What I'd rather have would be an optional, customizable row with characters I frequently use.

I think that the customizable row would be good, but Apple is not renowned for something that, shall we say, free. I think that it would be better to have it as something able to be turned on and off in general preferences.
have a much larger delete/backspace key. The Delete/Backspace key is so small that it's very easy "to miss the target."
The number row would be useful, but it could be roomier if they didn't use up 2 lines at the top for the text window and the cancel button!!
How about having a double tap of the current "123" numbers key (like caps-lock) bring up the 5th row for that session of using the keyboard. It would be an easy switch for those times when a lot of numbers need to be typed. Also might be nice to have a "-" then pop up somewhere because I use that a lot of separating digits.
