Owing to the poor performance of recent late-2009 iMac models I will defer purchase until these Core i5 and Core i7 models (i) are shown not to have the poor performance of recent models, (ii) the performance is quantifiably justified by the increase cost of purchase, (iii) Apple finally offers a version of Snow Leopard that is stable, snappy, and error-free, and (iv) no widespread and/or egregious  design or manufacturing defects are noted. I suspect that I will need 6-months of favorable post-marketing surveillance and, independent and objective reviews to be fully satisfied with the promised gains in iMac reliability and performance.

Patience is better than buyer's remorse. Unless, of course, one is willing to be a volunteer lab rat for Apple's quality control department.

I'll ALAWAYS Volunteer for a Brand New iMac

Whre do I sign up?

Wait and see.

You can volunteer anywhere you can drop a couple grand for an iMac. Apple's volunteers must pay for the privilege of testing new products. No IRB required for their rodents.

I'm not sure what that other

I'm not sure what that other guy heard, but I've been running Snow Leopard on my 2009 iMac.  Performance and reliability has been exceptional.   No issues.  I never even heard rumors about any issues with "late model iMacs".

Since the author of the prior post didn't actually mention any issues with the iMac, he or she should be ignored unless he/she can validate his view with references to some well-regarded authors writing about these alleged issues.

Huh?

I suppose that your singular experience is all sufficient for the gullible and self-deluded. I fail to understand how your individual thoughts, consisting of unsubstantiated opinion and unsupported by independent expert analyses, is also not worthy of scorn. You seem to hold other people to a standard of evidence you do not hold for yourself.

Put this in your pipe and smoke it:

Snow Leopard still in development.

No  great performance gains, albeit better pricing.

A simple search, a little effort, an inquisitive mind are all that are required. You can thank me anytime, fanboi.

I think the first guy is being a little over the top with six months of wait time, but it is probably a pretty good idea to wait on the quad core purchase.  1.  This is a new platform for Apple with a totally new chip set (for Apple).  2.  There have been a number of issues with the new dual core (Fall 2009) iMacs in particular video playback. Check the Apple forum and there are plenty of threads discussing the problem(s).  Most are not terrible, but are concerning.   It is unclear if that is a Snow Leopard issue, SL and iMac or just new iMac issue. I have been reading the iMac forums so i am not sure if the laptops, older iMacs or Mac Pro are seeing the same issues.

I tested the problem at the Apple store last weekend and video playback from a number of websites was very choppy.  YouTube was a major problem.  Flash based websites do not run propertyly.  Cpu use went crazy when playing back a simple video or Flash.

I  have been waiting for the quad core iMac to come out for a very long time.  This will be my first mac and I am looking forward to the switch, but will wait a little longer to make sure that all the kinks are worked out.  Will not wait six months (or for a personal invite from Mr. Jobs), but a month or so should be sufficient for Apple to get all the kinks out.
