iPhone 9to5Mac

Introduced in 2007 by Steve Jobs, iPhone is Apple’s flagship iOS device and easily its most popular product around the world. Software wise, it runs iOS and includes a large collection of mobile apps through the App Store.

Since its introduction, Apple has released at least one new phone every single year. In recent years, that has typically been in the fall. iPhones are sold through multiple retail channels including Apple Stores, cellular stores, Best Buy, and other major electronic retailers. iPhones can be bought with a single up front payment, financed through the iPhone Upgrade Program, or financed through a cellular carrier.

Apple’s smartphone has become much more than just a phone since its debut. The iPhone can act as your primary camera, music player, GPS device, email client, mobile banking system, messaging device, movie player, and much more.

Next month, Apple will be unveiling its first foldable iPhone – rumored to be called iPhone Ultra. It’s going to feature a 5.5-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display. Late last month, Samsung introduced the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 – and it comes with those same screen sizes.

Whether or not you believe Samsung only made this phone to preempt the iPhone Ultra is a different story – but one way or another, seeing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 gives us a great early idea of what iPhone Ultra will feel like in the real world.

Next year, the iPhone will be turning 20 – and Apple is heavily rumored to be working on a radical new design to celebrate. Many have expected this to come in the form of iPhone 19 Pro (more likely to be called iPhone 20 to align with the anniversary), but I think there’s one solid reason that it may not be delivered in that form.

iOS 27 breaks 15 years of muscle memory on iPhone and iPad

Since iOS 5 in 2011, the iPhone and iPad have included Notification Center, a central place to find alerts from various apps in chronological order.

Starting with iOS 27, Apple is making a major change to how users open Notification Center on iPhone and iPad.

iOS 27 is currently in beta, and the behavior has changed slightly between the first two releases. However, the four developer beta and second public beta show this change will ship this fall.

Here’s where you can use your iPhone as your driver’s license or ID

Apple announced plans to let iPhone users add a driver’s license or state ID to Wallet back in 2021. The rollout started slowly, but it has picked up significantly over the past year. Apple also now offers a second option that does not depend on your state at all.

Today, there are two distinct ways to carry an ID in Apple Wallet:

  • An eligible driver’s license or state ID issued by a participating state
  • A passport-verified Digital ID created from an unexpired U.S. passport

The two options coexist in Wallet, but they have different requirements and are not accepted everywhere. Here’s what each one does, where you can use it, and which states could be next.
