$99 iPhone rears its ugly, nonsensical head again

First, our take then we'll let you read the story.

Ain't gonna happen. Tim Cook specifically said in the last earnings call when asked about the $99 iPhone: "We don't make the cheapest phones, we make the best phones."  That being said, there were a few times already where AT&T was selling $99 iPhones (refurbished).  Plus there are going to be a boatload of cheap iPhone 3Gs on the market when the next version is released (ours being some of them).  That isn't the point.  Whether the iPhone is $99 or $199, isn't really significant to consumers' pocketbooks (mindset is another matter).  AT&T will bill you the $100 difference in little over a month into your 2 year contract.

With that in mind, SAI quotes RBC analyst Mark Abramsky who states:

Apple will start selling a cheaper, 'entry-level' iPhone sometime this summer, for around $99 after subsidy, according to "checks," RBC analyst Mark Abramsky said in a note this morning.

  • The main cost reductions would come from fewer features -- not a crappy 'iPhone nano' or something without a multi-touch screen. Abramsky thinks it might have a lower-resolution camera, no 3G Internet access or GPS, and a cheaper data plan (~$15/month) with a usage cap. We agree that lowering the monthly bill would help drive iPhone sales, but carriers won't be thrilled.

  • Meanwhile, the iPhone 3G will get feature upgrades, such as a better camera, video capabilities. (See chart below.)

  • He thinks Apple could sell 20-30 million of these cheaper iPhones in fiscal 2010, boosting Apple's smartphone market share to almost 20%.

  • Cheaper iPhone will eat into iPhone 3G and iPod sales. And a lower subsidy and lower margins means Apple will have to sell three times as many to make the same gross profit from one iPhone 3G. He expects fiscal 2010 iPhone gross margins to shrink to 35%-37% from 50%+.

Yeah, no.

seriously anyone could make more accurate predicitons than this guy. The whole chart is so not apple. I think the 3G wasnt a new model, it was an upgrade.
Im certain we are in for Iphone 2.0 (with 3.o software =D )
to say "more than 2mp camera, less than .48" thick and 32gb memory" is not really useful...

Yeah, this guy really sounds like a dumbass. He is pretty much describing an iPod Touch with phone capabilities. Maybe he just has his products confused. Remember this is the same guy who lowered his AAPL stock prediction down to $70/Share

He's right though, surely we're gonna see a split:
-
iPhone EDGE - stripped down (same features as the first iPhone)
-
iPhone AV - with video iChat (plus existing 3G, GPS etc)
-
the Edge phone serves China/India as well as offering an entry level phone thats is still fully compatible with the App Store.

I'm baffled why there is so much discussion about cheaper iPhones. I heart my iPhone as much as the next guy, but what kills me is how damn expensive AT&T's plan is. (and the AT&T monopoly thing bugs me)

The amount you pay AT&T in 2-3 months (!!!) is the cost of an iPhone so the price of the iPhone is negligible.

Are all carriers as expensive as AT&T??

I want a $40-$50 a month plan that my iPhone works on with all the bells & whistles.

Apple is not in the habit of cannibalizing its high end products with a cheaper and lower margin product. This guy is talking rubbish.

Most of the world waited for the iPhone until it was 3G. Why would they buy a phone that wasn't 3G?

Apple customers believe in the concept of getting what you pay for or they wouldn't be Apple customers. The iPhone will continue to be priced at a level where the price tag says "I'm a good phone". It's the same thing with Snow Leopard. Some high profile bloggers are asking that it be free, but when something is free people naturally believe it doesn't provide anything of value.

I can't see Apple ever changing their pricing model.

Ridiculous from start to finish - but the most ridiculous element is the idea that Apple would ship a model with the same size screen at a lower resolution. Two UIs, two App Stores (App Store Proper and App Store Pauper anyone?).

Dear oh dear. And people pay money to read what these people think? Sheesh.

Infineon lost the design to Broadcom for a phone this summer

My prediction which is slightly more realistic is that the next iPhone 3G will offer a 5 MP camera with L.E.D. Flash, video call camera, HSPA+ for support up to 42 Mbps, two versions with a 32 and 64 GB flash storage, 802.11 b/g/n, A2DP with bluetooth file transfer, extended battery life, ability to add multiple attachments to Mail, copy/paste, video recording, voice command, voice dial, Turn by Turn GPS Voice Navigation and tethering.

Your "prediction" is actually a wishlist - surely you forgot laser pointer, rape alarm and grenade launcher. xx

Here at County you wouldn't BELIEVE how many of us would like the Rape Alarm feature.

Sent from my iPhone.

Actually the technology is already in place for Apple to provide this in the next iPhone launch. This includes the ability to provide 64 GB flash storage. Here in Canada the GSM wireless carrier Rogers already sells video calling HSPA cellphones some of which also allow video recording, voice dialing and GPS navigation. Our HPSA download speed already tops out at 7.2 Mbps and is estimated to be able to download at 14 Mbps by the end of this year. There are several competitor smartphones that offer similar features (ie: Sony Ericsson Xperia, Nokia N97, HTC Touch Diamond, etc).

You guys who think they can't have a 'basic' model and an 'advanced' model are missing something - the Macbook and Macbook Pro. An iPhone can still be a luxury phone, with multi-touch, the app store etc, but without 3G and GPS, and without the next upgrade to video chat etc. Not all of us need, or want to pay for, 3G data speeds and GPS. I do agree that the screen size and res will be the same on both models, and the processors won't be too different in speed.

I actually have the new low-end iPhone. It supports 3G, Edge, and GPS, bluetooth, and more. It'll be available for $99, and will be called the "iPhone 3G".

The next iPhone model will have more memory, nicer dimensions, better networking, and better optics.

All Apple products will be able to run the same software - as Apple doesn't want to have numerous software platforms (iPod, Mac, iPhone)... but instead converge them into one platform.

heh, $99 is because of us crisis?
