've liked to see a BTO option for 1680x1050 on the 15", and a BTO option for 1440x900 on the MacBook.

I love my MacBook, but I'd like a little more screen real estate.

They should have added

They should have added everything on that list! (Except more display options, what's that about?)

Bluuu-ray! For goodness sake it's about time.

I would like to see an eSATA

I would like to see an eSATA port on the 15/17" MBP's, but wasn't expecting it.

I'd also like to see a second internal HD on the 17" MBP. I think there's room in there.

A BTO BD-DVD would be nice if there's a suitable model out there (haven't checked, might or might not be).

They should have changed the

They should have changed the design, BluRay is something we'll see in the next update.

They should have built in 3G

Don't expect BluRay or 3G

Don't expect BluRay or 3G support, ever.

  • If you want 3G, just attach via USB or Bluetooth to your 3G or 4G wireless device.  Why should Apple build in a specific, proprietary 3G modem into a world that is almost immediately moving towards 4G technologies?  Ask for another peripheral slot before asking for a piece of hardware that less than 1% of the user population will take advantage of.
  • If you want BluRay, just get an external burner.  As optical media is going away FAST, even for video.  BluRay is the final winner of the obsolete optical media wars.  Nothing more.

Don't expect Apple to follow your old-world dreams.  They're way ahead of you.

Optical Media is NOT going

Optical Media is NOT going to be obsolete until a different Archiving solution is along the way. NOT BACKUP....Archiving. The ONLY reason I want BluRay is for Data storage. I don't care so much for movies, I just want to archive 50 GB of data.

Optical is going obsolete,

Optical is going obsolete, face it. Do you see one incorporated into macbook air? No!

Honestly, it is going out just like cassette tapes and 8-tracks.

So don't think you know it all, Optical drive is not the way of the future, and the gentleman above you has his facts straight, junior.

There have been MANY

There have been MANY notebooks in the past that do NOT have Optical Disk Drives, the MacBook Air doesn't have one because they were intending to make it small. You won't see ODD media go away until there is a Media in place that can replace it. Downloading a movie currently still takes a very long time to do, even with the fastest connections. Until I have fiber running to my house to with that kind of bandwidth you can't expect ODD to go away, the infrastucture has to be available EVERYWHERE. There is still a huge percentage of people out there without a High speed internet option that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars a month. I have a fast connection at home but is still takes a couple hours to download a movie. If I want to watch something right now, it is much faster for me to run to the video store to grab it.

Hard drives ARE getting cheaper, unfortunately they are also far less reliable as a stable media than they have been for years. I remind people all the time when they tell me they just purchased a terabyte hard drive that they should have bought 2 because a Terabyte of data is a lot of data to lose at one time. And that they need that second drive to backup the first one.

Yes, I agree that ODD will go away, but not tomorrow, and certainly not in the time a new MacBook Pro WITH a BluRay drive is going to be obsolete. I can only see ODD going away AFTER hard disk technology has been replaced as well. Flash memory perhaps? Maybe, but the number of times you can re-write flash memory is still very finite, and data is even harder to recover when flash memory has gone bad.

For Archiving purposes you need a media that has a lower Failure rate than the current hard disk technology has and certainly something that doesn't require it's own Power Supply.

well the mb air is also a

well the mb air is also a gimmick.  and the ability to archive is crucial.  esp from a business perspective.  introduce 50TB backup station and then pull optical drive.  it is way too soon to drop disc.  if they drop the disc drive, i will never buy another mac.

How often do you archive

How often do you archive 50GB of Data?

I'm going to guess not that often. So why add the extra weight and expense to your laptop?

Personally, I wish they would drop the optical drives altogether across the line and have them as external options. Even better: how about put it into Time Capsule.

The only time you really need these things is when you are ripping media into your portable library or, as you pointed out, you are trying to archive or backup content/data.

BluRay Drives are no bigger

BluRay Drives are no bigger or heavier than other ODD drives, so what does that have to do with anything, remember, we are talking about the MacBook Pro NOT the MacBook Air (which has a smaller hard disk than my iPod) Point is,Apple needs a BluRay option (PERIOD) I thought for sure I'd see them in the latest Mac Pro as an OPTION, added expense means nothing if it is an OPTION. How often to I archive 50 GB of data? I do archive much more than that on a monthly basis (as all good businesses do) And if I use an external drive to do it, I now have to carry around that drive to then read that disk. Heck, it would be nice to backup ALL of my iTunes purchases on a couple BluRay disks instead of 25+ DVDs. My point is, MAKE it an option. Sony and HP already has had BluRay drives in notebooks for over a year now.

