What does this update mean for Apple?

Rumored 24th Apple Event is to introduce Snow Leopard. All hardware is now inline to maximize 10.6.

Apple would not be introducing new hardware and 20 days later a new OS. That would be asking for trouble.

Just curious why you think it's asking for trouble.
Apple has new machines to sell, so (marketing-wise), that's the ideal time to have new software to promote that takes advantage of it.

Apple is good at making small public product development steps in order to sell as much as possible, but selling a new computer that is outdated 20 days later is not apple style. Updating an OS in itself is troublesome and i'm sure it requires a lot of software support resources and, besides, such behaviour would not exactly make the customer happy.

Outdated...

I recollect open speculation that 10.6 would be free.... great campaign material for i.e. this summer ...

imho

Apple will report one less Mac Mini sold in Canada this year, as I reconsider/put on hold my plans for a living room computer.

Or maybe I'll buy a refurb

You are absolutely right, and the new line up is beautiful! Its our fastest line of desktops ever. Hold on though, there is one more thing...

This is actually just a test. IF you answered the first answer you are a raging Apple Fanboy and need to seek help. No human in their right mind thinks that lame excuse for an update was on par with Apple as we used to know them!

Personally,

I am quiet happy with the new mac pro update. The lower end fills the gap between imac and mac pro. You could have slim down the older mac pro but the new mac pros are so much cheaper and faster when you include extra ram and the 4 core processor.

The tree of APPLE must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of fanboys and tyrants.

REVOLUTION!

Really the only great news is the lower price point on the iMac. I think the mini is clearly targeted at switchers, hence the retention of the mini-DVI.

Apple is really boring lately. Hopefully we'll see them branch into a new exciting field or at least expand upon the touch OS at some point.

iBoring!

Oh, the new products themselves are top notch and are welcome updates to those respective product lines. BUT they are STILL FREAKING BORING!

OBVIOUSLY they are focusing innovation in places OTHER THAN their desktop line.
I can only hope to heck that the new iphones are running a mobileOS that is truly a multitasker and have whatever secret hardware that PA Semi has been cooking up. And that webtablet or whatever secret they are working on had better come out this year and it had better be HOT!

That hardware is way too overpriced - as always with Apple. For 600$, you can get a top-notch hackintosh that will perform very well and way better than the mini.

What are Apply playing at, the price hike for the iMac and Mac Mini to way over the top. I was going to upgrade to an iMac but at that price I'm now re thinking the upgrade.

What are you talking about? In case you haven't noticed, it's now cheaper to get a 24" iMac. Or, if you want to think about it another way, there is no "price hike." All the prices are the same.

And by the way, I think you meant to say "What IS Apple playing at?" ;)

Hellooo?? We are in an economic downturn, even if Apple has tons of cash stashed away somewhere, that doesn't mean that their customers have. So radical updates at this stage will be pricey for Apple to develop and may not sell particularly well, especially as these are some of their most expensive products expensive desktops (iPod update before christmas was fair enough as they are more affordable). No matter how much we might want it, they aren't going to introduce new high end hardware for a while. Let's look forward to iPhone 3.0 and Snow Leopard.

You make the best point and I think you are very much on target! And look forward we all will!

Something to keep in mind about focusing innovation elsewhere is that the iMac was the first of Apple's entire lineup to make the switch to the current design scheme. They just put a little too much confidence into the iMac rather than the Mini and the Pro. If only they would update those... *sigh*

Apple will announce that Disney has bought them.
You heard it here first.

Here's a question regarding the updates to the MacBook Pro.
I'm looking at the new options, and I see that now they've made available a solid state drive instead of a rotational drive.

Does anyone know:

1) how much lighter this makes the machine?
2) How much longer the machine will last on battery power?

Aside from not being able to currently afford one responsibly, I really want the new iMac.

Would have loved to see Nehalem and the ATI 4870 as an option, instead of 4850, as well.

Perhaps later and then it'll have Blu-Ray support? *crosses fingers*

Sometimes a computer is just a computer

Personally I think this update to the iMac range is just a cursory dusting of the line-up. I really can't get excited about a bigger hard drive, a bit more ram, the same processor as before and a mid range gfx card - very unspectacular. For the premium price Apple are charging we should have higher expectations and not just accept whatever they throw at us. My suspicion is that this update is a "holding pattern" prior to something a bit more spectacular towards year end as I can't imagine we'll be waiting another full 10-11 months for an update based on the current tech spech. Mobile Nehalem chips, LED display, better GFX card would be nice for starters, and dare I mention a Blu ray Drive option now that the licensing is hopefully going to be relaxed this year.

well well,

It's just like this:
first You propose new Hardware
and a month later (or more ..) You propose a new OS version

This way You can be quite sure that Your customers are
"automatically" spending 180$ more (price of Snow Leopard)

Wouldn't have You preferred to buy the new machines with
Snow Leopard availbe/installed ?

I think that this update was more of a quality improvement than a quantity improvement. For example, it is great that they lowered the price on the Mac Pro and divided it into two models. People, including myself, have been complaining that they need only half of the previous Mac Pro spec-wise. Another plus is the cheaper graphics cards. I can remember when the Quadro FX graphics card cost over two grand as an option for the Mac Pro. It's also great that they update the graphics in the Mac Mini to equal that of a new Macbook.

Overall, I am not disappointed in the new desktop line. If you want to gripe about a small piece of the update, go ahead. I personally think the positive portion of this update is still greater than the sum of its parts. The computers are still more expensive than PCs, but the quality is still unmatched.

OK,
Please explain what is a graphic card like a
rebranded "NVidia 9600" doing in a PowerMac !!??
This graphic card is ok in a MacBookPro, could
evenctually be OK in an iMac ... but .. in a
Power Mac ??

Actually Mac Mini and iMac and Mac Pro they didn change the design bcoz
They ar already in Aluminium form
Why they change the design of macbook
Bcoz macbook is white plastic as same as last time white iMac.
so all in aluminum design still wan to change wat??

oso mac mini with black top is ugly
so apple retain it white

mayb the 24th March Apple Event is Snow Leopard Realese?
