Developers being asked to ready apps for full screen/ 7-inch [Update:Munster, BGR]

According to Silicon Alley Insider, Apple has asked a few select developers to ready a full screen mode of their apps for a demo next month. Obviously, with all of the tablet chatter and specifically the Financial Times' report yesterday (and iLounge's earlier report) of a January announcement, it would seem to indicate this would be for a tablet announcement, though an AppleTV update could also be a recipient of a full screen app update.

Meanwhile, everyone's favorite Piper Analyst Gene Munster is giving 75% odds on a January announcement and 50% odds on a Tablet.  He also lays out the following:

  • If the tablet were announced in January, he would expect it to ship some time in Apple's second fiscal quarter. "Based on a conversation this week with a Taiwanese component supplier," he writes, "we expect Apple to ship a tablet device by the end March."
  • Munster had previously estimated a monthly run rate of 162,000 units once the table ships (about 2 million annually). "Assuming the tablet comes out in [March]," he writes, "we believe Apple would sell around 1.4 [million] units at a $600 ASP in [calendar year 2010], an increase of about 2% to revenue."
  • Other reasons for a January event: to launch a new iPod touch with a video camera, or a new Apple TV that could support a subscription TV service

Quoth the Munster:

"We expect the tablet hardware to be similar to an iPod touch but larger (about 10"); we expect the key differentiator of the device to be its software. While there are several options ranging from a touch screen Mac OS X to an iPhone-like OS, we expect the tablet to be driven by a new version of Apple's iPhone OS that runs a new category of larger apps alongside all the current apps from the App Store. We believe Apple's tablet would compete well in the netbook category even though it would not be a netbook. Rather it would focus more on apps, entertainment content (from the iTunes Store), and web surfing."

And to round it all up, the BGR is saying that the January announcement of the tablet will definitely be a 7-incher, not just the 10-incher we've heard so so much about.

The week of Jan 11 - 15, after CES_ lol,

Thanks Steve for silent invite_

Wonder if it will have the ability to forego full screen and run multiple apps side by side at their current iPhone resolution?

That is slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket - and use as a phone with a headset. This would be a killer product as the iPhone / Touch screen us too bright and too small for long term reading of content, while a 10" screen is too large for pocketability. Me thinks, as some rumors have guessed, multi sized devices, perhaps starting with something small and eventually Apple display products (MacBooks, iMacs, Monitors) going touch.

It's the future!

How big are your pockets? A 7" screen is 2x the diagonal size of an iPhone! There's no way that would fit in a pocket.

AKA the Nokia E9XXX series that were wide. You will be surprised. Even if not, something the size of a paperback book that can be put under the arm and act as a mini laptop, tablet and phone will be nice. If the screen res is high enough, with an optional BlueTooth keyboard and/or stylus, it will be great for spreadsheets too. I really would like to be able to run my life without a laptop or bag, just a book sized device that docked at my desk to a larger display. Me thinks Apple are going to do this. IBM tried once with the Brick, but it was ahead of it's time.

I'm already intimidated by the app-store. A fragmented app-store with different platforms would be too much for me.

I'm good with the March time-frame. With a summer iPhone update, they don't want to spring both on customers at the same time. (I'm predicting that iPhone #4 will simply be the "iPhone"--not 3GS squared or 4G or iPhone pro)

Resolution independence for the win.

Who will provide the wireless service?

I think the release date will be to coincide with the new iPhone.

Apple already has great mobile devices and all they lack is screen size. The slate will be a bigger screen for the iPhone and Touch. This makes life a lot simpler. It will utilize existing contracts and hardware. It may have additional memory and battery. I think Apple will want to market this at sub $300.

A little smaller then a DVD box and im buying one.