Correction, HP has been

Correction, HP has been using HD DVD but same concept, they are switching over to BluRay anyhow.

So true, so true

So true, so true indeed.

You, my friend, have the right idea!

You moron, the world is not

You moron, the world is not moving almost immediately towards 4G technologies.

Forget the trackpad, I'd

Forget the trackpad, I'd like an option for a touch screen. I also expected to see Blu-Ray and a new design. I guess I'll have to wait until WWDC in June. :(

a 10 key number pad on the

a 10 key number pad on the 17" modles like HP and Lenovo.

Use the damn number keys at

Use the damn number keys at the top of the keyboard. Honestly.

"use the damn number keys on

"use the damn number keys on the top of the keyboard"

apparently you have never had to type in more than just a zip code as a series of numbers. Start working with excel- then you would LOVE a number pad.

i think there's ample room on them 17" beauties to include a 10-key number pad. I was sorta waiting to buy a MBP till it was redesigned. I wasn't too concerned about the performance because it's still pretty good; I just don't like the overall layout of the current MBP's. I guess my MB will be my traveling companion for a while longer still..

if you edit video you are

if you edit video you are constantly using the number pad for time code entries, duration entries. I know it doesnt seem like a big deal, but when you are editing fast you dont need to look at the number pad because its all laid out perfectly, its awkward and slow comparatively to use the top numbers. The 17" MBP was introduced at nab(video &broadcast tradeshow), its the only fully hi def mac book, and it's built perfectly for mobile use of final cut and editing video, except the lack of a number pad.
Also I think at least the 17" should have 1 built in esata port, they could leave it off the 15".

Anything! - Trackpad is

Anything!

- Trackpad is smaller than MBAir but still does multi-touch (enough)
- For 3G you still need a SIM card, I prefer using a USB adapter given the case (not everyone uses 3G, and not all the time). For WiMax i think it's still early
- New design: well maybe it's true that it is an old design but it's still still looks very very pretty. And if you look for a sexier design you have the Air :)
- Keyboard: Air keyboard feels good but MBPro is not a real issue
- Screen? You have LED and plenty of options, I don't see the need for more...
- And finally Blue Ray: It would be good as an option, but it's still pricey and not much widespread, there's no real real need for it, let's wait another update ^_^.

Blu-Ray not widespread

Blu-Ray not widespread enough to put in a notebook computer? Huh? You can get Blu-Ray movies at virtually every video retailer. How is that not widespread enough? And if you meant the hardware is not widespread enough, that is the whole point of wanting it in the MBP!!! I don't have a tv at home, but I would love to be able to enjoy HD movies on my laptop (that I buy, not rent from iTunes).

No real need, eh? Have you ever watched a movie in hi-def? There's no going back. Then you need Blu-Ray.

You need BluRay on a

You need BluRay on a laptop?  Two words: battery life.

Get yourself a 50 inch HDTV if you want to watch movies.

Hey, I'm happy; Multitouch,

Hey, I'm happy; Multitouch, a speed boost, plus they reduced the price penalty for Canadians by about half.

Hopefully on the next revision they'll eliminate the penalty altogether, but for now, the savings are no longer worth smuggling for. Thanks, Apple, for keeping me honest.

ya thats cuz the whole US economy is crashing

Haha. Thanks for making my

Haha. Thanks for making my day.

Recessions are a normal, and healthy part of any economy. You can't keep the boom going forever. The best thing is to reduce the impact of the recessions, but there's no stopping it. The US has been doing well for a few years, and the economy is adjusting itself; let's just hope not too much.

Hybrid Flash / Platter disk

Hybrid Flash / Platter disk drive

I think the current design

I think the current design is still great, even after 4 years. If you were going to wish for something new, don't let it be something insignificant like the case. These cases will always be beautiful - thats a side effect of good design.

9to5mac, i love you long

9to5mac, i love you long time . . . BUT GIVE THE MACBOOK SOME LOVE TOO!!! AT LEAST THE PRO HAS ALUMINUM. THE MACBOOK STILL COMES IN TO 90S COLORS OF BLACK AND WHITE IN P L A S T I C you pro fans have little to cry over. BIG W T F, APPLE! ::SIGHS::
