Apple's doing it themselves. Put an example out there, test the waters for how cheap Mac sales would do, then shoot it out of the water to prove a point to the other would be ne'er-do-wells. Well played, Apple.
I don't understand why people would think Microsoft is behind Psystar. Microsoft likes being the only legitimate option for PCs (I don't really count Linux as an option for most consumers). Why would Microsoft want Dell or HP to sell PCs with OS X installed? That means less licenses of Windows sold for them.
I would think Microsoft would want Apple to stay with with its proprietary system. It means more Windows licenses for them. Is there a reason why Microsoft would want Psystar to win that I am missing?
If it's anybody, it has to be a PC vendor who's sick of dealing with Microsoft. HP and Dell are the two main culprits. HP has been researching OS options over at least the last year, and Dell is struggling.
The real culprits are the Free Software Foundation. Richard Stallman can't stand the idea of anyone making a living from Unix, that's the thing that originally drove him insane back at the MIT AI Lab.
I also don't understand why Microsoft would want OSX available for PCs. That doesn't make sense... I would think Dell might be, but there's a part of me that says that doesn't make any sense, and that maybe Psystar is just stupid enough to think they can go up against Apple.
I chose comments because I can't honestly say I think anyones providing them with money. It would seem like such a risky investment to invest in a company such as Pystar. No, I think they're legitimately making their own way.
Looks like someone can't come up with a viable product of their own so they opt to copy someone else's. Reminds me of a media company who wrapped their own DRM around Apple and Microsoft's DRM to lease music files....

Well Alienware was purchased by DELL and if you compare addresses by both locations of Alienware and Psystar, the following could be construed:
1-Psystar was an ex-Alienware developer prior to Dell aquisition
2-Psystar gets cases and discounts between Tiger Direct (also around the block) who may be working on their own sales solutions
3- Psystar web design is similar to Alienware hence connection with same marketing team that launched Alienware for DELL.
4- Coincidence between stars and aliens - space is relevant in both
5- Why not?
6- M.S. is dumping money in multiple acquisitions that its failing to close on (psystar moniker is a bit far fetched but not entirely out of the question)
7- If MS supplied funds for Psystar and MS realized it should refocus its energies internally and left Psystar to hang then there's a window of a previous experimental investor.
8- Psystar and opensource. Seems that it could even be the opensource community testing the waters on OSX since supposedly osX is based on some opensource architectures that Apple has re-engineered as their own.
All speculation. I'm interested to see if O.S. devs that build x86 projects will get a hit since Psystar mentions some by name, yet, they did not make a penny. (Supposedly)
You're product, Macintosh, has doubled they're market presence in a short amount of time. Apple's increasing they're sales while the PC industry is contracting.
Apple's products carry a price premium.
So... PC companies, who?, would want to chop into Apple's sales by offering similar products at a big discount. A lot of people are looking at Apple products, so by offering, an Apple clone, they'll be able to drag Apple sales down.
Now who in the PC industry would be willing to spend a lot of money to be vindictive? Not to offer a long term product, but just to yank Apple, nee Steve Jobs around?
Hum. There's only one name that comes to mind. Also named Steve.

Fake Steve Jobs!
Conspiracy
What is Steve smoking? Apple's being a little paranoid don't you think? Apple must have some pretty good info to be spouting these claims.
Microsoft as culprit?
